Phil, you are a genuinely smart and nice guy. This is my favorite guitar channel. I watch the videos early Saturday mornings and I look forward to it every week. Stay frosty!
Thanks for the great podcast Phil!! I have a question hopefully you can answer on next live show. Hi Phil, Back around the mid 1990’s I flew with my children from the U.K. to Disney in Florida, and after picking up the dodge hire car from the airport, I turned on the radio and the station it was tuned to played a track from Tim Pierce’s cd album, “ Guitarland”, and Inwas blown away!…. I went to Best Buy and purchased the album and now almost 30 years later, it is still my favourite instrumental album. For any guitarist, I beg you to listen to it on TH-cam, Spotify, etc because if you die before you hear it, you have missed out on a special occasion!….. Great work as always from you, Phil, kind regards Greg Bell, a fan from across the pond!
You gave me light bulb moments regarding the Synergy 20. I was thinking about unloading my Friedman Runt and getting the Little Sister (Dirty Shirley), but ideally would love the 2-channel Twin Sister. Since I only play at home for fun, a poor man's Twin Sister would be the Synergy 20 with 2-channel Dirty Shirley module. Then add a BMAN module for my Fender fix. Have it all in one platform! Also easier to ship modules for repair than whole amps!
I recently bought a red 339 and a trans ebony one as well. Great guitars! Fantastic weight, tone and feel. The neck is a little chunky but still plays great.
Well to my mind, you really ARE a great purveyor or guitar smarts and general life wisdom. AMAZES me how effortless it looks for you to roll out whole landscapes of useful insight and opinion. Thank you as always.
Headless: about 6 months ago I bought an Eart GW-2 (thanks largely to your review, as well as others). I just wanted an inexpensive compact guitar to leave out next to my desk, as I WFH and I just pick it up when I'm not too busy or in meetings, play for 10 minutes or so. My other "nice" guitars all live in their cases... which means I have to make an effort to play them. Since getting the Eart I play multiple times every day, it's pretty amazing. Thanks for all you do.
After I watched Steve Stine's video about the meandering style of practice and tried it... now I can play the whole fretboard of the pentatonic scale without thinking. That was the best advice I've ever gotten from an online video/teacher.
Another option for attenuating an amp is a device that goes in the effects loop, such as the JHS Little Black Box ($65). -- RJ's last name is Ronquillo (not Ronquilio). -- Most of those 3 or 4-digit numbers in the user names were automatically added by TH-cam when they suddenly decided that early users don't deserve to hog certain user names. It was a complete surprise when my user name suddenly got longer with random digits.
Great channel, awesome reviews, PRS McCarty 594 is great. What’s the best thing to shim the bridge post toward the tailpiece to get 1/8” more effective string length on Epiphone Les Paul Trad. II ? OR, does the Gotoh bridge accomplish the same thing for $35 ?
I have a CS-356. Like your 339, but cherry. Love the size. Just wish the neck was a bit more like my Junior. Bought it new almost 20 years ago. It's a great guitar.
Hasn't Phil done that already? The guitar being dropped off a wall hanger by a kid and the rest of the family then rushing out the store leaving the kid behind etc.
Want to add about Tim Pierce and his course: I took it through the offer last year and the magic as Phil says is in the person, not the material. He himself gladly and loudly admits he was surrounded by guitar gods like Lukather etc that made him the player he is. It’s a fabulous course and the only reason I’m not renewing this year is my focus is a different style of guitar shred that likes of Berndt and Ben Eller cater for better, in my opinion. Don’t regret a second of the time spent with Tim and will miss the members only hangouts but you can’t be part of everything at the same time. The guy is pure class though!
I was visiting Cali two years ago and messaged Kevin from Iconic if I could come by and get a tour and he said absolutely. They were very gracious- gave me a full tour. Let me play a bunch of stuff and hang out and just chat about the industry and guitars. Very high level of workmanship and quality control.
