Finally I was able to order Alliant Steel powder after 2 years of looking. I do like long shot powder. Operates my auto loader well. Having the majority of formulas and the fastest loads for Alliant powder was frustrating.
Proved it again today. My handloads far exceed factory shells. I'm not sure if I just shoot better with the lower velocity or if BB is better than factory #4. Or the shotcups are better or what, but I hit more ducks with them. For sure.
That is great to hear. I really liked this load when I patterned it. Just as good as Alliant Steel or better. I have compared factory and hand loads, hand loads are far superior!
Thanks for doing this and posting. Very helpful. Any thoughts on the variance in speed between book recipe and what you got? I'm finding it tough to keep the speed down with longshot. Wonder if the higher speed equals higher pressure (then book). Cheers.
Thought crossed my mind about pressure. I would hope we can trust the published load data in Status of Steel. This load was definitely running faster then the published data. I am using a $100 chronograph. Can’t guarantee it’s reliability, but is usually close. If you want a slower 1 1/8oz load check out my 2 3/4 loads using Longshot and the TPS1275.

@@pikeandtrout Cant imagine having to drive over an hour to the range. I drive 10 minutes, takes longer to get my stuff together. What if you were to use pieces of cotton ball. Just need something to take up the extra space.
I have felt spacers (sorry). Would like to go more then 1-1/8 (as in fill the full space of TPS 1230 wad). Bit reluctant to try 1 1/4 with longhsot. If that makes sense. I find really anything does well for me under 40yards. I range my 12ga at 50yds and 10 ga at 65yds. so trying to find a good 3" load using longshot as steel is always out of stock.
Seems the 1230 wad is no longer available or has changed to possibly the TPS 35mm. No 3221230 part number any longer, just the 3227735. Is the 35mm the same wad?

@@williamcarter746 I’ve been told by ballistic products the “Multi metal” wads are different then the TPS series, but Wade Rush says they are the exact same wads. Along with the wad which used to be call “white lightening”. My guess there was/is a copyright issue
It’s good for all of those and have a good amount of published load data for Longshot . I tried it for target, but those are pretty hot loads for target.
Its a Caldwell chronograph so not top of the line but decent. I would think +or- 50fps. A lot depends on barrel length, shorter barrel slower speeds. I am using a 28” barrel. It would depend on what length of barrel was used for the test.
@@Duckslayer1096 I have the same chrono. I’ll have to try that load. I know BPI uses a 30” barrel for tests. Most loads from them come in lower than advertised for me. You didn’t do anything different other than flare that gas seal out? I feel like that might be what did it. TPS wads seem like they’ve got crappy seals. A lot of mine blow out
To get more accurate velocity readings, you need to subtract 35 FPS when shooting shot over any chronograph. The added velocity is probably from a deeper crimp than what BPI tests with, which is .055" deep.

Alliant is definitely superior for steel shot. But I also have had good luck with Longshot. Good to hear you found some Alliant steel powder.

Would you load this just with BB or maybe BB and #2? Need to load up a bunch for spring Snow Goose.
For goose I think I would use BB only.

Do you feel that Longshot is a good all around powder for Buckshot, steel, and lead shot? I can readily find longshot but really none of the others.

It’s what I started with until I was able to get Alliant steel and blue dot.
Have you ever tried any 1 3/8 oz steel loads?
Highest payload for steel in a 3” I’ve done is 1 1/4oz. I think the pressure will be too high for more payload.
One of the reasons im not into the unslit wads....

@@Mr.Nippit the load is from Status of Steel fall within pressure specifications. I can look it up if you would like the exact pressure.
