Can new Scales Improve the Best Pocket Knife of All Time? Flytanium & the Spyderco Para Military 2

- In this video I attempt to improve the greatest modern pocket knife of all time by putting on some brand new Flytanium scales. Flytanium makes scales for many Spyderco and Benchmade knives, and I test out the Jade Lotus scales and the just released new Titanium Lotus Scales for the Para Military 2. These knives add some nice contours, and subtly improve the ergonomics of the modern classic. I also show disassembly and discuss common problems when taking apart the knife.

The less content is more content crowd definitely appreciates your restraint.
I hope so!
This is easily the most realistic disassembley video ever
Keeping it fresh.
It really is the best knife of all time. Bought super high end stuff over the years and still always go back to the PM2
I consider this model super high end. You can find it in almost any super steel and more, there are aftermarket parts for it galore, the compression lock is life, and the blade shape is pure brilliance. Distal taper for the win. This is it. How can you even improve on it? What is higher end? It's in MagnaCut, CruWear, S110V, 20CV, M4 etc. and you can buy handles for it in almost any material. Omega knife.
I just put a set of these on my rarely carried digital camo PM2 that never was very drop shutty-fidgety despite how much I tweaked it. I only bought the scales on a whim in order to get my order to free shipping when buying a tiny Microtech tool to fix my Exocet. I have to say it did transform the PM2 into a more favorite EDC and fidget toy. The action is perfect now. Installation was easy. The mind reader-spies at Google-TH-cam must have noticed my purchase and threw this video up in my feed which I watched probably shortly after it was uploaded.
I like your content and the added humor! Quick tip for disassembly on Spyderco knives! Start disassembling the show side first and you won’t need two sets of bits!
If I ever decide to take it apart again, I’ll try that. It wasn’t enough of an inconvenience that I’d like to retry it just to test it out.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro yeah for sure! Just a heads up for in the future. Makes it easier!
I dd this some time ago and I must say...the results are satisfactory. It adds a real nice heft to the piece which just feels "right" in the hand.
Turns an ok knife into a completely acceptable knife IMO
I like the looks of the titanium scales a lot more than the previous ones. Looks clean and pretty, with improved ergonomics.
You're alive, Delta can't kill the dude! Good video dude!
Hey, you can hide money in those scales. It'll be safe because no one will be able to get to it.
“You could put your weed in there”
Dude, you pimped your favorite EDC, FOR FREE! Congrats. You've made it.
'You want to go jail or you want to go home"? I subscribed, you know your movies man and your knives!
Standard knife bro here. Always like your videos. The editing is cool. Would you ever consider reviewing any Emerson’s? I have 2 and I like them, quarks and all. The sheepdog and cqc7. Pricey for what they are made of etc, but they have a devout following. Keep rolling out the content man! Thanks.
I'm a lefty who typically pounds sand with pocket clips, however I found out that Flytanium will drill/tap holes in them for us! Time to shop!
Positive thinking. I enjoyed that one you slipped in.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who struggles with knife disassembly. Hope I can win the flytanium GAW...that will give me an excuse to buy myself an actual PM2. Nice Freudian slip regarding torx bits, btw
The first is the worst. I had never taken the knife apart before this. I thought about filming the 2nd or 3 times too- but didn’t have time and I thought the mistakes and lessons are more representative of people who are taking the knife apart the first time.
Bad Assery sir Straight up Bad Assery!!! The stickers I mean the Stickers are bad assery!
I got the same Jade scales and the ergonomics alone makes it 100% worth it. The way the grooves guide your thumb when deploying the knife is worth every dollar
Great video, easy tip for not wanting to use loctite, Teflon tape keeps the screws from loosening.
I have a pm2 that had plain Jane black g10 scales. I swapped them with green canvas micarta flag scales from RGT. I liked the pm2 before, but I love it now.
Loved the video man. You crack me up with every video.
