I can’t believe he was diagnosed with schizophrenia (prior to any of this) and was found to be fit to stand trial and was tried as an adult even though he was a child 🤷🏼‍♀️
The kid was clearly very mentally ill and possibly mentally disabled

This is my life right now. My brother stabbed my dad repeatedly . We are still glad he survived, but now he has facial paralysis among other things.
The mental evaluation showed that he seems to have schizophrenia that has been untreated, so the court let him of easy with the promise that instead of jail he will go to an institution. The court required monthly updates.
And my mom found a place that would take him and told the court what the plan was, and…..didn’t do any of it when he was released. It’s been a week and we are all so worried. She blocked all of us on social media and phone. 😣

I don’t want to overstep my place here but if you want him to be institutionalized maybe you or someone else can call the police, his parole officer, the district attorney or someone else that is involved with his case. I would want my brother to get the help he’s obviously in need of and I’m sorry but he still needs to pay for the crime he committed. Please understand that I mean no disrespect to you or your dad. I wanted to let you know how I would do things if I were in your shoes. I’m so sorry about your dad too.

People are most honest in their diaries
Not to mention the whole "not showering for days because he was afraid of his brother walking in on him" that is SO SO real he actually couldn't have made this shit up.
He also just has absolutely no reason to lie about that, he gains nothing from it.

It's not that simple though. It's not a matter of just truth or lie when psychosis is in the mix, he could really think it happened and have all the trauma associated with that without it having actually happened. Tbh his mother didn't help with the situation either, both for stopping taking him to therapy and treatment and for the way she dealt with the SA situation (whether real or not)
All in all, I find it outrageous that he was deemed fit to stand trial. He's the textbook definition of criminally insane, he should have been sent to a mental facility to get treatment. It's really sad that justice systems are more concerned with demonizing people and getting this twisted sense of revenge and satisfaction at seeing a criminal getting punished than with actually prioritizing fairness and doing what's best for everyone

@@comdrive3865 Because it seems there's no evidence that his crime was caused by mental illness. Even if he is truly schizophrenic (and I'm not sure he is), he still murdered his mother and attempted to murder his brother _with the knowledge and understanding that it was wrong._ The fact that he had a bag packed and fled is evidence that he knew what he was doing was wrong and/or unlawful.
(In some states, there's a verdict available called "guilty but mentally ill," which indicates that the jury believes the person is mentally ill but also knew they were committing a crime and could have chosen not to do so. A person who receives this verdict goes to a secure mental health facility and receives treatment, but instead of being released upon successful treatment -- which is what happens to people found NGRI -- they are released to jail/prison to serve the remainder of their sentence.)

I suspect it was a delusion caused by his schizophrenia, which he truly believes happened. Psychosis and schizophrenia can cause very vivid "memories" and dreamlike experiences which the sufferer will believe to be the absolute truth despite them never happening.
I don't believe for a second that his brother harmed him in any way at all. Zachary's mental health was in a truly terrible state, he wasn't receiving treatment for it, and he was already suffering delusions that his father was constantly speaking to him and instructing him. The sexual assault is undoubtedly not a real event.

And when I called the cops they said that they is nothing to prove my story, so it’s just my word against him with no proof. And my daughters statement didn’t matter because she could have “Coerced” into saying that. Which breaks my heart wondering how many kids this happens to and there is nothing being done. And most times the parents don’t believe the kids. Which is more heart breaking 😢

I believe him to a degree, my theory is that this attack was a symptom of his mental health and was maybe a very vivid dream or a hallucination, so in his mind this did really happen but physically it didn't. Maybe he argued with his mum and she said he was a liar because she knew it couldn't have happened when he was saying it did, maybe Josh wasn't even home at the time. I find the whole story kinda off somewhere and I think it's that. It DID happen to him but not in the capacity he believes it happened 👀🤔💭

It honestly IS difficult here to be found not guilty by reason of mental defect. In my opinion, this case fit the definition to a 'T'. Additionally, it would not surprise me to learn that Zachary's brother assaulted him in *some* fashion (having four older brothers, I saw a lot of goofing off that got out of hand because someone got hurt or got the upper hand leading to further humiliation - usually having rug burns administered or soap scraped on their teeth, etc.) and his mother's dismissal of his complaint caused further anger and resentment to brew.

