  • This video is the first of a series of strategy videos for 1830: Railways & Robber Barons. It focuses on the initial auction and is useful for 18xx games that feature a waterfall style auction.

I'm glad to see the things I've been thinking about with waterfall auctions are being confirmed. My playgroup just pulls the rip-cord so they can yell "choo choo" while laying down tiles.
I think it's important to note, in a 4 player game, if all players are going to only bid 5 dollars per increment, at least 3 players should just about always be on the C&A, and honestly I'd be surprised that all 4 wouldn't get into the C&A in the most compeititve games. This means that C&A seems to need the "oddball" bid to limit the poison pill aspect of 4 player games.

The privates you buy will be sold by you to the railroad you own, perhaps after a round or two of negotiation with other players and you can sell it for up to twice its par value. If you get the Camden and Amboy "cheaply" you get a lot more money than the other players and can buy more stock or at better prices than they can.

Why not just start some privates with dummy bids to get them to a competitive price? (Or reduce the price of the B&O?)
18xx has enough barriers to entry without these conventions that could lose someone a four-hour game in the first five minutes if they don't "play right".

I think a lot of it is player count dependent. The privates are worth much closer to face value in 5/6p. It's almost impossible to lose the game in the auction, but it's definitely easy to be disadvantaged.

@@larryirons8746 definitely no need to apologize. The only person I've heard pronounce it like that grew up in NYC as well, so it's probably related.

SKOO-kill. Unless you're talking about the highway, in which case it's SURE-kill.

Can you explain the comment about needing $15 of revenue to avoid getting the B&O? You also talk about "playing the B&O seat" and I didn't really follow what you meant by that.

    • @therunbadcompaniesclub6026

Surely. The rule of thumb is that the player with the least private income has to fall on the B&O. In a four player game there's one player who must take the B&O. That means if each other player gets one of each: D&H, M&H, C&A, then the other player will end up with the B&O. The only way to guarantee to not have to take the B&O is to at least get the D&H, which is $15 in private revenue. If someone gets more than one of those, you might get by on less private revenue, while still not having the least. The seat you play is just vernacular stating the private (s) you won in the auction. They have huge implications on the game, so it provides information on the game you played to others. There will be more on this in later videos. Feel free to ask any other questions you might have.

The thing with someone "needing" to buy the B&O comes from what happens if everyone passes in the initial auction before all the privates are purchased. In this event, all privates that have been purchased pay out their listed revenue. The end result of this is that people with lower paying privates are immediately falling back due to the infusion of cash to other players. So the person with the least private income (or tied for least and later in priority after the SV was purchased) is strongly incentivized to purchase the B&O.

I think he means that if you only have the SV, then if everyone passes on the B&O, everyone will be getting more revenue than you.
