I remember skating for hours upon hours, coming inside have some snacks while watching skate vids and then getting so hyped up I’d go back out skating.
This was my life every day, especially during summer break while in middle school and high school. Skating a couple miles to my homies place that was close to several schools that all had some good spots. Drinking from water spigots that may just be from the side of someone’s house, bc there was nowhere else to get a drink. Then skating back home after an all day session l. Don’t know how we did it.
@@Naltddesha Yep, that's how it was done back then. Skate around town all day with no water, no food, no phone. Just a skateboard. Grab a drink from a faucet outside a building or a hose at someone's house. Then keep going.

The no phone thing especially, i think, has got to be one of the things that kids growing up with phones in their pockets will never understand I grew up in a town that had about 45,000 people in it. Not massive, not necessarily tiny either. So if we really wanted to extend our range (before we could drive) we would find a way to carry our boards on our bikes. There were several times where we had traveled way further away from home than planned. In would’ve been rad to be able to call a friend/parent with a pickup, so we could throw our bikes and boards in, and get back to home base with waayyyyy less time and effort
Peak time for skateboarding. The end of the 90's was a world full of amazing talent. Both World Industries and A Team were excellent collaborations of skating expertise. What a time to be alive and a part of it all. Thank you to all the skaters who sacrificed their bodies for the sake of advancing the sport!!!! Legends!
I remember watching this VHS at my mates place and couldn't fathom what I was seeing... Darkside slides and spins on one wheel.... ONE MUTHAF**KIN WHEEL!!! ... Rodney will always have a special place in my heart for showing me how creative a skateboarder can be with non conventional (at the time) tricks. He is an absolute Jedi.❤

Rodney is easily the most important skateboarder of all time, it’s not about “who’s best”. The beauty of life is diversity, no such thing as best guitar player, best fighter, best football player and so on…. Just different. But what Rodney has that no one else does is what he created. And he created most if not all of what everyone else is doing, or they are just doing a variation of what he created. No one will ever fill that place in history that belongs exclusively to him because of the tricks he created.
I wish he was the face of skateboarding instead of Tony Hawk. No disrespect to Tony, but, I've never considered him a top 5 or 10 guy. Danny Way would have also been a good replacement. Not only was he groundbreaking on vert, he also ripped the streets up in his younger days and was better than most at it.

Finally had a moment of no other concerns for the last 20 minutes. Miraculous evolution to witness and reflect on. These guys..... are /were so talented. They each /all created benchmarks for anyone who loves Skateboarding.
I did my own "stand-still-casper" ish flatlandly and the feeling is aaaaaaaamaazingggggg huhh that was 20 years ago. Its sad to see skateboarding is not supported by the government much.. but still its just an amazing sport.. long live legend Rodney.

Yes, the last birth year of Gen X is as far back as 1980. I know this well because it's the year I was born. I can't imagine a bunch of baby boomers being able or having time to skate, although I know there are some rare exceptions

Imagine those of us who grew up trying to learn is tricks with still-shot photos in Thrasher magazine. There were so many "dafuq is he doing?" moments skating as a kid...
I grew up in Rural Washington State. Lived in the middle of acres and acres of apple orchards. I had maybe a 30' x 50' rectangular concrete pad to skate on at home. My buddies and I would walk the mile to the highway and catch the bus to our tiny little town only to be chased off of every skate spot by locals and cops. This vid was the peak! These 2 were utterly unapproachable. We'd watch with our mouths agape. The clothing style, baggy pants, cool t-shirt, and a clean pair of etnies, dc's, etc. and you were the man! Great times. I still don't like artificial authority and it stems from them hating kids just because they stood on a board with four wheels. Skateboarding is not a crime! Never interrupt a child when they are skateboarding!
I'm so glad the guys pushed rodney to transition from flat ground freestyle into street. We wouldnt have 90+% of the tricks we do today without him nor would skating in general evolved into what it is today without him. Truly the god of freestyle and the godfather of street the GOAT with all due respect.

I give Round 1 to Rodney, by a small margin. Daewon had better flow, switched his stance, and had bluntslides. Rodney had flips out, and he did an inward heelflip and skated a round handrail. Those top-side 360 grinds (I call them cab nosegrinds, for instance, but for clarity they’re actually half-cab nosegrind to 180 out) are underrated. The freestyle tricks were probably frowned upon at the time, but they require so much skill, especially the truckstand flip.
I invented my own tricks back in the 90's but I never entered competitions,. My most technical trick was making g my way to the top of a steep hill, sitting on my board whilst holding onto side rails, and wait for wheel wobble before skidding off and doing a 900 Arial followed by a face plant. Was quite easy to master on £9.99 plywood Rad Rat with hard plastic wheels.
Grew up skating in the 80s into the early/mid 90s as a kid. Mullen was always the goat when it came to street. But he wasn't a celebrity skater. We all adored people like Vallely, Natas, Barbie, Muska. But if you asked anyone who the best was, it was always Mullen. He seemed like an outsider to the skate community at large, but I think he liked it like that. Good to see his entire career being humble and kind to everyone. Hawk was a fine representative; he had the charisma and a great skill set and he's STILL going. What a great community and time to be alive.
Im 43 these videos was when I was 17 , already skating for 3 years, plan B slick with Yoda on graffic Rodneys pro model. All respect to the Godfather of so much tech, but Daewon style and pop simply fluidity wins every time.

i skated/watched with Kareem Cambell at the south bank then playstation park in 2000ish.. he is fuxken wild.
