    I've removed two comments already that were just unnecessarily rude and abusive.
    If you'd like to politely state your case for why you think Apple Arcade exclusivity is a good thing actually, I'm willing to have a civil discussion with you. But if you can't do that without insulting or harassing me, I'm not going to entertain that.

    This really sucks considering that I missed ALL chances to download Puyo Puyo Quest! I was hoping that Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop would another Puyo Puyo app for me to download. But nope! Sega wants the bling bling more :(
    On the bright side though Puyo Puyo Tetris got me hooked into the series when I was 10 because of the art style and puzzle aspect. I am very happy to announce to I am making a manga inspired by this series! ❤

      As I said in the essay, I do have to acknowledge that it was a lot of players' first introduction to the series. Had to have been since nothing else had been localized since 2004.
      I wouldn't hate PPT half as much if, after introducing new audiences to the series, Sega then went on to use that opportunity to promote a mainline game and actually move forward. But... that didn't happen, that's why I'm upset.
      What I hate is where we are today. All we got in the end is... this.

    I love how it's not even a month into Puzzle Pop's lifespan and already it has a 4.7 out of 5 on the App Store.
    Not only did this video age poorly, it's the Sonic: Dream Team situation all over again - people said Dream Team being Apple Arcade exclusive would be the end of Sonic and it turned out to be not so, and Puzzle Pop is now just the Puyo Puyo equivalent to this.

    • @missingno_fgc
      @missingno_fgc  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you have the game, I would like you to try an experiment for me.
      Get out a stopwatch, go online, and time how long it takes to find a real human opponent - not a bot. (Note: if their name is AdjectiveNoun, they play very very slowly, and don't make any real chains, they aren't real.)
      I don't care how many stars it has. I care about the fact that nobody is actually playing it. Not even a month into its lifespan and it's already dead!

    • @GlitchanBlack
      @GlitchanBlack 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@missingno_fgcYeah, see, I’ve been reading through the comments section and you always bring up the same two issues - the exclusivity and the online. Frankly, it’s getting old fast, and I don’t care how much you want to push them as problems.
      The online "problem" is something that can easily be fixed if people can make friends in the Game Center (which shouldn’t be hard to do since this is the INTERNET AGE), and the exclusivity to Apple Arcade clearly has no effect on people who enjoyed the gameplay and story at all.
      So can I just give you a little piece of advice? Stop acting like the Puyo Puyo series is going to die because of two little nitpicks people have with Puzzle Pop. It’s the Puyo Puyo equivalent to the Super Smash Bros. fandom complaining that swordfighters take up a fifth of the roster in Ultimate.

    • @missingno_fgc
      @missingno_fgc  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@GlitchanBlack You mean that I'm bringing up the issues I made the video in order to talk about? Uh, yeah. of course I am.
      The reason matchmaking can't find anyone is because nobody is there to begin with. And the reason nobody is playing it is because of the exclusivity. Friend lists do not solve that. The only way to solve this is to put the game on platforms people will play it on - and give it crossplay.
      The point I have been trying to make is that when every release comes with a catch, the playerbase gets further and further divided as they scatter across different versions. I've been hammering on the importance of one definitive game with crossplay as the only way to undo that damage and restore a healthy playerbase. Exclusivity resulted in this instead, a game that is nobody is playing.
      Get the stopwatch. Actually try it and see the point I'm making here. If this exclusivity deal is so great, *why isn't anyone online?*

    • @GlitchanBlack
      @GlitchanBlack 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Here’s a deal: how about you actually look up gameplay of Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop, and I’ll get the month long free trial of Apple Arcade so I can do your challenge?
      Because from the way you deleted my reply and two other people’s comments, you seem to come off like some of the other people I’ve met before in the FGC that have had opinions like yours. A coward that tries to hide when backed into a corner.
      I hate to be blunt, but if you want us to play that way, then that’s the way we’re going to play.

    • @missingno_fgc
      @missingno_fgc  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GlitchanBlack I have looked it up. I've watched videos of players sit in the ranked queue for long periods of time without finding a single human opponent.
      Tell me, why are there no opponents? Why isn't anyone playing this game?
      Perhaps I should explain where my perspective is coming from. I was formerly a competitive Puyo Puyo Champions player, commentator, and tournament organizer.
      I say formerly, because for all the effort I put into trying to run and promote both online and offline events, I had to watch the playerbase slowly decay and fall apart. Eventually I had to admit it wasn't working and I could no longer justify putting more energy into a game that clearly has no competitive future.
      The problem that killed competitive PPC was fragmentation, Puyo Puyo couldn't afford to compete with itself as different versions of the game split the playerbase apart. Over time it became harder and harder to convince people to play a game whose only hook is "well, at least this version has working online play", because sadly I must admit that is the only thing PPC has going for it.
      Ultimately, what I'm really looking for is a game that people will play.
      Puzzle Pop is not that game. No one is playing Puzzle Pop. I cannot run tournaments for a game no one will play.
      And if you can recognize why it is that no one is playing Puzzle Pop, then you should understand what the problem is - and what the solution needs to be.

