Thanks for the turorial. Ngl it feels like it's gonna break when pulling the first 2 bits, also knowing that sneaky snake screw is behind the sticker is big help.
To those who's trying to find out the screw size, it's T9H. Note the H, because there is a hole in the middle of the torx. The screw has a protruding spike in the middle. That's why normal T9 would not work.
I found this helpful along with the controller test mode in The Xbox. I diagnosed my in-player wading through mud movement to a permanent activation of the left joystick. The clue was in the test page you should have to press a button to see it identified and which way it’s manipulated. Every time I pressed any other button it always defaulted to the left joystick instead of being blank before and after each press. A quick squirt of WD40, drain, mop up and dry it before re-assembly did the trick! Thanks for the access hints above. If you can’t get the edge tools used above try a square, biro-type pen cover and trim a couple of tenths of a mm to get it small enough to sustain a prized open side panel. Don’t use the conventional rounded-wedge biro cover as it’s too thin and will snap.

Thanks for this. I had spilled a sticky drink on mine making the A and B buttons sticky where the controller was useless. I almost just bought a new one but decided to see if it was simple to take apart to clean. Thanks to your video and 10 minutes of work my controller works like new again. THANK YOU!!!
I'm such an idiot. I half assed took this controller apart to try to configure the buttons like a switch controller what I should have known is the buttons only go in that particular slot from other controller tear Downs I've done now I got this jumbled mess in front of me and I'm happy that you are showing us how to do it cuz you're one of the best repairman on TH-cam.
When trying to reassemble my controller for the first time after doing a custom paint job, I thought I could do it myself without a tutorial. Afterwards I realized it was really squeaky, the screws wouldnt go all the way in, and the trigger made a clicking noise. I finally gave in and watched a tutorial and realized that I had placed the backplate on top of the battery contacts instead of letting the contacts go around the backplate, causing them to bend and make the backplate and front plate not come together as they were supposed to, proving that a little help is needed for everything
Quick and simple, I've had problems with the joy stick drifting all the time and saw a few videos stating Wats the problem is/was, you showed me how to open casing without breaking it. Straight into it without the ridiculous 3-4 minute intro, thumbs up from me.
Same, except my joystick for some reason doesn’t deft until the other joystick is pushed forward Don’t know why it does that and frankly it is quite annoying
I got a chrome case for Christmas and had no idea how to put it on. I was scared because it looked like I would have to completely take apart my controller, but from this video I have learned that I don’t need the bit that came with it which looks to be what all the components are normally held in, I just need the top and bottom case and I can just screw those on to the controller.
Very grateful for you and your channel. Always was a tinkwrer, and really enjoy repairing and learning about these expensive electronics. Again truly grateful, you do a fantastic job explaining. Thumbs up all the way. 👍👍👍
I want to thank you a lot, I broke my xbox controller and didnt know how to open it to try and fix it. This video helped me take my controller apart and fix it. thank you so much.
Thanks. One suggestion, if I may. The screw in the plastic when you want to screw it back in needs to be turn a bit in the opposite side to find a moment then the screw perfectly align the spiral row of the thread in the plastic - otherwise the screw will start creating a new row in the plastic, so after a few dis assemblies there will be no thread at all in the plastic.
I had some friends over and I heppened to break my brothers controller. I panicked but i fix the controller thanks to you and my brother is not going to kick my ass so I just want to thank you!
