mkbhd is a very good example of a creator who's used this style of editing and has refused to do the whole retention editing style and still has a successful career for the past 13 or 14 years now. His videos till this day are the most authentic and most informative in the tech space. he doesn't need to grab your attention coz at the end of the day, he or his editing are not the stars of his videos, the tech is and that's a key takeaway that I'm personally going to implement this year into my own videos.
I feel like it attracts a different age range as an audience. I can't stand retention style editing. Sensory overload for the sake of clicks and views.
As traditional filmmakers moving over to youtube, it's really encouraging to hear that we don't have to give into the stimulus overload style. Thank you!
this really depends on the type of content that you are making. if it's a commentary, talking head, or video where you do something like this, then yes. this style works better. but for something like a gaming video, it doesn't. for a vlog, it really only halfway does. editing is an art. not something you should think about like a math problem. that was the issue with retention editing, and an underlying issue with this style. people, if your starting out on TH-cam, do whatever editing style you love.
I agree with this, but there is a point where editing is TOO fast in any video that distracts from the actual content. I think editing can add a lot to a video, and cool edits and motion graphics can sometimes make a video more interesting and make people trust you more, but there is definitly a point that is too much editing.
It does depend on the type of video you're creating. The extreme would be a pop video where edits are often a split second. Sometimes the subject you are filming sets the pacing. The good thing is that there's room for many styles on YT. Some valid points here though 👍
@@ajflxme totally agreed. When I used to do commercial editing - yes don't judge me by my current videos cos I was an editor not a videographer LOL - the idea is EVERy edit has to have a point. Like it's emphasising something said in the video, and is part of the narrative. Film editors still do this....whereas the jump cut every 2 seconds gets draining and each edit adds nothing of value to the video. See also transitions - you're not supposed to use more than a few, and definitely never many different types in one scene, and they are supposed to be for a reason, like saying 'time passes' or 'I've now moved location'. Not just 'hey are you still awake out there?'.
@@thats_joy_with_mark some of the best ever pop videos break this rule. Like...Sinead O'Connor's breakout video. Mostly one shot....the point is - be different, and have a reason for what you do. So if it's a manic dance track, hell yeah, edit every second. But you know what? A single static shot might be interesting too, because it hasn't been done for that type of genre or video. The problem is everyone is chasing being MrBeast, and it leads to a lot of boring copycats. Variety is what TH-cam needs.
I totally understand your point of view but for me Mrbeast just gives us a chance to be more authentic then he was. Think about, if Mrbeast don't use your storytelling or video editing in his style, we can't do something simple. In my opinion :)
This is encouraging to hear as a beginner TH-camr! This is the era of the video essay, where people put on TH-cam in the background while they go about their lives. But if they do watch, they want to be entertained visually too. Trying to balance that seems like the key, which is why both video and audio are important on here.
Definitely understand the older views part. I make camping/garden outdoor stuff. Pretty slow paced. But older people really like to watch and interact. It’s a lot of fun.
MUSIC TO MY EARS! been noticing this shift (which has been exciting because I've never resonated with the retention edited style vids) and you made it so clear + some incredible observations about pros and cons, thank you!!! Such a quality video :)
I think the thing you missed is that this style is also EASIER for new TH-camrs or people who want less editing time, without the fancy OTT cuts, sounds, visuals etc., it should totally encourage most of the creators watching this!
I've learned that true retention editing doesn't have to mean crazy fancy edits or crazy things to overwhelm dopamine sensors. I realized this while watching an insanely well-produced superhero movie with long unabridged "action" scenes. These scenes cost millions of dollars in editing to produce, and I was bored within a few minutes. The movie only got my attention again after it cut to a very basic, "boring" scene that included some down to earth humor and a return to the development of the plot. That's when I realized that stimulating someone visually or through music is different from stimulating the mind. If you can only stimulate with fast-paced retention editing, you are in a losing battle that takes a lot of work to keep up. And at the end, viewers leave unsatisfied and not likely to come back for another video. So I stopped doing that. I now do very "basic" editing with maybe some light music here or there. I focus more on having intriguing content and telling an intriguing story. As a result, my videos get very good retention - 40-55% on a 30 minute video, which is insane. And a huge number of my viewers binge my content after discovering it - watching all of my 20+ minute videos within a few days. This has led to an average of well over a million views per video over the video's lifetime. Trick someone into watching with retention editing and you'll have a fan for a day or an hour. Provide them with valuable content that teaches them something new and gives them an "aha" moment, and you'll have a fan for life.