Squire sonic stratocaster barre wood fingerboard sprayed fingerboard with baby oil and I got a blister. I can not learn to solo because i keep getting blisters 30 minutes of playing. seems like a lot of friction. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Enjoyed the Podcast Phil; as always. Heck, I don't even know any scales, I am a bit more than what you called in one of your Podcasts as "Swiss Cheese", lot's of holes. But, probably more like Limburger. The first solo I learned was from the Yardbirds album, "Having a Rave With The Yardbirds", and the song was Mr. Your A Better Man Than I. Basically, just moving the record players needle back and forth, trying to find where Jeff Beck was playing. It's is the way I have learned to play; all by ear and my ears have the scares to prove it🤣 Or I can just be playing and stumble across a lick from a song. Anyway, I will be looking forward to your NEW expensive Geeky Stuff, with MORE of it!!! Your are the only one I watch religiously on YT, when it comes to guitar stuff and have learned quite a lot. Thank you!
Hi Phil, the Line 6 Catalyst you talked about is the older version. They came out with the new version, the CX. So it's definitely blowing out the old stock of the old model.
Did he say what speaker was in that ‘64 Princeton? I heard him play it and then talk about what 10” speakers he liked… but I don’t remember him connecting the two.
Hey p h i l a show ago you mentioned wanting to check out a acoustasonic crazy thing is I picked up a iyv offset acoustic Sonic I figured Fender Jazzmaster had to be better much better for a thousand bucks yet what I found out there was not that much difference between the two except for one cost $200 and 1 + 1000 so I shipped it back to Sweetwater the fender
Hay Plill , Do you think the price of guitars will go up with the fires. 12K homes burned and more to come will be a big loss. You know the area had a bunch of vintage best guitars in them . I bet with the loss the prices will go up .
Don't sell this one! LOL I bought a 2007 when they first came out. One of the best guitars I've ever owned. Played it live a few weeks ago, such a big amazing sound. I'm always afraid of loosing my favorite guitars, but I always have to wonder why I don't use it live. I usually only play to an audience about 8 time a year. Mine has some checking, I was wondering if this is normal for a guitar this age? None of on any of the other Gibson guitars I've owned.
So you’re gonna want something you can send Bluetooth to and play along with. I used a Yamaha THR for years and recently I got a Spark amp and it does the same thing.
Yeah, I was looking at the Rehearsal from Walrus, but it's pricey. There is a similar pedal from Slow Gear Electronics which is a little cheaper, and then a small mixer would also work. But from what I see the mixer might be the cheapest, which is surprising to me.
Phil. There are gummies that will get you into such a meditative state that you could remember exactly why you offloaded the 339. Just immerse yourself in thoughts of those times and experiences with that guitar. this works for anything, such as why you did something or why somebody else did something. positive drugging.
only problem with the Tim Pearce course is there is no online cancel, you have to call, and for me thats a red flag as much as I would love to give it a try
I was subscribed some time ago and I cancelled online at the end of that year. I can still find the settings \ subscription \ cancel page in my browser history.
It was actually a guitar I supposedly won. Then I was invoiced for the full amount after I said anything and two streams made defaming me and calling me a dick because it's my name?
I think people want to follow the designer\ builder because they think the mojo or magic is gone when they leave. Think of Leo fender selling fender then everyone thinks all the later one's are crap!
I salute you for not going to the Namm show... it's like the Oscars and the Baftas..... just a bunch of superficial luvvies slapping each other on the back.
The thing about PRS is that they are a power-house of new ideas. If an idea works they flog it as cheaply as they can without sacrificing build quality. If an idea don't work, they clear it out of stock and move on. They are exciting, innovative, dynamic and brave as all get out.
