How to remove: Jeep Wrangler centre console - (EASY WAY) without destroying your handbrake cable

  • Quick Tutorial on removing a Jeep Wrangler JK center console.
    The difficulty: the console will not clear the hand brake - many suggest pulling so hard (even using straps) to get the lever to the position the console will free itself.
    A super easy tip to save you stretching (or worse) your parking brake cables and getting the console out with no damage and no effort.

    Finally did it. Took 4 screws out. Pulled shift knobs off. Easily. Took whole thing out ridiculously easy. Replaced stupid E brake assembly. New oem. Still all the way up. Now going to rear changing and adjusting damn brakes. Maybe that will tighten it all up.

      Oddly, that's probably the criticism of mine - I do not use its capability in any shape or form, stock would suit me better - I just love sitting and staring at it :)

    Had local shop quote shock replacement for $896. LOL. Dealer wanted 180 to replace e brake assembly. Did it myself.

    What about all the connectors. I got like 6 of them plugged in and I’m trying to reach them

      We took the top center section out first (radio, heater controls etc) the connections were straightforward ish, other than ours is a 2009 and nothing had been disconnected before, so used a plastic pry tool to help as very tight/stiff. The reason we made this video was we really struggled to get the lower console off, it just stuck on the gear shifter / handbrake as shown - our Rubicon has no switches in this section, so a bit stumped to make any suggestions - sorry, no help to you whatsoever factually - so I suspect its loosen all the trim as we did (seats out really assist) then its find where the connections are and pull off - if you can find a similar connector on the Jeep to try, so you are familiar with the connector release, that may help (ours are a push release which I find quite tricky, so its a push with thumb and pull)

    12 minutes out. 15 e brake in. The wiring has one plastic plug attached to e brake. Tiny sensor connection just pulls off.

      Our hand brake is excellent - holds amazingly well, so very little play to yank up and take the console over

      We found this way a lot easier and less fiddling about - to get the cables off on ours was fine - a massive pain to get back on 👍

    Mine was 2009 jk. I am crippled. Cannot bend knees more than 94 degrees. 2dr. 12 minutes. 13 mm on brake lever assembly home depot torx multi tool 4 screws. One disconnect. Tiny sensor wire. Jk 2dr standard trans.

    Why do you have to remove the wheel? Won’t just lifting the handbrake be easier

      You cannot lift the handbrake high enough to clear the last console part - well if your handbrake is knackered you might :) but then you need to fix it - or you disconnect the cables (a right faff to get back together ) or the easiest way I found was to release the pressure on the handbrake at the wheel and up it comes - I searched long and hard for a fast solution, many, as you suggest, just pull the handbrake up, in doing so (enough to clear) you stretch the cables etc (or worse, snap one, luckily I am too weak for that) but the handbrake is no longer functioning if you get it to that height.

    Sure removal was easy. You had the seats out, the dash apart, the wheels and brakes off. How about if your jeep is not already 90% stripped?

    It's funny I ain't mechanic but talking to them is literally a waste of time. Crawled under looked at every component done. Just match then to aftermarket replacement. Easy. Also went to Vavlvoline instant oil they upload vehicle history to carfax now. Guy said oil and antifreeze was replaced less than 1000 miles ago. Bam. Used so I didn't know.