We could definitely use this information in our videos. Thank you for not makin this over-complicated or trying to sell me a course. We'll be sure to implement this in the next few episodes.
As a newbie in video editing, I'm really tired of seeing the same types of videos on TikTok. Everyone's edits look the same with all the sound effects and movements. I hope more people find your video. Thanks for this!
This is very encouraging for me because I just want to create great content and share from my heart, and not get lost in video editing I just came across your channel this evening, and I’ve watched almost all your videos at a go. Thank you!
I appreciate this take. it's just using editing as tool, to strengthen the point of the video. I've seen people recommend _anti-editing_ and I think that's an over correction, also it only works for certain personality types.
I’m glad the more personal, conversational style of editing is coming back strong. i fell into the trap of doing all the retention editing stuff and it kind of took the fun out of making videos. then eventually i realized “wait… its not like i’m targeting teens with my content.” I realized i don’t my audience doesn’t need all that. so now my videos are way less edited and more conversational. and i’m really enjoying creating again. thanks for the video 🔥
I pointed this out in a recent video - partly parodying in fact those 'OMG 1 SECRET TO MAKE YT CHANNEL EXPLODE!!!!111' type videos in fact...that a lot of the 'advice' is really bad out there. It's not good for everyone's niche, and to be happy making your content and show it is the biggest secret on TH-cam. Not chasing endless thumbnail revisions or even worse - "make videos around your thumbnails"...what in merry hell is that? A one-way trip to alienation, that's what. And also leads to a lot of dumb low-value content.
Great video, you did exactly what you were talking about! I think this captivates how I feel about content creation. I’ve always wanted to post my own authentic content but I’ve found it hard to keep people watching when being authentic. Going to try these techniques and hopefully I’ll see some results.
It’s definitely hard to do so if you aren’t comfortable in front of a camera. But you can cut your videos in ways that flow smoothly and still come off as authentic
Man I love this! I’m stuck between trying to be like a cross between Casey Neistat and Sam Sulek. I think this video could revolutionise the way I edit
Great video man. This editing style suits me really well, as it's less time consuming, and I can focus more energy on my music and improving the substance of my content. As a music channel, I think that's where the juice is!
I’ve been watching loads of videos to try and find the right way to film and edit, this video seems perfect for what I’m doing, which is used shoe reselling, and obviously talking about used shoes doesn’t call for jumps and flashes all over the screen but I want viewers as potential buyers. I really appreciate this Oscar, thanks so much.
Surprisingly this is a good video. I thought you are going to tear down other TH-camrs just because you think you have a better method but no. You shared a mew perspective of video editing citing a few and yourself 🎉. Respect unlike some other TH-camrs who do created a similar video am impressed honestly!
So this means that hopefully my AVR improves because peoples attention span will get longer, people have been dropping off at 2-3 minutes on my videos and I don’t do retention editing so this is good news
Great advice here. For me, it’s more about attracting the right type of viewers that will eventually listen to my music and buy my products. I’d rather have less subscribers that are super fans than millions with short attention spans.
I really hope it does take off because a lot of the retention style is focused on capturing the short attention span of young people from being conditioned on crappy platforms like tiktok. I think this new style is for older audiences who just want a slower pace video to absord information. The retention style will still be used a lot for teens and younger viewers and I don't know if this is a good thing as hard-wiring young people to develop terrible attention spans leads to problems when they reach adulthood.