I've seen the Dr. Phil episode and I honestly haven't thought about this case for years, but your video has made me look at this case in a whole new light Eleanor. I think the fact that Melanie, Zach's mother stopped taking him to therapy when he was clearly mentally unwell says a lot about her character. Also her being in denial about Zach being allegedly assaulted combined with her allegedly neglecting her children after their father died adds to this for me. There was clearly more going on with that family in their house then anyone knew, to what extent no one will know but it isn't just as simple and uncomplicated to say Zach simply did this because he was mentally unwell and crazy

Hi Eleanor, I have a case suggestion for you if you want to look into it. In 2014, Jack David Smith and Amanda Bowen murdered Tina Goble, Cainie Johnson Jr, and 8 year old Trinity Maynard during a break in. After the victims were killed, Smith and Bowen set fire to the house in an attempt to cover up evidence of the murder and robbery. There's a fair amount of information about the case online, if a bit dispersed. I recommend this case because I'm a relative of one of the victims (I'm being vague for privacy purposes). This case greatly affected my family and has many of the hallmarks of the cases that you tend to cover. If you decide to cover this case, I would be happy to provide details and clarification. Please let me know if you're interested.

My heart goes out to the mother and Josh, of course. But looking at the history, like stopping to go to therapy when he was 11, I believe what Zachary says regarding the negligence of his mother & the assault by his brother. He was so detailed about it and even saying things like "not wanting to shower" - that's a common red flag parents could take notes of to suspect if their child has been sexually abused. I don't care if Zachary was the one who wanted to stop coming to therapies when he was 11, he was a child, he couldn't know better. His mental illness should've been treated and it could've prevented this from happening.

I had a friend in college who had a psychotic break after some kids spiked his drink with LSD as a teen. He was never the same. He once thought he had been sexually assaulted by orderlies in a psychiatric ward when in reality they were restraining him to inject him. His paranoia was out of control where he would think we had cursed him out when in fact we were sitting in silence. He began to think people were werewolves. It was very sad but it seemed very real to him but he was aware enough to go back for more treatment. It seems sad that treatment wasn’t sought in this case.

In a number of people they will cause a psychotic break and permanent damage. I have seen it first hand, and spent a long time surrounded by people who would always have a pocket full of LSD, some even from since before I was born and they told many a sad story.

I mean why wouldn't he lie? He's a killer. He blamed his mom for her own murder using weak excuses, and then he blamed his brother for assault and claimed that was the reason he did it. He's grasping for excuses that make him the victim, because he doesn't want to face the consequences of his actions; because he knows 'I was bitter my mom moved on and my brother isn't my bff anymore' isn't an excuse that justifies cold-blooded murder to a jury.
I really don't think it's appropriate for people to be making public assertions of guilt toward a person whose only accuser is the guy who killed his mom. Imagine he's innocent and comes across this comment chain. What a horrible insult to injury for someone who has experienced so much loss.

I’ve seen you write this out twice and I have to comment: bi-polar manic schizophrenic is not a thing.
You can have bipolar (no hyphen) and schizophrenia but there’s no need to add mania to the list - it’s not a diagnosis it’s a symptom that’s implied with the bipolar one diagnosis.
If your aunt has the type of bipolar that gets mania - it’s referred to as Bipolar 1. (Bipolar 2 only goes as high as hypomania - no psychosis not as severe)
So I’d say it’s better to describe your aunt as
Bipolar 1 and schizophrenic IMO. Not having a go, just a subject that’s close to my heart.

My grandmama passed away from ALS when I was ten so hearing it as a content warning is in a weird way nice??? I just mean that no one talks about it and it’s a terrifying and incurable disease. It’s horrible to watch someone go through because they are essentially trapped in their body. Their mind is fully functioning but their body won’t move. My mom went through hell watching her mom suffer but she always said she knew her mom wanted to be with her husband (who passed in a car accident about 11 years earlier). Hearing people talk about it is a really good feeling and people should be more aware and educated on it. ❤❤ love Eleanor always ❤❤

It's a very cruel illness Very hard on the family too His mother was clearly mourning the lose of her husband (possibly clinically depressed) hence the reason she neglected her young teenage son's needs.Ulimately it was a tragedy waiting to happen. My question is WHERE WAS THE EMOTIONAL SUPPORT FOR THAT FAMILY IN THEIR TIME OF NEED ??? 😔

