I wasn't expecting to like this and ready to say that it would be a difficult song to cover. But I just can't.. this was great. True to the original and the singer really can sing and does a fantastic job!
I wasn't sure heading into it either - especially after doing John Farnham's version. Also, I wasn't sure how others would react - lol. Still, I though Tommy did an awesome job and there is room for all good versions of a song. 🙂
Thanks for this reaction. Tommy is always worth listening to. We fans tend to say he doesn't do covers, but upgrades. He will always stay true to the original and still give it his own twist. You've already got information on Tommy so I have only nuggets to add. Guy is a serious guitaraholic, he owns well over 30 of them. The one he is using here, he normally use for his Majestica work. He's added the font they use as decoration. Many times he is using one of his 2 replicas of Gary Moore's that a frie d has hand-built for himseveral years ago and the other week he finsllt achieved a life dream and got his hand on a original Gary Moore guitar. This spring he also got a Kee Marcello original guitar that he used in his cover of Europe as Kee once was a guitarist of them. Tommy is hood at arranging music both for himself and others. He has arranged some solowork for Floor Jansen of Nightwish fame They knoe each other as many eill point out, Floor is married to the drummer of Sabaton Hannes Van Dahl. If Sabaton does a cover, as they did with Motörhead 1916, it's Tommy who adapts it to Sabaton style. Just for fun he makes whst he calls Disneytons. He take an original song by Sabaton, the lyrics, and put them to Disney classics. In Sabston he only sings backvocals as the original singer and co-founder of thst band Joakim Broden has a very unique voice that fits their style perfectly. So for those who only heard his guitarplaying there before get quite the chock on hearing Tommy start singing in earnest. My favourite cover by Tommy is The Price from Twisted Sisters, but anything he does is gold.
Welcome to Tommy Johansson rabbit hole, thank you for reacting. Tommy is a singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist from Sweden. His day job is being one of the lead guitarists for very popular Swedish metal band Sabaton. He also has his own band Majestica, a band he started under the name ReinXeed over 20 years ago. These covers are what he does for fun and as a creative outlet. He does all the work behind his covers, back vocals, instruments, mixing, mastering, video editing...he is extremely talented musician with incredible vocal range. To get a full perspective of his range I recommend his covers She's Gone (Steelheart), Phantom Of The Opera ( he sings BOTH roles) and his own song The Light ( a re-recording of a song he first recorded with ReinXeed when he was 18). In case you don't know Sabaton, I recommend their song Christmas Truce ( they sing about history) and Bismarck ( about the German battleship)
Thank you for your comments, information, and suggestions. I have added them (including Sabaton) to my list. It should be fun to have a listen to these. 🙂
Awesome! We love Tommy and I always like to see new reactors discover his amazing talent! Tommy is one of the lead guitarists for the band Sabaton and also he has his own band Majestica! He releases a new video every Friday on his channel. This was a very good cover but if you really want to hear his range and what he can do vocally most people would suggest his cover of "She's Gone", or "You lift me up" one octave challenge...my favorites and the ones I always request are, "The Light" or "Over the Hills and Far Away"! Hope you continue with Tommy! ❤
This was a really good reaction … it’s so refreshing with someone that actually would say if they didn’t like something .. but that also really gives the song they listen to an open mind ❤ … as someone said in comments this is what Tommy started doing for fun and creative outlet while sick in corona 1,5 years ago ( also Sabaton tour schedule after Covid has been grueling, beeing out on the roads month in a row .. and then try to coordinate Majestica stuff ..it must be nice to have something you can do without being dependent on anyone .. except for his growing number of fans that expect a cover every Friday by now that is 🤣) He has said that he only covers songs that he think it’s fun to cover or that he loves .. so most of his covers are tributes .. some are challenges to bend into his ( basket case and antihero for example) .. I’ve only seen him saying that