Mr Bremmer does a marvellous job of sane-washing. Well done Mr Bremmer. Of course Trump is not as Trumpy as Trump would have us believe - he is just so cleverly transacting for his best interests. The truth is, we know as much about Trump's intentions as Trump does and that will be a mix of Project 2025 and his standard shooting from the lip. But by filling the time on the post you have probably earned your appearance fee. Well done.
I agree with this 100%. What you said seems much closer to the reality - a reality that people who've worked for and with Trump have already described. Trump himself desires absolute authority, and the court has even helped enable that for him. If that's not *at bare minimum* a backsliding democracy then I don't know what is, and 1+1 no longer equals 2. I don't know what's up with this Ian character but I wonder if he's living in fear, and reframing reality into more "sanewashed" terms in order to stay under the radar, or to keep one door open for business with the incoming administration. If there's anything I can say with certainty, it's that the new regime is creating a strange cocktail of confusion and fear. It can be felt - and it can be observed in the behaviours of others - in what is said, what is not said, and how it is said.
I am afraid Ian Bremmer is a bit naive about bureaucracy. Within an institution, 40% will actively kiss the behind of the leader and do whatever is asked of the leadership. 50% will passively go along and at most complain behind the scenes, and only 10% will resist.
yes because Biden's war mongering and genociding was not a threat to democracy? You're right it was better before when we built walls and deported people, and didn't talk about it. Trump is no worse than any other president.
Previously I've thought Ian was a reasonable voice, but the way he acts like the US global order hasn't led us into crisis, is shocking. You are correct, Ian, fighting "wars all over the world" doesn't make us safe.
Ian Bremmer is always so informative on the whole Eurasia Group inside material. Thank him so much for helping us defuse our present situation with Trump.
"its".... he may be a little overly optimistic, but it may not be such a bad thing. He definitely is more knowledgeable than me and everything he said is at least somewhat reasonable. Let's focus on keeping Trump in check while also being optimistic that we can do so.
I agree- not a great choice. But the other candidate sucked worse. Perhaps one day the US can return to a systems and an expectation that the average voter need not pick the least worst option.

"It's the end of the world (justice) as we know it!" I'm not wasting my life sitting in a courtroom any more.
'Heading to the law of the jungle,' Trump inherits a sound economic base when much of the rest of the world does not. However, like it or not, we live in a world inextricably linked to a global supply chain. Seeking to seriously disrupt that is full of inherent dangers for everyone.
"Sound economic base'?....$36 trillion in debt, a shriveled-up manufacturing sector, and the top 10-15% in America owning a greater share of everything than at anytime since the Gilded Age.
Yes, our wars do not benefit us and free trade. Just sets up an international economic government that helps multinational corporations. That is subversive of democracy
Sad display of flowing with the prevailing wind. Normalizing the new president is not the good thing to do, but he does it anyway. Ian voted for T-rump the first time. Maybe he did all three.
I don’t take consolation from the notion that the judiciary will protect ordinary Americans from Trump (eg Cannon) or that the state election systems will keep the US a functioning democracy, given the judiciary supported gross gerrymandering
“We should push the Chinese to …” Just how F arrogant can you get? How about “engaging” with other nations? American may be the most powerful bully at the moment, but every thug is hated and is eventually toppled and there will be an awful lot of cheering around the world when that happens.
Same as first time round, he comes in when economy, unemployment, stocks are all on the up which he and his groupies will say are all him and not because of Obama or Biden.

I agree. Overstated! We have never embraced any government or their ideals of "democracy". It has always been an ongoing conversation, which means it changes. Is refined, is redefined, is affirmed and rejected..as great countries are inclined to do.