[Since you watched this video, you'll be interested in some info I have on "testing" your controller, so read to the end!] I just bought (and received) a used controller just like the one in this video, and it was damaged. The damage was not disclosed (and honestly, they probably didn't realize it... because it could hardly be seen). Anyway, even though I could have sent it back and requested another one... there would be that wait time for return and resend, and I decided I would just fix it! I have never opened an Xbox One controller before, and searched for this exact info on TH-cam. These controllers are built so much better than the Xbox 360 controllers, and the covers that snap-off (which was what I didn't know about) are a MUCH BETTER way to build these, as they cover the screws, compared to 360 controllers. Once I saw that the covers pop off... that was all I needed to know (I already knew about the hidden screw under the sticker - which I removed intact, after softening the sticker adhesive with a hair dryer)! This controller was either thrown by someone, or it was dropped onto the floor from high enough up... that the large rumble motor broke the frame that holds it in place, and was jammed as far down into the grip as it would go... thus preventing the rumble motor from spinning. I repaired the controller, and it works perfectly. If you haven't already gotten this... download the "FREE" app on Xbox One (there's ads, but you can "pay" to get rid of those if you want... I wouldn't bother). Anyway, this app will test ALL aspects of your controller - including the impulse motors in the triggers, and the larger ones in the grips (which is what I needed to test). You have to enable the motor testing under options, and I would recommend NOT enabling the trigger and the grip motors at the same time - at least until you verify that they work (so you don't get false-positives, as the triggers enable the motors for both sets, if selected). Oh... the app is called, "Game Controller Tester". There's another one, but it's crap! If my tips about removing the sticker helps (or is of interest to you in not destroying it), and my info about the app is helpful... please give a thumbs-up. Not because I need a pat on the back (I honestly don't care), but only to let me know if I have been of help. I like helping, and I do it as much as I can, when on Xbox Live. I've been told I should be an Xbox ambassador, but I'm not sure if I have THAT much time to commit to it. Happy gaming, and good luck in repairing your controllers!!! :-)
Is there any difference in the thumbstick modules from previous Xbox one controller? They said they improved thumbsticks for wear. Wondering if that was just the plastic thumbstick or if they finally improved that little plastic piece on the module.
Thanks buddy took mine apart this morning to clean it as 2 buttons were sticking put it back together but wouldn’t turn on, came across your video and it was the battery connector didn’t put them threw, now it’s working again thanks to your video, so awesome job buddy👍👍👍
a small tip to anyone doing this. take the controller in your NON dominant hand. hold it so the joysticks are in to your stomach, or lap, take your non dominant hand, and put the thumb of that hand on top of the trigger button, and use a pry tool with your dominant hand. as you begin to pry with the tool, push your thumb from your non dominant hand down on the trigger button & depress it, and slide the thumb down to where its slightly under the back panels. it makes popping the rear panels off SO much easier
you can look it up,there's a guy who dismantle the entire thing. And from what i saw the bumpers are now like the old Xbox 360.In case you don't know the 360 controllers have the bumpers made out of one piece of plastic that was pushing directly in the switch, unlike the old box one controller that used that awful leaver like actuation mechanic. Also i noticed that they are way quieter than the old ones.
On the Xbox One S controller I have, there is a hidden message in the battery compartment that says “Hello from Seattle”. I was never expecting something that nice from Microsoft!
Thank you you fixed my controller it wouldn’t work when I put the batteries in but when you said put the battery contacts in that hole it fixed it thank you
Đen Nguyễn Krylon for plastics, have to be careful what kind of paint you use. Some paints will "melt" the plastic. Be sure to spray it with primer, then your paint whatever you want on it, once you're done, you'll want to clear it. If you want this paint scheme to last, dry each layer in your oven. Turn the oven on it's lowest setting, let it heat to about 120 then turn it off and put the controller pieces in to allow the heat to dry and cure the paint. Sounds like alot of work, but it's the only way to get the paint to last.
Yeah, i came here just for this purpose, does anyone have hints for hydro dipping? I was experimenting, so far i covered the body with an acrylic spray can and then a second layer with clear polish spray, but the result is not quite as smooth as expected. I'm also having an hard time in properly preparing the hydro dip with clear nail polish, any hints?
Jan 2022: Very helpful video. Managed to use a 2mm wide flat bladed precision screwdriver instead of a Torx bit. Will lock itself offset between the security point and the inside edges of the screw head.