This was one of the best practical videos on TH-cam marketing I've seen. The fear that I needed "Mr Beast" style editing stopped me from starting a TH-cam channel earlier and I wish I got started earlier. I've accidentally followed a similar formula to the one you mentioned and already have nearly 400 subscribers from just 4 videos and 10k views on a brand new channel. Not crazy results, but far exceeded my expectations. Great job on this vid man! Great advice for the solo creator who doesn't have a huge team/budget/production house
Most people prefer simple editing videos while it's easy to understand what's going on instead just zooming, having too much text on screen and too much going on with colors in background
I'm kinda glad i'm hearing that this "Authentic" editing is happening because when I started TH-cam(I'm newbie btw) I wanted to not "Overedit"(As I called it back then) so that I would differentiate myself from others as well as giving the game(I wanted to be a gaming channel) I play to have a voice to speak for itself while not putting too much time editing, i'm currently 1st year into college so that kind of shit ain't the best to suggest & practical. I just wish somebody were to critic my vids and hopefully improve. Anyways TH-cam is a grind and played a lot of grindy games, what's more TH-cam.
The titles of the videos aren’t really intriguing. One of your most viewed videos is about the jrpg that the viewers have never heard about. Now that title is interesting because it sparks the viewers interest. It could have gotten more views with a simpler thumbnail. Keep putting in the work and you’ll grow in no time :)
@@Jm_Edits_100 Thank you, dude! Another TH-camr saw my vid and said almost the same thing, in fact the JRPG title was actually his suggestion. Again, Thank you! I'll try to follow the suggestions as best as I can.
@@Grand_Kekthew_ No problem I also saw that your voiceover kind of got messed up, but if you can include one in your upcoming videos, they should perform better
It’s not a new editing style bud. It’s been around for quite a few years already with utubers like mkbhd, markiplier and other OG utubers. It just so happens that the “Mr. Beastification” on utube highlights these authentic videos more at the moment. In the end, both styles work depending on what ur trying to do.
Fantastic video! I'm a new guy on YT but whats crazy is that my minimally edited videos where I really just ramble for 30 minutes have done exponentially better than my more editing focused videos. My demographics already totally back up what you are saying also. 80% of my viewership is 25-45 years old. Thank you!
You nailed it. Great stuff... More and more users are going to largeer screen TV to watch content, while retention fast cuts works great on a phone or laptop, on a larger screen PC monitor or TV it leaves you exhausted. It's like watching any Michael Bay directed film. A slower more cinematic approach works great for larger screens and for many genres. Do what works best for your niche.
I love the concept. Whag would be ideal is examples. From the perspective of a beginner show examples. So show a 30'second clip no edits... high retention and then how you would do it. I know you used some examples and that's awesome but seeing the same clip edited differently can be powerful for us beginners!
Great Video man. The one sentence that got me was : If your doing retention editing videos - your going to attract a younger audience with less buying power.. so its practically an double edge sword. it's like poeple working hard to impress other people that are not their potential customers.
Good advice. Retention editing at the start, or somewhere where it adds value, - it's fine to use the tricks of TH-cam but you have to use them for good not evil. And then build a relationship and show you like making videos and you love what you do in your video. This is the real secret sauce. But weirdly seems a lot of people are quitting, partly because they bought the idea that you have to do crazy stuff like concentrate entirely on thumbnails over tellling stories or good content ideas, or focus on the spectacle over value - and that value is as much for yourself as your audience. Cos if you don't find value in what you do, they'll sniff that out in a heartbeat. Also...it's about as much losing audiences as gaining them. You sometimes need to lose the people who won't add value and are dragging your channel and comments down, less being a jack of all trades. It's so important to flag your videos to those who are 'your tribe' to put off the others. This is where it's fashionable to say 'the audience is the algorithm' but that's wrong...TH-cam has no real idea who will vibe with your video - some hunches, and if your videos do'n'r resonate with the few it shows them to, it's not your fault necessarily. It's really a bit of A and a bit of B. And a lot of luck sometimes.