Well done, that was a tough one. Even on meds a friend of mine who was diagnosed schizophrenic was on his meds He contacted me and some other friends saying I can’t get the voices to stop, can’t get the right medical person on the phone and was at his max of meds. It doesn’t take the voices away, we cannot fathom how disturbed this disease makes us. It’s not an excuse for murder but it is a reason you would self harm etc. I would say his fantasy about his brother would be part of paranoid schizophrenia, I worked with a woman who had this and they think total strangers want to sexually assault them. The drugs numb the emotions and incapacitate a lot of brain function.
So sad re his dads passing that’s tough on a really together family unit, I would say after nursing her husband and dealing with her son she was probably completely burnt out and traumatised too. The whole thing is so sad and destructive to everyone. My heart goes out to them all. 😢😢😢😢😢😢

The first thing that occurred to me when I saw Zachary's face in profile was the 'Hapsburg Jaw'. This is caused by inbreeding, which makes me wonder if this was responsible for his schizophrenia. Having such a large jaw causes speech impediments, which is probably why he talked the way he did. I think more went on in this house that ever came to light, and the story about his brother could be true. When he told his mum about it, she dismissed it. I think that when the father died she found it hard to come to terms with his death and instead of being there for her sons, just left them to cope on their own. Having to fend for yourself after the death of your father is very harsh. It is the parent left behind that should be caring for their kids. At the age that the two boys were was too young to start cooking and washing for yourself, especially if you've never done it before. As a parent, your grief comes second to your children's. It is your job to love, support and protect your children.

    • @kmbaldwin5325

I’m not the only one who noticed the Hapsburg jaw! As for the SA accusations against his brother, yes, they could be true, but a big part of Schizophrenia is that they tend to manufacture false memories of events that never happened, but they are 100% convinced that the event(s) actually did take place.

They should not be isolated, or raped, or tortured. It's similar with boarding schools, no one cared about the abuse there until Paris Hilton came out about their time there. Suddenly, the world cared about all those claims building up over years, and slowly rules changed. Which those kids still aren't safe. Oprah's school in Africa also had its sure of things that should have never happened. Doesn't matter though you put your name on this place, it is your responsibility for it. If you have the claims then figure out why no matter what, or better yet find better places. Or even better actually try to help the youths, not just tossing them away pretty much. Give them skills, and make them safe. If you can't see the issue with not following the claims he heard, or stop sending youths to there altogether putting them in harms way you are not worth talking to. Being blind isn't the answer we need to stop writing of famous people for allowing awful behavior just because they are famous. Phil is not innocent they blood is on his hands, and those living with the damage are his fault. He deserves jail, and to have his life ruined. i just moved into a beautiful house that was built in 1901 that was converted into upstairs and downstairs apartments. the Landlords nephew has the upstairs. the family pays for it because he has schizophrenia and cannot support himself. He is very odd, does strange things and has arguments with himself which I was told if I notice these behaviors to call family immediately and at times he's needed to be hospitalized. I think this case is so tragic. if he has had support this may have been avoided. This is just heartbreaking because I could see my neighbor getting confused and doing something awful but there is a large support system in place so he can live as normally as possible. Schizophrenia is no joke. love your channel ❤️

This is such a hard case as Zachary was very mentally ill and he had his brother SA-ing him but the way he killed his mother was awful and so brutal, you can just look at Zachary’s and tell something is off about him and it’s really unfortunate that he didn’t get the help he needed because his mother ghosted the therapist

My mother passed of ALS in 2001... took 3 years after her diagnosis... watching her die slowly, she lost her speech first, and begging me her to kill her because she couldn't speak and couldn't do things for herself anymore.. it's a different kind of horror. This case is sad all around. 😔

It's so sick how he killed her.
I feel kinda sorry for Zachary though, it's very sad that he didn't get any treatment and his mother stopped taking him to therapy. I know how extreme schizophrenia can be and he should've gotten sent to a mental hospital.
Also, I don't wanna say it didn't happen, but there's a possibility that the sexual assault was just a delusion/psychosis and he thinks it's real because those can be really vivid an feel real. Obviously it could be real but as someone who has dealt with psychosis themselves i know some things that didn't happen could feel like they actually happened.
(Edited bc i hadn't watched the full video before commenting)

🙏🙏🙏🙏 you have no idea how much I've been wanting to hear Zachary Davis' story. All I've ever been able to find are a couple clips on Dr. Phil. and that's it.

Watching my dad die from MND was heartbreaking, I am still not over the trauma to this day
