“Explorers” (1985) is one of your enjoyable 80’s adventures, which focus on young people who are off for an exciting journey… This time three friends, performed by Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix and Jason Presson do the impossible and build a functioning spacecraft in their backyard… While director Joe Dante felt that the movie wasn’t finished at all, the studio had a different opinion. In thoughts the movie would not work out this way, Dante’s composer of choice and upcoming longtime collaborator Jerry Goldsmith, with whom he successfully worked together before on “Twilight Zone: The Movie” (1983) and “Gremlins” (1984) was indeed rescuing the project as the director recalls in an interview with Tim Burden: “The movie was released without being finished and Jerry’s job was it to knitted all together and make it all look like it was on purpose. And he did some remarkable work on that film.” Goldsmith succeeded indeed and we are going to enjoy his work now.
Dante always had smart, great composers. Explorers is wondrous. Gremlins2/Matinee/ Explorers/ Small soldiers/The ' Burbs and Looney Tunes: Back in Action....what a run....
This movie has a very, very special place in my life. Even though the final product wasn't what Dante had planned, the magic totally worked on ten year old me. One of the first movies I had recorded on VHS. I do believe most children can be sucked in the plot and general atmosphere. Title says it all. Thank you very much for providing this suite, Fred.
Love this soundtrack. I got it on cd years ago as a Christmas present from my ex. Kinda hurts when I hear it as I’ve always missed her. Miss the 1980s movies and Jerry goldsmith. Cinema isn’t the same anymore :(

Il 1985 è stato un anno molto creativo per Goldsmith in celebri film come "Rambo 2", "Legend", "King Solomon's Mines", "Baby". Ogni volta che riascolto le sue melodie di quel decennio, vado in estasi! Delle sue musiche di fanta-avventure, riusciresti un giorno a realizzare le suite di "Logan's Run", "Coma", "Capricorn One", "The Swarm", "Alien", "Outland", "Runaway", "Supergirl", "Poltergeist 2-3", "Innerspace", per favore?
Great Goldsmith score as usual, but the film is most notable for doing what one critic described as "a shocking about face" halfway through when the aliens we've been waiting to see turn out to be cartoons. Hmm...
