Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome : Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome is a condition in which a person who is genetically male (who has one X and one Y chromosome) is resistant to male hormones (called androgens).
As a result, the person has some of the physical traits of a woman, but the genetic makeup of a man. Other names of Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome include Complete AIS and Partial AIS.
Androgen insensitivity syndrome occurs due to the complete inability of the body to respond to androgens.
Investigations done in patients with Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome include Blood tests to check levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Genetic testing (karyotype) to determine the person's genetic makeup and Pelvic ultrasound.
Popular model Hanne Gaby Odiele is known to be an example of Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome.
Treatment of AIS include Psychosexual Counselling, removal of Testes and Estrogen replacement therapy.