I think this channel shines the most looking at the traditional folders. I believe the Douk Douk,Mercator ,Higonokami and Svord reviews are the most popular. How about looking at Italy for the next? Maybe not Antonini,if too bland, but there are hundred of folding knives designs there. Like the Santa Smacola Roman folding knife, the Drudenmesser from Sudtirol, the Resolza from Sardinia, the dozens made in Scarperia like the Maresciall,Zuava and so on.
The rockscale design scales improved my para 3’s centering. Makes it much better overall because it added some much needed weight too. And it looks cooler haha
Good to see you back!
I got a set from some company called “August engineering” and they were just plain slab milled out titanium. Stonewashed. Looks perfect
Bought my PM2 second hand with their carbon fiber scales and I love them.
Thanks for filming, abrikadoobie
A new AKB video!! i was getting worried the covid had got you!
I've literally been binge watching all your old videos.
I put the titanium crossfade scales on my bugout. Very nice improvement. I’m going to anodize them as well.
The first thing I do when I got a new paramilitary 2 is sanding down the tip of the blade with the same exact shape as the delica4 , it's alot stronger !
I just found your channel. I like your dry no bullshit delivery.
Will save you alot of time and easy to Do. Put a screw driver stalk in between the g10 and the liner slide it down to the laynark spacer and bingo. You don't break your g 10 and comes right off. Do both sides this way. Very easy
Would love platinum scales on mine
Nice to see the Para 2 can actually be improved upon!
I just ordered those natural jade g10 lotus g10 scales. They look different, and cool. Looking forward to putting them on.
I'm curious what clip and hardware you chose to go with it
Thanks for the insights on the Flytanium. Love your irreverant approach. Informative and entertaining.
my para 3 is one of the few knives ive owned to never fail. my 940-1 broke and benchmade customer service ground it down to a toothpick despite my request for no sharpening. spyderco really is a great company.... id like to see more compression lock dress knives from them. getting tired of putting bokers into rotation
Right on man thought I was
A anomaly, good to hear someone else feels that way........THANKS FOR SHARING.......
So first off. Great video. As always. Second off. For the love of God thank you. For showing an actually hardened bit set. It has been driving me nuts for literally years. I have seven bits. Collected from 11 kits. Only those seven are decent. PS. almost. No knife is too big. Almost. lol
I like your style. You gotcher self a new subscriber parter. Yeehaw!!!
Welcome aboard!
You should check out flashlights, I heard they are pretty cool too
Very nice bro, slick.
Here you are swapping out the Blurple ones and I want some 😂 great video as always
I wish you would make more content , I really enjoy your video's 👍
I enjoy your vids so much, thank you for the effort put in brother.😊👌👍
My Manix Maxamet is riveted together. Is hate too strong a word?
Gross!
there is a mistake in link for "My 10 favorite pocket knives" in video description.
Fixed it- thanks!
Hey man, new sub & I just wanted to say I love your content 👊🏼
The lanyard tube removal tool sold by Sharp Dressed Knives will reduce Spyderco disassembly cursing by approximately 19%.
You know you have a problem if you buy a tool to disassemble a certain knife
@@AdvancedKnifeBro That and the tool costs $25! Next time get a couple of small flat head screw drivers and slowly work around the plug on the inside by the liners. Piece of cake really. It takes maybe 20-30 seconds.Titanium lanyard plugs and tubes look better as well! Yes, I have done this a few times. Yes, I have a problem. I change all my pocket clips with LNW or MXG. Blades we love and RGT have some beautiful clips as well. Now if someone can make after market scales for Para 3 lightweight!
Don't need it just a screw driver or long metal stick. Put between g10 and the liner at pivot end slide it down to laynard tube and bingo. Comes right off with out breaking g10. Easiest way
@@AdvancedKnifeBro I regret nothing haha that tube SUCKS
The funny knife man make video : )
i had to drill out my hardware so swap out for titanium scales and hardware. luckily the pivot screws came out no problem lmao
"Can new scales improve my life?" is the real question.
And if so, if so. I I I I'm still alive.
Yes, yes they can.