"authentic editing" is a style that I have been trying to master for so long now. I definitely prefer it over "retention editing" especially for vlogs or in my case paranormal content but I do feel like its a case by case basis, like if your a channel that makes extreme challenge videos then retention editing is probably your go to but if your a vlog channel then maybe you should slow it down just a bit. Thats the great thing about editing though is you can express your own style and if it works then stick to it
Theres always 2 sides of a coin! The balance between retention editing, and the anti-retention (authentic) editing has to be fulfilled! Educational channels are going to get back their chance to grow again.
The having to over edit is what turned me off from making videos in the past as I would be editing my videos, it made things seem like such an effort. Glad to see my style of videos getting more attention. Great video, great actionable advice Oscar.
Notice how videos that solve real problems hold high retention rate regardless of editing or even without having the best sound setup. The key here is value. When you're using youtube to sell a product then you need to be bringing massive value. The high retention style of editing works well for channels where the primary focus is entertainment. Not so much for utility-style vids though.
'Coffee shop versus nightclub' is a great analogy when comparing TH-cam video styles😁 What are your thoughts on running multiple channels versus a single channel for different but related niches?
I love how this video is the perfect case study for your claim, especially with the views to subscribers ratio here. I usually do vlogs so it's a mix of both, but the lack of a clear topic due to the nature of my videos is my biggest downfall lol either way great stuff!
What an incredible video! I'm a magician too, and after taking a break from TH-cam for a couple of years, I'm eager to get back into it. Finding the right balance of authenticity without overwhelming stimulation has been a challenge, but your video really helped me navigate that. Your content is fantastic! Thank you for the valuable insights. Consider me subscribed!
Thank you for this. Having decided to produce a weekly video for my audience, it is tough to balance quality over quantity. However, knowing that authenticity helps connect with viewers will certainly assist when realising that imperfection is as good as naturalism when creating videos. Thank you for sharing and giving me confirmation that each video is something to improve one's craft.
Ryan trahan is a good authentic editor I suppose. He does get my attention in the beginning, but it feels authentic to watch him do random stuff and everything and makes people feel good, and relates to people and shows how awkwardly social he is. I hope to try this new style of editing because it’s been 9 months since I made a video and reason is cause I take way to long to perfect retention editing. But I’ll try this new style.
It is refreshing to hear this perspective and I have seen the effects of giving people a true sense of one's self. On a few occasions I put out a video where I share a personal experience that is attached to the video topic. And my viewers expressed how much they loved the story behind it all! Thanks for sharing👍
Here's a quick tip that I would like to share as someone who has been on TH-cam as a one-man production team for over 10 years 👇 Start focusing 80% in making sure that your story/message is delivered with clarity and reserve only 20% for "fancy" edits. Not every transition/effect will deliver value. Let your viewer absorb the message and at the same time, don't get them distracted with the visual overload that's going on with your video. You'd be surprised that even the simple cuts can already make an impact. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm so glad people are waking up and getting tired of the visually overloading edits. If we actually look at Charlie (penguinz0), he doesn't even do crazy edits and yet he gets people's attention. Storytelling will always be king regardless if you have these fancy edits or not + consistency is really the key to growing long term. People nowadays want something done quick, especially with the rise of AI.
Just want to clear a few things up: This style really only works with documentary styled videos, or videos that Oscar does. Things like gaming videos or challenges and what not, this editing style will not work. People mostly click gaming content and challenges for the game or challenge, not mostly for you.
I am learning editing on CapCut and so I really appreciate this because my Faceless channel offers educational information but I was going down the road of Retention Editing because I had been learning from people that teach that type of Editing style. so THIS is a breathe of Fresh air. I think Wholesale Ted really has done this super well. I want to model her for my Talking Head Channel.

What camera do you use?
Thank you!
Banger thumbnail, man!
Edit: hey it’s me again. I commented before watching, I watched the whole thing. Loved the whole thing. Thank you sir!
Lol, it was stolen
@@JT_WARCRIME from where?
Glad your finally blowing up ❤been watching you seens the first video
Absolutely. I felt he could have demonstrated some actual editing process. But basically he showed through this edit style what he was talking about
I guess I'm part of the new editing style, but not by intention. I just don't have time for the flashy type of editing that seemed to be so popular.