Thanks for as always you know I started hearing about Nova guitars with the retros channel and it just struck me as so pretentious every time I after I heard it first on the retro channel I just turned my stomach and the spano fano or whatever the name is that's also to potential for me it's not even about the money it's just that whole thing it's disgusting in my eyes and this is not me Reagan on anyone who buys them you buy what you want and feel comfortable with but it's another thing when it's sort of put out there that's like a commercial or you know I guess I said it made my point in the beginning I just found it repulsive every time I hear again every time I hear no vote and I hear myself say it I just get so turned off and guitars like that turned me off and it ain't about the money sincerely David brownfield AKA Bob the blind bedroom guitarist PS I know no one really gives a damn about comments that are left on our most TH-cam channels and really all the comments do I help targeted number of people and like Phil who I'm not who I love I think Phil's a great great guy and he has a great channel but really it just the promotesit promotes someone making money and more than really you having your voice search because in the internet of billions of people your voice really means very little except advertising dollar yeah in the end it's about making money all the way around every aspect of it and that's the American dream and I don't I don't I think capitalism is the one of the most amazing things that has ever happened and when done correctly it's a good thing anyway I'm all over the place yes I'm going to stop while I still can sincerely David Raphael AKA about the blind bedroom guitarist
I'm sure they're amazing guitars but the whole Novo guitar thing just struck me as a bit too "hipster" for my tastes. I would buy a Suhr or Tuttle or Anderson before considering a Novo.
No I've been looking at insides of my mind which is kind of strange to do cuz I'm blind but I have an easier time looking inside my mind and I do looking at the real world LOL but you know I was thinking you know guitars that are brands that are not made by the companies or in that that own them are not really those brands I don't like dramatics I love them but in my mind when I think of a question is that what I think of no I don't think that's a really good guitar I think that's whoever made it was called for arguments and it's a customer PR SSC it's not a PRS it's a guitar it's a custom guitar ordered by PRS from whoever company I forget who it is that makes them Epiphone to me slides under the my my my my my rules here of thinking because they do own Epiphone Epiphone is owned by Apple phone or even buy gifts and that's all right and I think the factory is even owned by them andthe people being paid to make those guitars even though it's in China or being paid by Epiphone and Gibson so in my mind they kind of get away with it made in Mexico fenders yeah I can go with that that's a fender because in the end send their own the company and pays the employees and so I guess I don't know if I'm making my idea is it to understand but that's kind of how I look at guitars these days what's the weather like a scratch is on the partly or maybe they have a majority share of scratch even though the name of the company you know is the partial owners the fact that they're not being made by a factory owned and run and pay for a bike racks to me doesn't make it a real crash I love the guitar and you just mentioned in between my trying to make comment to you A commentary about gospel guitars my my thinking goes along the same lines it's not really that guitar the gospel song that built by someone that you not supposed to know who it is but then again it's just a product of the company that built that guitar for whoever was hiring the ghost buildereven the Badland guitars same thing goes with that no real company names of Badlands that actually builds its own guitars it's not a badlands guitar it's the ghost builders guitar built for a badlands you know just slap your name on have someone else make it to me is I don't know I think I made my point to my satisfaction even though this coming my common is the sad this race sadnesses and disarray the song cries allowed I wonder if anyone's going to pick up on that three words or four words where I took that from but that's kind of the whole situation and this seems like it's being I was going to say dictated because it is dictated I'm blind and I'm using speech to text LMAO but it sounds like insanity butt in there somewheremy belief is it is made known not that anyone gives a s*** sincerely David Raphael AKA Bob the blind bedroom guitarist I think that's a discussion for the channel actually Phil PS is a PS you know talk about guitars today that are being made with a brand names that have nothing to do with the actual building of the guitar I said ordering it like you know no different thing going to any any custom builder and have them build you something and shoving your name on it😊
I think Fano struggled to keep its reputation after Fano left for Novo, but the guitars really were/are as good as when he was there. I just got a Fano JM6, and it's glorious. It has the most perfect neck, fretwork, pickups, and overall craftsmanship.
Phil, i can't care less about what you are talking about, totally uninterested, but i never miss a show , you are my ASMR, i like your positive attitude and your voice. Try to talk about racoon or fixing carburetors for a change to see it it relaxes me the same .