Improved Knife = Improved Life
Love you Boo, always spreading the truth and nevah be trippin. Ttyl precious
For anyone who has ever modded a knife, this video is for you. The PM2 and PM3 aren't the worst, but they can certainly be a pain in the ass, especially if you have a stubborn lanyard hole. Wait, is stubborn lanyard hole a euphemism?
"You'll need two sex of tort.. you need two sex of tort.." haha!
Is it possible to sand down G10 so that it becomes smoother and less grabby when removing from the pocket (using a Lynch deep carry clip), or is that kind of dangerous given the dust fibers from that? Would it be simply better to get a smooth pair of scales and install them on the PM2?
I want a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 now! 😅
You are one sick dude and I Iove it. Great video keep up the good work. Oh yeah can you baton with the new scales? Lol.🍺
Well this is interesting...I was just wondering about this. Also for 3
Dear Advanced Knife Santa, Cna I please have a spyderco plaramilitarily for presents this year? I have been a good boy.
What is unnatural G-10? Micarta?
Nice, I keep thinking I should pick up a pm2, it’s a one day knife, still wanting you to do a balisong review, in part because they are not legal here si I can live vicariously through you.
10:07, ohh man, I'm a tip-downer. Isn't that default factory from Spyderco for PM2?
Those scales look real fly.
You’d think Spyderco, with all their money and “good” ideas, would learn how to make a knife that doesn’t have free spinning hardware and isn’t a total pain in the ass to take apart
A guy somewhere else in here said start with show side for one set of bits. Maybe that’s the key. I’ve taken apart and reassembled. Three times last month and won’t be doing it again for her foreseeable future.
Spyderco is overrated as heck.
none of my spyderco's have ever needed disassembled..... all my benchmades have been in for service....do I carry the benchmade more because it's a better knife or does the spydie last longer because it's carried less? either way benchmade customer service has made me angry
@D H $150-$200 is grail price for majority of people lol. It's a pocket knife. Anything above $200 is just paying for art and pocket jewelry.
@@jlkraus2 benchmade is pure crap I got 5 knives from them and with times I have learned to hate them all 😂🤣 now I only sticks with spyderco and cold steel ...
Is this the bead blast finish?
Yes, you can see the label at about 2:43
...how does it affect the Tallness?
I wanna make a documentary about knife nerds. So entertaining
Do it
Need some GEC scales for the para2 😂- killer vid my man - 🔥🔥👏👏💥💥🍻🍻
Great video..
Have you noticed any issues with the blurple para 2 taking more damage when using it for tougher jobs?
Should I buck up and buy the para 2 or keep avoiding buying one because I think other things are cooler
No lube and no Loctite? Shabazz would disown you! A windshield wiper removal tool works well for removing the lanyard tube.
I think we need a new Kukri review!!! Kukri's should be reviewed all the time.
When you changed the scales did you have to co with different length screws?
No. The original screws work.
Christ i enjoy your insane sarcasm lol. New Sub
Holy cow! Wtf! My head is spinning! Very informative!
Told ya it was coming soon!
@@AdvancedKnifeBro Thanks bro!
I think making the PM2 truly ambidextrous with a backlock model would make it better. Getting rid of that lanyard tunnel would be nice too.
Go check out the recent straight spine Stretch 2 in K390. It is unofficially a backlock PM2. There's also a VG10 straight spine version floating around out there.
@@bigaspaulo Thanks👍🏻
To me, the Para 3 is the greatest pocketknife ever made, but I totally thought the PM2 was til I got my Para 3s, (4, in 4 steels) and have three of them, including my favorite, the Blurple S110V one like yours. Unfortunately, I can’t carry ANY of them most days, since my everyday knife has to be in my watchpocket since a Leatherman Free P4 is usually in my main pocket. That means, unfortunately, I have to settle for a Benchmade Mini Bugout (satin blade, Flytanium classic brass scales, backspacer, and thumbstud). Good knife, but it’s no US Spydie, not by a damn sight.