it is because many have asked so many times a couple of times( st Elmo’s fire and bohemian raphsody) but even then he would not do them if they didn’t speak to him in some way. This one is in my mind is a full on tribute ☀️ I to look forward to more videos with Tommy .. I second the suggestion for “the light 20 year celebration” it’s a unique cover since he is covering his own early work .. in that cover you can see where Tommy comes from ( first recorded when he was 18 and written a couple of years earlier .. could be as early as 14 when he did his first demos) .. but it is classic power metal so expect grand guitar playing, dubbel drum and speed as well as high vocals Also be sure to watch some of his Gary Moore covers. Gary is Tommy’s reason for being a musician in the first place. He decided to become a guitarist after his father introduced him to Gary at the age of 9 .. Gary is the single most covered artist on Tommy’s channel .. they are perhaps ( with a one or two of exceptions ) not the highest viewed but he will keep doing them as he does all covers out of the joy of doing them not for success on YT ( granted it is a nice side effect - and I’m eternally happy for it since I would never have found or been able to follow him otherwise) for Gary Moore try over the hills and far away, out in the fields, thunder rising, nuclear attac and murder in the sky ( Tommy recently got the guitar that Gary Moore played, when recording murder in the sky , in his possession.. he is playing it in this cover)
Thank you for your comments, information, and suggestions, Maria. I appreciate it. Tommy sounds like an interesting person and well worth looking into. 🙂
@@theray1319 Not to my knowledge unfortunately ..he has done a cover of Houndred of Thousands by Tony McAlpine ..I don't know if that counts for anything.
Tommy is a musical genius who can play all rock instruments and the flute, harmonida accordoin and more, he does everything in his covers except film it. And his voice is superb his range is F2-C6 so he can sing bass tenor, alto and soprano. Just pick a song from him it will be worls class.
Some people call Tommy Johansson "the male version of Floor Jansen"... Glad to see you react to Tommy. You can pick anything from his channel and it's top notch! Also check out his own band, Majestica and their official music video, "Above the sky". Majestica also made a Christmas album based upon the classic C. Dickens story, "A Christmas Carol". It's a true masterpiece! Tommy is mostly known for being lead guitarist of Sabaton. Great reaction, btw! 🤘
Thank you for your comments and information. I appreciate it. Maybe I'll react to the Christmas stuff closer to Christmas (although I am an anti-theist). Of course, that's not all that far away now! 🙂
He's self taught. I don't know but knowing he loves music with passion I'm sure he listened to a great variety of music. He also is a multi instrumentalist.
Loved it, Ron. Kid has a lot of talent. Looking forward to the next one. Wish I could donate, brother, but my fixed income won't allow me to show my support in any other way, but likes and comments. I hope others, more fortunate than I, can give in order to maintain the channel and its creator. My best to you, Ron. Can't wait to see what's next.
Thank you, John. No worries. I'll probably keep reacting as long as I have a pulse and I find listening to music enjoyable - lol. I love getting your comments and information. I appreciate all my viewers from around the world and recognize that everyone is in a different position. It's all good. 🙂
Team Tommy checking in from the California desert to thank you for enjoying Tommy's music! You cannot choose a bad cover off of Tommy's YT channel...but I usually suggest starting with his cover of Steelheart's She's Gone. It's not originally a wow song...but Tommy's performance shows off the best of his guitar/music skills, his vocal talents, and his personality!
Hi RJJ! Since you want to react to more of Tommys covers I subscribed to your channel. I don't want to miss out on the good stuff! I got a suggestion for you: Tommys version of Black Sabbath's Headless Cross. And yes, Tommy did all the backing up vocals himself and also played all the instruments. But the question we are all asking ourself: How did he produce the bagpipe sound???
Thank you for subscribing, Pernilla. I appreciate it. I thought they were his backing vocals, but I wasn't sure. Yes, the bagpipe sound was impressive. I did Erik Gronwall's version of Headless Cross, but I will add this one to my list. 🙂