    Ngl, PPT was the first ever puyo game I ever got my hands on. My first time ever hearing about Puyo Puyo was...well actually here's a side story:
    There's this game that was on the 3DS called: "Hatsune Miku Project Mirai DX" which was a rhythm game first and foremost. But there was this minigame where you could ACTUALLY play puyo puyo with your chosen vocaloid. I thought that segment was fun and learning puyo puyo was an actual game series, I got more interested and from there on the rest was history.
    But getting back to my point: PPT1 & 2 being the only accessible games where I can play puyo puyo. Sometimes, I regret not discovering any piece of media until years later. I would have actually love to play these games had I learned about them at my younger age. I wanna play these games, and show any support I can for this franchise. But most puyo games/media is so inaccessible...and that's a shame.

    Somewhat unrelated, but: A similar complaint can be made about Angry Birds Reloaded, which is also exclusive to Apple Arcade with no immediate plans for porting to other platforms. This is a shame, because it effectively "brings back 2012" like fans have wanted (by emulating the Classic, Seasons, and Space level styles), but locks it behind a paywall and only on a select group of devices.

    Part of me is convinced that Madou 4 could be the key to saving this franchise. And I PRAY that it escapes Development Hell after hearing absolutely NOTHING about it since October last year.

    probably one of the resons puyo failed was just oversaturation. there were so many puyo games coming out quickly. even though they kept getting better as it went the sales dropped a good amount. then the 3ds happened. fans were probably burnt out. they didnt buy the game. there probably are other reasons why it didnt sell. i havent played. or know what actually went wrong. idk maybe they just marketed it badly(probably not haha). there are a good few game series where stuff like this happens.

      I've been saying for a while that we only ever needed One True Definitive Game. Especially in the west, every single game released here had some caveat. Caveats that keep splitting up the online playerbase across different releases, which is why I hammer on crossplay as the only way the One True Definitive Game can undo that fragmentation.

      @@missingno_fgc yep, I agree with you there, but the IP is clearly not dead. For a Japan-centric IP one of the core issues is the console market falling out of favour in Japan in the early 2010s, and the continued success of Puyo Puyo Quest on mobile. I think Puzzle Pop has the potential to be *the* premier global Puyo Puyo game once it arrives on every platform under the sun. Sonic Team likely switched to Unity engine for this reason, plus it would help them enable cross-play. I would call the series dead if they mess up the transition of the game to other formats.

    I agree with a lot of your points in the video, especially about Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 being a lazy sequel with no real new substance.
    But after reading the comments, I wanted to ask, have you ever played puzzle pop before? I’m not trying to be rude at all, but I feel like most of your comments are judging the game by its online functionality and not its core story mode, which I would say is the main point of every puyo game. I can totally understand if you want a more competitive online Puyo game, but champions (even though unfortunately not many people play online anymore) is still a cheaper more accessible option to play online. Even though the bots in puzzle pop are…questionable, I would say it’s more of a good thing than a bad thing, as the bots allow players to unlock rewards online, even though unfortunately not many real people are playing it online.
    But, I got to play the story mode of the game with my Apple arcade trial, and it was REALLY good. The stories hooked me more than some of the other previous Puyo stories. And I think the 4.7 review score contributes to that. If you haven’t played the game or are unable to, I recommend to look up the stories online! It is really fun!
    My last point, and this might sound stupid, but maybe they released this as an Apple Arcade exclusive to try and encourage people to buy an Apple arcade subscription or buy an apple device to play it, resulting in more money? Though I think it would also sell well on consoles.
    Anyways, sorry for the long comment, but the video was fun to watch !!

      I do not own an Apple product, and have no intention of ever buying one.
      It doesn't matter to me what the game is like if I can't play it. And judging by the fact that the online is nothing but bots, evidently no one else is playing it either. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is using the subscription service to hear it, does it make a sound?
      The bot situation really disgusts me beyond belief. That just tells me that Sega knew this game would be dead on arrival and tried to cover it up. But if they knew that, why'd they even take the exclusivity deal?
      Honestly wish I'd gone into more detail on this point (and I may have a followup planned to talk more about it...), but I mentioned in the video that the most important thing I need to see from Sega is crossplay. If Sega had put this game on all major platforms with crossplay, I'd be happy.
      But they didn't. I've been waiting years and years and years for a game that could have a healthier playerbase, and instead we now have a game that is so dead that Sega had to fake the online with bots. A game that I can't play, a game that nobody else is playing.
      And frankly, I just don't understand how anyone can think this is okay. I feel like anyone who cares about this game a fraction as much as I do should also want Sega to do better than this.

      Taking matters into our own hands might honestly be the best chance we'll ever have, since Sega's clearly never gonna do a damn thing.
      There was PuyoVS, but it's old and unmaintained, and we don't have source either. Gelavolt was in development, runs in a browser which I think is ultimately a lot better since no download means no barrier to entry for anyone to just check it out out of curiosity. But the GitHub repo hasn't been updated in a year now, so I think it's dead now.
      Problem is, I fear it's going to be too difficult for a fangame to sustain an active ranked player population. Tetrio can do it because Tetris is a massive household name that everyone knows, but I don't think we can ever hit the kind of numbers they have. There's a certain critical mass that's necessary for this to work at all, to be able to queue up for ranked at any time and find people, and I don't know if that's possible.
      But again, Sega ain't doin' nothin', so I don't know where else we can go. Maybe it's worth a try. Not like we have anything to lose.
