Great tips! We do group subjects first as well! It really helps. I use a cheap kitchen timer for my youngest son's "recess," but I think I'm going to start using it to motivate him through his subjects some as well. Thanks!
Omg your homework pile is genius!!! This is the biggest problem in our homeschool and I’m so excited to put this into place tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
great tips! i just started setting a timer for my child who likes to procrastinate. my husband actually mentioned it and it has helped with her taking her time. ive been reminding her that the faster she gets done the faster she can play. we dont typically start school right at 8. we have twins so we generally start around 10 but we are still working till about 5 pm when dad is walking in the door. so the timer has helped some.
This is very helpful! I have a procrastinator and it can be very frustrating! I like you suggestions and hope to implement a few when we start school back up in the fall. Thanks a bunch!
These are awesome tips! I have an only child and no comparison child to push her, if she ends up doing school late she just mopes around.. We do put her in our spare bedroom where we setup a mini desk for her for those tough days, and we use headphones as well.. Glad to hear other mommas are getting creative with this as well!!!
This is great advice, thank you. I have a 12 year old boy that constantly wants to take a break, but so hard to get him back on task. Love the headphone idea!!!!!!
By far the best decision I ever made (for our homeschool) was to invest in mechanical pencils! It seems silly but my student was up out of his seat at every chance to 'sharpen the pencil' haha, well, we solved that problem! lol
+ZannaTheGreat Yep! We use them too! I also have colorful erasable Frixion pens and they like to use them because they're colorful, but can also be erased.
Will you send me the link to your fb/blog? I’ve had my granddaughter since kindergarten and is finishing third. I’ve started having trouble getting/keeping her motivated. (Really BAD!!!). Can’t get past one subject in a day unlike the other grades. She learned Ssssoooo much the grades before. Thanks Nancy Baker
What type of timer do you use? My procrastinator is my kindergartener. I've been using my phone, but am curious should I get a more visual one that he could see..... What do you think?
+josefamp I usually use the one on my iPhone because it's readily available. But I've also purchased inexpensive cooking timers from the store and just used those. The kids tend to like the cute ones they wind up :)
I have a nearly 8 yr old who i feel is bored with our curriculum and procrastinates ....we use Sonlight (2nd yr homeschooling). I've been looking into a more hands on curriculum. Problem being that I've already outlayed out funds for school this year ( australia jan - nov) I'm not really sure what to do except try and make what we have a little more exciting and hands on 😯 any tips? xx
try focusing it on what your child is interested in. for example when doing maths try explaining like "if i have 25 dinosaurs and 13 dinosaurs went away, how many will i have left". that explain is for a child who likes dinosaurs. it can change depending on what your child is interested in. you might also try and have a sit down talk with your child and figure out why he is procrastinating and if he is bored of the work and what he suggests that the both of you can do to not make it boring. just some thoughts.
+The pallagi 4 Since you've already purchased it you have a couple of choices. 1) Stick with the curriculum, but add in a lot of fun hands-on projects that correlate with whatever you're learning. Sonlight is a lot of sitting and reading, so it's not as engaging for some kiddos, especially active boys! 2) I know it's expensive, but if it's really not working for you I would probably look into trying to resell it on eBay or possibly Homeschool Classifieds. Shipping from AU is probably quite a bit though, maybe you can sell it locally as well. That said, I would probably go for option 1 at first. Cut out some of the extra reading and add in hands-on projects. :)
Thanks ladies for your suggestions. I have indeed cut some of the reading...oh my gosh haha. and started to add in more activities and colouring/hands on/ moving activities while i do some reading for their bible (missionary stories ect). seems to be going ok with both my girls. So we will see how that goes :-) Erica Arndt
Just make sure it’s not adhd. None of these natural or unatural concequences will fix it and will leave them really hurt and develop depression and anxiety disorders
I'm such a procrastinator! I saved this video on a playlist and it just took me now to watch it.

Love the idea of doing the group lessons first. I'm going to implement this next year when I start homeschooling both my kiddos!
+Christiana M Yes, it's saved us! Plus I'm more likely to do them and not skip projects if we do it first.
Love this!! Thanks for the great ideas!