Never had any problem taking apart a Spyderco (or any other knife, except the asspain reassembly phase of Benchmade Axis knives). I just touch the screws with a soldering iron for a few seconds to melt the Loctite, jam my thumb into the opposite screw, and spin the other one right out. I poke the lanyard tube out by simply placing the tube against a surface, and driving the scale off of it with my thumbs. I use the weakest Loctite (green? Can’t remember) for reassembly, it’s MORE than enough for the task.
The Lynch Spyderco clips are AWESOME, get one if you don’t already have one, they’re simply the greatest in history.
While I thought these may be decent the micarta ones I have are far more uncomfortable than the factory scales. With a few small tweaks they could be a nice set.
You talking about the lotus micarta?
@@AdvancedKnifeBro yes
Is it the texture or just the shape of the grip?
@Outpost 76 Your review on the micarta version was helpful for me, thanks! Glad to see you on here.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro its where it gets very thin by your pointer finger and the choil. The bottom milling feels like too much if a ledge up front too. The back half is pretty good. I'm not sure if the g10 is milled different but the titanium doesn't look to be as skinny or hard cornered as the micarta is.
Pretty fly for an advanced guy.
Love this
Those standard lanyard tubes can be a real pain in the a$$ to remove, that's why I typically replace them with a Flytanium tube when I have to disassemble one.
The first PM2 I did was super easy so was the second as was the third. The tool for the job for me was to take the tube out with needle nose pliers inserted into the tube wiggle a few times side to side falls right out. When reassembling just make sure to clean and remove any burrs from factory press fitting and they snap right into place with finger strength.
Are these lotus scales grippy?
They are a very smooth g10
Don't think for a minute I won't be hawking that IG feed for a shot at those scales. I've wanted to upgrade the scales on my Maxamet PM2 since I got it. I keep buying another knife instead though. 🤣
SCORE from Flytanium! Thanks for the video. Like-Like-Like.
"Yes, I read aloud all my messages as I type them on my phone, juuust like everyone else does. (It's an Android.)"
As an Android user, I also use an Android.
You don't actually need 2 sets of bits. You can just swap out one scale at a time as with most knives. Also makes maintaining the knife easier as well.
Yep. I actually did the video with one. And mentioned it’s much easier with two. Sorry not sure what you meant?
What scales are those g10 in jade?
The lotus g10 from flytanium
@@AdvancedKnifeBro they don’t have those in that color.
They may be out of stock right now. You might email them and see when they are coming back in stock
Ti looks good, but they don't tough the police 4 models one bit....grr
Damn businesslike professional and informative, like you had a sponsor or something. Not sure if I like that..............as much as the standard satirical Denis Leary of knife lore.
I did not have a sponsor. Sponsors pay for advertising or videos. I have been picking and choosing things ever since I’ve been doing this. Most things buy or are loaned and some are free things. My first knife video was a $7 free knife.
I hit like before it started...jussayin
Meh, for the additional cost, hassle and added weight, I think my stock blurple is just fine. Although it prolly won't get me as much Insta luv with EDC dorks.
Yes yes they can
WTF. TIL theres a socket on my wiha bit case.
Hell yeah!!!! #22aday
I bought a harnds from amazon based on steel, review and bearings knowing nothing about it.... Reminds me of WE and other chinese contract builts.... 14c28n, ceramic bearings and g10 for under $30. I'd enjoy review and some info on where they are coming from.
Not to knock what Flytanium is doing, I think it’s great! More options for the end consumer! But… put the purple scales back on your PM2, because it’s the best option! Great video and tutorial! Thanks!
I enjoy listening to you over shabazz and complex. Lol
I’ve found it easier to do one side at a time
Yes, best knife ever made, but only if it's tip down carry,,,,, big knives should always be tip down....
Sorry, did I mention that the tip should be down, ?
(opposite to up), !!
Great video, apart from the strange tip orientation advice.....
This non human gets it!
Never liked the looks of the PM2. Somehow with the titanium scales, it looses a little of the “bird look”. That makes it better for me. Maybe someday…
Thumbs up. Comment. Whew! I’m tired.
