You're got balls of steel, sir. I salute you. My Honda blocks reverse when the revs are high enough. I have a 4 speed car (my Fiero) a 6 speed car (my Corvette) and my 5 speed Honda. I accidentally tried to shift into reverse because I forgot that I don't have a 6th gear on the Honda, so that is a situation where you could accidentally try to shift into reverse because you thought it was a different gear entirely and the position matches up
Well, why would someone accidentally do this? There is a simple answer: I learned driving in a 6 gear manual transmission, then I got my own car ( a bit older) which has only 5 gears, and reverse is on the same slot as on the reverse slot. Guys guess what I did on Autobahn with 80mph. Yeap I changed into ROCKET Mode.

After driving a 6 speed for a whole while, and now changing to 5 that was a concern of mine. Good to know the engineers were smart enough to account for dummies
Same. I'm getting a 5 speed soon and I was worried about doing this. I'm feeling much better about it now though. Judging by how hard it was for him, I'm probably not strong enough to force it even with both arms.
That happened to my dad many years ago. He had been driving a company car with a six-speed for two weeks and when he went back to his five-speed, he tried to shift it into sixth gear, which only resulted in some grinding of the reverse gear. You can't accidentally put it in gear, it requires much more force than you use when shifting normally. A very ugly noise is all that's gonna happen. I recently went from driving that same five-speed for five years, to a six-speed. Stalled the engine once when I wanted to reverse, but had shifted it into sixth instead. Still mistake sixth for reverse sometimes, but I've since always caught it before I released the clutch.
@@frjoethesecond I would be less worried about the transmission and more worried about completely locking my tires while hauling ass trying to get into 6th gear.
At least we know that we can't "accidentally" do that. I can't even get into the 1st gear when I am going faster than 20mph, the synchronizer doesn't allow me to do that. Float shifting a synchronized gearbox also has the resistance if rpm doesn't match.

One day my truck went into the shop for maintenance so they assigned me the backup truck which is identical but with the difference that it only has 5 speeds and the reverse where the 6th is. I was doing my route as normal when by muscle memory I engaged "6th", which was actually reverse and released the clutch... it was at that moment that I became aware of what I had done, I felt panic I thought the transmission would explode or the truck would stop suddenly, losing control at high speed, it was the end for me; Those and many other fatalistic thoughts passed through my head in a fraction of a second, but fortunately for me, the transmission safety mechanism did not allow the reverse to be engaged and the vehicle only remained in neutral. That was the greatest feeling of relief I have ever experienced in my life, but a feeling of tension remained in me for several hours.
Same has happened to me - I learned how to drive on a 6 speed and then, later on, drove a 5 speed after getting my license. I'm impressed you got it in reverse in the first place. Most old-school manual transmissions physically engage the teeth of the reverse gear. If the vehicle is going forwards this should be impossible because the gears will be spinning in opposite directions. All you'll get is a lot of gear grinding.
Right, no synchronizers so shouldn’t mesh
@@technophant Not quite. The gears are rotating in opposite directions and must be slid together to mesh. Gears that use dog clutches for engagement can still be engaged with no synchro, but you have to do your own gear synchronisation (a.k.a double de-clutching).
@@bjem2287 Correct me if I am wrong, I've never had one apart but I think the little mazda 5 speed that should be in this truck would have syncros on the reverse gear. In normal operation the purpose would be to stop the input shaft when shifting to reverse unlike older transmissions like the sm465 where you commonly had a slight "grind" going into either reverse or first with no synchronization.
With the clutch down, the grinding might still synchronize it given some time. Certainly not a good idea though.

Let the shifter return to neutral first, then put it in reverse. The mechanism to prevent putting it in reverse will disengage, and you won't have to force it, which could break something in the transmission that can get stuck in the gears.

At least we know that we can't "accidentally" do that. I can't even get into the 1st gear when I am going faster than 20mph, the synchronizer doesn't allow me to do that. Float shifting a synchronized gearbox also has the resistance if rpm doesn't match.

I have always worked with a dispatch truck that had 6 speeds, and I always had to take the same route on the same highway.
I'm cruising on a highway, shifting into the imaginary 6th gear although it doesn't exist and I let off the clutch. I was weirded out by how it feels like I'm in neutral and then it dawned on me that I actually shifted to reverse. I shifted back into 5th and I think that car hasn't forgiven me for what I've done, even to this day 😅