The calmness in this video is soo pleasing!
I'm your 751st sub ❤
"authentic editing" is a style that I have been trying to master for so long now. I definitely prefer it over "retention editing" especially for vlogs or in my case paranormal content but I do feel like its a case by case basis, like if your a channel that makes extreme challenge videos then retention editing is probably your go to but if your a vlog channel then maybe you should slow it down just a bit. Thats the great thing about editing though is you can express your own style and if it works then stick to it
oh thank God, I'm so ready for something less flashy and headache-inducing. I wanna be the Studio Ghibli of TH-cam channels.
I think it's about having highs and Lows, hills and valleys. If you switch gears constantly, people will stay cos that's captivating.
I can just say "wow". I agreed with you 1000%👍🏼
Notice how videos that solve real problems hold high retention rate regardless of editing or even without having the best sound setup. The key here is value. When you're using youtube to sell a product then you need to be bringing massive value. The high retention style of editing works well for channels where the primary focus is entertainment. Not so much for utility-style vids though.
Just tried. Thank you it works!
Love how you tell all, and make looks easy :) (good luck for all the creators contents)
'Coffee shop versus nightclub' is a great analogy when comparing TH-cam video styles😁 What are your thoughts on running multiple channels versus a single channel for different but related niches?
I love how this video is the perfect case study for your claim, especially with the views to subscribers ratio here. I usually do vlogs so it's a mix of both, but the lack of a clear topic due to the nature of my videos is my biggest downfall lol either way great stuff!
lol didn’t think i’d see the sam sulek shoutout but i was literally thinking about him
My bro deserves so much more views
Hhahaha appreciate it! Its a new channel so it takes time :)
@@oscarowenbusiness yep I know and I'm looking forward to it
You used the iman gadzi style in this video. It looks good..
This is really awesome great work❤
Thank you bro
What an incredible video! I'm a magician too, and after taking a break from TH-cam for a couple of years, I'm eager to get back into it. Finding the right balance of authenticity without overwhelming stimulation has been a challenge, but your video really helped me navigate that. Your content is fantastic! Thank you for the valuable insights. Consider me subscribed!
Thank you for the video! It's something I was thinking about lately and you've answered all my questions concerning it!
No worries :)
Thank you for this. Having decided to produce a weekly video for my audience, it is tough to balance quality over quantity. However, knowing that authenticity helps connect with viewers will certainly assist when realising that imperfection is as good as naturalism when creating videos. Thank you for sharing and giving me confirmation that each video is something to improve one's craft.
feels really good to know im not the only one who doesnt enjoy the retention editing style 😭😭
I think the real secret behind getting this right is to have a carefully prepared script and really think through what you're going to say.
Great video. I’m all for the slower, more relaxed style. My brain can’t (and doesn’t want to) keep up with fast edits anymore.
The thunbnail in this video is REALLY good.
Great learning for me here.
Here's a quick tip that I would like to share as someone who has been on TH-cam as a one-man production team for over 10 years 👇
Start focusing 80% in making sure that your story/message is delivered with clarity and reserve only 20% for "fancy" edits.
Not every transition/effect will deliver value.
Let your viewer absorb the message and at the same time, don't get them distracted with the visual overload that's going on with your video. You'd be surprised that even the simple cuts can already make an impact.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm so glad people are waking up and getting tired of the visually overloading edits. If we actually look at Charlie (penguinz0), he doesn't even do crazy edits and yet he gets people's attention. Storytelling will always be king regardless if you have these fancy edits or not + consistency is really the key to growing long term.
People nowadays want something done quick, especially with the rise of AI.
Awsome work
Thank your for this video, Its one thing that makes me confident with what am creating because am aiming at creating a strong community
I have been thinking about this for a while now! Thank you for articulating it so well! Great video man!
Thank you 🥰👍🌹
Just want to clear a few things up:
This style really only works with documentary styled videos, or videos that Oscar does.
Nice Yoink and twist thumbnail. You definitely made it better.