I've told my GF Phil's live streams are my instrument education and weekly meditation sessions. He has such an even handed, generous attitude and like a number of other music focused presenters, radiates the joy he finds. I remember him addressing that to Gibson, whhile discussing another one of their lawsuits. "Remember it''s about the joy." It's about connection. It's about acknowledgement. Thanks, Phil. You do all of that.

For my brothers and sisters who I have been with here for a decade. I won a guitar using super Chats on the searching for tone channel. It arrived unplayable. When I mentioned this to both the channel operator and the guitar maker I was invoiced the full amount for this guitar on the PayPal account I trusted them with.

I got this last year, absolutely money and worth keeping a second year if, like me, you didn't get through all of it yet or want to double back
Thanks for being the nicest youtuber!
Thank you for the amazing compliment and super chat. Here is to a great 2025
There are no 2 nicer, more genuine guys than Phil and Tim Pierce.
Phil, you are a genuinely smart and nice guy.
This is my favorite guitar channel. I watch the videos early Saturday mornings and I look forward to it every week.
Stay frosty!
Thanks for the great podcast Phil!! I have a question hopefully you can answer on next live show. I will be traveling later this year and plan to bring 2 guitars (EBMM Majesty and a Charvel Nova) but at least the Majesty for sure will go.. I would like to get your feedback on traveling with the guitars. I am thinking of getting a dual soft case to bring on the plane with me (to put in overhead or coat closet if won't fit). Any recommendations on that? Any and all suggestions are welcome. Also, if I have to gate check the case with guitars.. do I need to prepare the guitars for that? (loosen strings or anything.. I know it's low pressure and frigid down there). Thanks a million!! Rock on!!!
So many great guitars on that wall, but I'm drooling over that Warwick!
I’m about an hour behind but that was some of the best advice you just gave “think of the people”
You gave me light bulb moments regarding the Synergy 20.
Yes… I thought about this solution too… very good .
Oh, the 20 has two modules?! That’s great. (Haven’t gotten to that part of pod yet)
Just one module, but that module has 2 channels. If getting a 2nd module, would have to swap, which shouldn't be a big hassle.
Synergy’s terrific
Also makes a nice gift idea for your family to get you new modules.
Have a good weekend everyone!
I would definitely listen to a “Tales from a Music Store Owner” podcast. Would love to hear more crazy stories.
Great stream tonight Phil and team. Thanks!
Hey Phil, wish you were coming to NAMM for the hang but I get it. Hope to see you one of these days!

It happened! Marshall released a modded line of amps!
Great show as ever, looking forward to new geeky stuff coming soon
Sweet 339! Congrats! That’s a keeper. I have a 2010 GCS (Memphis) “Fat Neck” 335 (‘59 spec) modded with Tom Holmes pickups. Love it! 😍
I have a CS-356. Like your 339, but cherry. Love the size. Just wish the neck was a bit more like my Junior. Bought it new almost 20 years ago. It's a great guitar.
Yes do a guitar store horror stories episode,it would be fun to hear the crazy things that happened 👍🏻
Second that.
Hasn't Phil done that already? The guitar being dropped off a wall hanger by a kid and the rest of the family then rushing out the store leaving the kid behind etc.
@paulketchupwitheverything767 He may of done,I dont know that story though 👍🏻

Who in their right mind will pay that much for a Novo with the pine body!!! Love you all and have a blessed day!!
Phil your playing was so good today!
Squire sonic stratocaster barre wood fingerboard sprayed fingerboard with baby oil and I got a blister. I can not learn to solo because i keep getting blisters 30 minutes of playing. seems like a lot of friction. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks
I find guitar pro software a great tool to learn songs. You can highlight a section and loop and slow down.
PRS Standard 24 Satin is, currently at least, 2400 EUR on Thomann.
Phil, the 10-door analogy is crystal clear and very on point. Nailed it.
Have a good weekend all. NAD got rid of 3 amps not used and got me a Peavey Classic 20MH.
One of these days I'm going to catch this live. Adding one suggestion to learning a solo - try to understand the theory behind it, too.