"Russia's war in Ukraine." Most people know almost NOTHING about Russia's history with Ukraine and how they told the US and all others for YEARS that Nato in Ukraine was a "red line." But we did not take that seriously enough or ask WHY?
The concept of a Russian world order and the implications of a BRICS currency on a global scale are complex and multifaceted topics. The BRICS nations, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, have been seeking to establish a more multipolar world order, with a greater emphasis on cooperation and mutual benefit among emerging economies 1. One of the key objectives of the BRICS bloc is to reduce its reliance on the US dollar and promote the use of local currencies in international trade 2. This has led to discussions about the possibility of establishing a BRICS currency, which could potentially challenge the dominance of the US dollar in global trade 3. However, the creation of a BRICS currency would require significant political and economic compromises among the member states, including the establishment of a banking union, a fiscal union, and macroeconomic convergence 2. Despite these challenges, a united BRICS currency could boost trade and global influence among the member states, while also reducing their reliance on the US dollar 3. The BRICS economies already account for a significant share of global gross domestic product, with an estimated 37.3% based on purchasing power parity 4. China alone is a major driver of global economic growth, and its economic influence is likely to continue to grow in the coming years 4. A stronger BRICS+ could have a significant global impact in various areas, including energy, trade networks, infrastructure, monetary policy, and technology 5. The establishment of a BRICS currency could also contribute to a more diversified and stable global financial system, reducing the risks associated with a single dominant currency 6. However, the use of local currencies in international trade is still limited, and the US dollar remains the dominant currency in global commodity trade 8. To overcome this challenge, the BRICS nations would need to develop a more robust and integrated financial system, with a strong and stable currency that can compete with the US dollar 9. In the aftermath of the 2009 Yekaterinburg summit, the BRIC nations announced the need for a new global reserve currency, which would have to be "diverse, stable, and predictable" 10. While the idea of a BRICS currency is still in its infancy, it has the potential to contribute to a more multipolar world order, with a greater emphasis on cooperation and mutual benefit among emerging economies 1. Information is missing on the specific details of the proposed BRICS currency, including its design, implementation, and potential impact on global trade and finance. Further research and analysis are needed to fully understand the implications of a BRICS currency on a global scale. Since the 2nd world war comes to an end of capitalization perhaps books that explore the concept of a post-capitalist society. Here are a few notable ones: "Das Kapital" by Karl Marx: While not directly about the end of capitalization, this book is a foundational critique of capitalism and explores the idea of a socialist or communist alternative. "The End of History and the Last Man" by Francis Fukuyama: This book doesn't specifically argue for the end of capitalization but explores the idea that liberal democracy and free-market capitalism might be the final form of human government, marking the end of history as we know it. "PostCapitalism: A Guide to Our Future" by Paul Mason: Mason argues that the current form of capitalism is coming to an end due to technological advancements and offers a vision of a post-capitalist future. "The Zero Marginal Cost Society" by Jeremy Rifkin: Rifkin explores how the Internet of things and other technological changes could lead to a nearly free economy, potentially undermining traditional capitalist structures. "Utopia for Realists: And How We Can Get There" by Rutger Bregman: While not exclusively focused on the end of capitalization, Bregman discusses various utopian ideas, including a universal basic income, which could significantly alter how we think about work and wealth. "Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist" by Kate Raworth: Raworth challenges traditional economic thinking, including aspects of capitalism, and proposes a new model that prioritizes human well-being and environmental sustainability. These books offer a range of perspectives on the future of capitalism and potential alternatives. They're a good starting point for anyone interested in exploring these ideas further.

If they had voted NO... then there'd be no criminal indictments. Indeed, if Trump would NOT have committed the crimes, there'd be no evidence for a Grand Jury. The sad part is that the MAGA SCOTUS now gave Trump immunity to commit ANY CRIME HE WANTS as long as Trump claims, "it was during my official duties." That puts Trump above the law and above the Constitution. It is the antithesis of what America is and what the Founders wrote in the Constitution.
Justice delayed is justice denied. Trump has learned one thing. He can get away with anything, and laws do not apply to him. Congratulations USA, once again you fail.

Here are a few notable ones:
"Das Kapital" by Karl Marx: While not directly about the end of capitalization, this book is a foundational critique of capitalism and explores the idea of a socialist or communist alternative.
Read Jeremy Rifkin's book when it first came out. Fascinating. Great comment. Nice to read a comment that actually adds to the discusion. Thanks.
