Collecting 'Witchetty Grubs' for fish bait

  • With a Murray River fishing trip pending in a few days, I decided to drive out to Mount Crawford forest and collect some 'witchetty grubs' by breaking open rotting pine logs to suplement the usual baits that I use.
The grubs are in fact the larvae of pine longhorn beetles, but share a striking resemblance to traditional witchetty grubs (which are collected from under eucalypt trees) and are an outstanding freshwater fishing bait.
Most of my traditional grub hunting locations were destroyed in the severe 2015 bushfires but a little cunning research allowed my to locate some new areas to check, and sure enough ....
Hopefully I can now convert at least some of them into fish! Stay tuned.
    PS Sorry about the hayfever.

Awesome. Reminds me of looking for grub worms as a kid in Texas. Thanks for sharing

Brilliant Frank, Doug has offered to take me grub hunting, now seeing how it's done I have less trepidation as it doesn't look "too" physical for a crumbly old guy like me 😄

Well, that's how I do it Peter, not sure about Doug's methods! He probably pulls the logs apart with his teeth 🤣Mind you the pine pollen gave me shocking hay fever that day, next time I will take some anti-histamine first.

Closest to you would be Mawson Lakes, plenty of carp there.