Your A Better Man Than I. tell all the stories from the store! lol my favorite part of your shows are the stories
Hi Phil, the Line 6 Catalyst you talked about is the older version. They came out with the new version, the CX. So it's definitely blowing out the old stock of the old model.
Cruz had a little shop in Crossville TN and he closed it up at the end of 2023 or early 2024 if I'm not mistaken
My Fryette PowerStation is the best money I have every spent on gear. If you can afford that price point for an attenuator, there is nothing better.
I have a 2013 epiphone 339 natural and absolutely my favorite guitar
How about a Scream Back speaker?
Going to NAMM. It’s always fun for me to try out gear from around the world and see so many great artists. Great sessions for educators.
I love it when it's a Knaggsy day! Thank you Phil for all you do...
I would have to say Cinnamon Girl has the easiest solo. I rarely mess it up, lol
That turnaround though! 😮
Loved Fano; Novo-not so much, so good news!!
I'm a sucker for a sunburst; and that 339 is really gorgeous. (not a fan of hollow-body or gibson but..) How's the Neck dive ?
Did he say what speaker was in that ‘64 Princeton? I heard him play it and then talk about what 10” speakers he liked… but I don’t remember him connecting the two.
I see some basses on the wall
Websites - yes, many are very bad. It’s mind boggling the brands that want $3k for a guitar and can’t be bothered to list basic specs
Amanda Coombs is the best mod, she's so helpful and kind, and keeps all the shows she mods on topic and off negativity. Cheers to Amanda.
serial number also can be used by people who made copy of branded guitar, and upsell it
I assume that Gibson or Fender don't use 'ghost bulders' ? Other than some of the metal parts.
Phil, please do the Epiphone and Blues Junior comparison
That Synergy amp is genius
Any chance Fender Player Plus series gets a slight make over this year like the player series going from 1 to 2 last year?
For a guitar solo try Boredom by the Buzzcocks.

Booms always happen, but regression to the mean is inveitable.
OMG Amanda Autowah lols.
Do any of y'all own or have tried the funny little boxes dirt pedal? Or maybe Phil have you played it or heard it
I'll buy the 339, let me know if interested.
? Phil, I'm looking for a way to practice quietly with headphones/IEMs and use videos/backing tracks.
So you’re gonna want something you can send Bluetooth to and play along with. I used a Yamaha THR for years and recently I got a Spark amp and it does the same thing.
Maybe the Walrus Audio Canvass Rehearsal will work?
Yeah, I was looking at the Rehearsal from Walrus, but it's pricey. There is a similar pedal from Slow Gear Electronics which is a little cheaper, and then a small mixer would also work. But from what I see the mixer might be the cheapest, which is surprising to me.
One of the easiest guitar solos to play is Bleed American by Jimmy Eat World. 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
Phil. There are gummies that will get you into such a meditative state that you could remember exactly why you offloaded the 339. Just immerse yourself in thoughts of those times and experiences with that guitar. this works for anything, such as why you did something or why somebody else did something. positive drugging.
yeah, with gummies I immerse myself in thoughts of those times and experiences and completely forget what I was trying to remember... or why...
The guitar boom was called Covid
Quote of the day: If you want to be a better guitar player, play with better musicians.
Hey Phil the Gibson Les Paul classic isn't below the Gibson tribute I'm sure you just made a mental mistake that's all just correcting you buddy
Slip of the tongue, I guess he meant Standard.
Fender trademarked their headstock shape, Keisel trademarked no headstock shape?
it's like my patent on the air guitar (especially the headstock!)
how many guitars do you think you have bought and then sold for you yourself in your life? it seems like every week youre buying and selling a few
D Dynamic, M Musical, O Open
P Patent, A Applied, F For
only problem with the Tim Pearce course is there is no online cancel, you have to call, and for me thats a red flag as much as I would love to give it a try
I was subscribed some time ago and I cancelled online at the end of that year. I can still find the settings \ subscription \ cancel page in my browser history.
