  • I finally changed the transmission fluid on my 2015 BMW M4 with DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). It wasn't "hard", per say, but it required a lot of research and finding the right parts. I teamed up with ECT Tuning and they created a kit specifically for me at my request so I could get you EXACTLY what you need to do it yourself.
    I highly recommend replacing the pan when you do this job, but I provided a link to the kit below without the pan as well. If you buy this kit and re-use the old pan, you will need to buy 2 additional liters of fluid since that kit only comes with 5.

    Thanks again for your awesome channel. Something to add.
    So after servicing the DTC and changing the oil cooler lines I started experiencing hesitation at peak torque. I though it was engine related. Nope. Turned out to be the tranny. When replacing oil cooler lines you need to complete the other items in the Insta menu for DCT. Flushing, setting slipping points ETC.
    Once done the hezzitation was GONE.

    re watching as I am finally doing my swap. This is a really great video. Couple of items for anyone watching:
    Reason for the short refill is all of the filters are empty and maybe, probably, some passages, oil cooler lines. The software was made for mechanics and not us. You run for a bit check the oil and fill just like we have done for years prior to all the high tech stuff. Brake pedal down works clutch so again you are purging the system. My guess on the temp is that the oil expands a bit with heat and you don't want a short fill. The only interesting portion of the ista part was when it engaged the gears and I wonder if that is not triggered by pressure and internal sensors to determine oil level.
    Also if you have a 1 series the ECS kit says it is not for your car but if you look up every part in the kit and cross reference it against realoem the parts are supposed to work so more funny business from ECS.
    Again, thank you for an awesome video!

      @@HelpMeDIY Finally did this today. More pointers for anyone doing this. At 15:49 you can use a needle nosed pliers to grab the hub and wiggle it right out if you do not have the correct size blades to get in there.
      I would also suggest after you get the old filter out, take a moment to see how the filter is held by the cap. Those three forks go around the filter not pushing down. All of the pressure to get the cap back in appears to be the new o ring so make sure you lube the ring as well as the mating surface.
      I had an issue getting the cap back on and it must of been hung up on one of the three forks. Had to watch this multiple times before it finally sank in. If you press the filter in then the tipping process has to be done just right as pointed out. I tried the filter in the cap and unless you get it perfect it hangs up on the interior barb.
      At 21:54 where he puts the filter in. Push the bottom of the filter up resulting in the side almost touching the top of the housing inside. This allows you to take the cap, with two of the forks in the 4 and 8 positions and the third at 12. When you add the cap to this fun you can press the cap on bottom first and the two forks will be slightly overlapped with the filter. As you start to push the cap on further you will straight to balance out the force getting the cap to go on straight. I struggled with this for an hour before I got everything to line up. Best of luck, you can do this. Great video

    More feedback. Number 4 on the part list is basically and anti drainback valve. It does not seal perfectly as I found out when I replaced mine. If you are doing this service and you want to check the valve you should be careful when removing the pump. It is a 6mm hex but you cant get straight up at it as the plastic pickup that you remove to change the filter makes it a bit tougher. It can be done but you want to be careful not to break any of the edges of the pick up off. If you are replacing that then no worries.
    When you look at the valve you should see what looks like a ball. It is not round but the bottom half is. The top half has a few ridges and a nipple. The nipple is the spring perch. If you can see any of this, the spring has come off. You can rotate the ball back to its normal position and push it up into the pump/valve. You can feel and hear a slight click which is the spring seating back on the nipple. I purchased a new pump since I was in there and upon looking at the old and new pumps side by side, playing with them for about an hour (OCD) determined that there is no need for replacement if you see the ball out of the proper rotation. $95 part.
    If anyone reading or doing this needs help feel free to reach out and I will help with what I have found. Bottom line is it is not hard and if you are doing this you might as well check to make sure it is in the correct position.

    Man, I’ve been patiently waiting for you to tackle this one. You did a great job on it! I thought there was going to be a lot more voodoo involved in this one but it’s pretty much the same as the ZF8HP in a lot of other BMW’s it seems? It got a little confusing when doing the test plan but it kinda looked like it isn’t really all that essential to use ISTA? All it really did was monitor the fluid temp and switch thru the gears if I’m not mistaken? I have ISTA but I’d almost rather just use another scan tool I have to monitor the temp and run it thru the gears myself and just skip all the clicking thru a bunch of pages on a laptop while I’ve got transmission fluid running down my arms and face. Lol Would you disagree with that assessment? Or do you think it’s better to use the laptop? Also, I’d just like to say Thank You so much for taking the time to do this. I think you just helped out a whole lot of M owners that are really gonna benefit from this in the years to come. I’m curious, how many miles were on that fluid?

    • @HelpMeDIY
      @HelpMeDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Derek Hanson thank you! Yes I would recommend using ISTA. When I (finally) got to the right step it definitely did something (other than monitoring) that allowed me to get additional fluid in. It would be low if not for ISTA. Now would that hurt the car? I can’t say for sure either way, but the peace of mind is nice 😎

    Question so the link for the kit comes with the pan for over 500 but Ecs also has another kit without the pan for 300.....do I need to change the pan ?

    • @HelpMeDIY
      @HelpMeDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      +will pak I highly recommend replacing the pan for 2 reasons. First, they are prone to warp and crack since they are plastic which will of course cause them to leak. Second, the gasket is integrated into the pan so if you remove it to replace the inner filter, you would have to also reuse the gasket.

    I have 23k miles on my 2017 M4. Since I got it used with 7.5 k miles, when cold, the transmission feels like it slips when I backup or go forward for the first time. Afterwards, even If I only drive a 1/2 mile, it then drives normal. Is this the way it should be - because the engine is cold the transmission is programmed to let the engine rev higher? Or is this an indication that the transmission fluid needs changing?

      @@HelpMeDIYof course not, the engine drain plug is on the lowest position so the earth gravity helps to get away almost all the amount of the old oil:-) Usually I drain 6,3 litres and fill 6,5, the mixture of new and old is acceptable. The situation with the DCT is different. The drain plug is in the same heigt as the cooler so the oil from the cooler doesnt flow out automaticaly. If you only chnge the oil in DCT then 6,5 litres is enough, but this is just a part solution. If you want an overal solution then you have to get away the oil from the cooler as well, which means to dissasebly the cooler and pour out the oil or flush the circuit, then you can fill all the 8,5 l 🙂

      @@HelpMeDIY that's also true. The oil will definitely be quicker out of the sump and thereby give a heavier jet of oil. But the sloshing is due to the underpressure in the system forcing the air to pass the oil jet.
      When I empty an oil can I poke a hole opposite the cap so that air can get into the can while pouring. After this, the jug can no longer be used for leak-tight storage.
      By the way, you make nice videos, I also have an F80 myself and was planning to change the oil even though BMW says not to.