@@warrencm Thanks!! - Ill go see if I can find that, appreciate it!!
They should not have had namm out of respect for everyone that lost everything from the fires . 😢
No fans ? Thanks to the fans - jinx fano guitars rillee?
Bet you ten bucks dovydos shows up at NAMM Phil, I’m with you on skipping that scene.🤣👍
I salute you for not going to the Namm show... it's like the Oscars and the Baftas..... just a bunch of superficial luvvies slapping each other on the back.
Ridiculous prices... no way does this guitar justify the price...
Philly CheeseSteak. 🙂🎶🙂
No I've been looking at insides of my mind which is kind of strange to do cuz I'm blind but I have an easier time looking inside my mind and I do looking at the real world LOL but you know I was thinking you know guitars that are brands that are not made by the companies or in that that own them are not really those brands I don't like dramatics I love them but in my mind when I think of a question is that what I think of no I don't think that's a really good guitar I think that's whoever made it was called for arguments and it's a customer PR SSC it's not a PRS it's a guitar it's a custom guitar ordered by PRS from whoever company I forget who it is that makes them Epiphone to me slides under the my my my my my rules here of thinking because they do own Epiphone Epiphone is owned by Apple phone or even buy gifts and that's all right and I think the factory is even owned by them andthe people being paid to make those guitars even though it's in China or being paid by Epiphone and Gibson so in my mind they kind of get away with it made in Mexico fenders yeah I can go with that that's a fender because in the end send their own the company and pays the employees and so I guess I don't know if I'm making my idea is it to understand but that's kind of how I look at guitars these days what's the weather like a scratch is on the partly or maybe they have a majority share of scratch even though the name of the company you know is the partial owners the fact that they're not being made by a factory owned and run and pay for a bike racks to me doesn't make it a real crash I love the guitar and you just mentioned in between my trying to make comment to you A commentary about gospel guitars my my thinking goes along the same lines it's not really that guitar the gospel song that built by someone that you not supposed to know who it is but then again it's just a product of the company that built that guitar for whoever was hiring the ghost buildereven the Badland guitars same thing goes with that no real company names of Badlands that actually builds its own guitars it's not a badlands guitar it's the ghost builders guitar built for a badlands you know just slap your name on have someone else make it to me is I don't know I think I made my point to my satisfaction even though this coming my common is the sad this race sadnesses and disarray the song cries allowed I wonder if anyone's going to pick up on that three words or four words where I took that from but that's kind of the whole situation and this seems like it's being I was going to say dictated because it is dictated I'm blind and I'm using speech to text LMAO but it sounds like insanity butt in there somewheremy belief is it is made known not that anyone gives a s*** sincerely David Raphael AKA Bob the blind bedroom guitarist I think that's a discussion for the channel actually Phil PS is a PS you know talk about guitars today that are being made with a brand names that have nothing to do with the actual building of the guitar I said ordering it like you know no different thing going to any any custom builder and have them build you something and shoving your name on it😊
PRS "DMO" pickups? Is that like "IOL" from Arthur 2? "Instant On Lighting"? 😀
in every room! lol
@@PhillipMcKnight 😀
I think Fano struggled to keep its reputation after Fano left for Novo, but the guitars really were/are as good as when he was there. I just got a Fano JM6, and it's glorious. It has the most perfect neck, fretwork, pickups, and overall craftsmanship.
Love my 2014 ES-339
Cruz got fired for posting a funny joke.
Fender doesn't believe in free speech.
PRS are fugly! Bulbous. Their T looks goofy, too. Make a Vela Se, your only good looking original design!
Paul Reed Smith is the PT Barnum of guitars
The serial numbers can also be copied in order to make more convincing fakes. That is in times of CNC machining one of the biggest issues. And the Chinese fakes are getting scary good.
John’s post was pretty funny actually. The no-fun crowd was certainly upset, but f’em I’d say.
Novo guitars are so ugly.
What! There beautiful! 🎸
