- O Sweet Woods - John Dowland
The Second Booke of Songs or Ayres, no. 10
Angela Hicks and Penelope Appleyard, sopranos
Sam Brown, lute
Filmed live in Castle Howard, Yorkshire.
O sweet woods the delight of solitarinesse,
O how much do I love your solitarinesse.
From fames desire, from loves delight retir'd,
In these sad groves an Hermits life I led,
And those flase pleasures which once I admir'd,
With sad remembrance of my fall, I dread.
To birds to trees, to earth, impart I this,
For shee less secret, and as senceless is.
O sweet woods...
Experience which repentance only brings,
Doth bid mee now my hart from love estrange,
Love is disdained when it doth looke at Kings,
And love loe placed, base and apt to change:
The power doth take from him his liberty,
His want of worth makes him in cradell die.
O sweet woods...
You men that give false worship unto Love,
And seke that which you never shall obtaine,
The endlesse worke of Sisisphus you procure,
Whose end is this, to know you strive in vaine,
Hope and desire which now your Idols bee,
You needs must loose and feele dispaire with mee.
O sweet woods, etc.
O how much, etc.
You woods in you the fairest Nimphs have walked,
Nimphs at whose sight all harts did yeeld to Love.
You woods in whom deere lovers oft have talked,
How doe you now a place of mourning prove,
Wansted my Mistres saith this is the doome,
Thou art loves Childbed, Nursery, and Tombe.
O sweet woods...
I have been learning classical singing for a year now. Recently we had a death in the family and I stopped singing for about 2 months. However listening to you has taken me to another plane and encouraged me to start singing again. Thank you.
Leo, we are so touched, thank you for sharing. Sorry to hear of your tragedy 🥀
Ánimo! Las penas se van cantando...
Words cannot express properly how beautiful this performance is. Thank you 🙏
I am completely overwhelmed by the beauty of the ladies, the music and the beautiful Michael Lowe renaissance lute as well. This video is the definition of perfection!
Очень красиво во всех отношениях... Чудесное, утешающее пение❤ Спаси, Господь!
Subtle, etherial, refined and...in the spirit of the best of the magical English Renaissance
You represent the very best of what it is to be human! So thankful. (Penelope, it is good to see and hear you again--I last saw you singing Handel, and enjoyed your solo very much.)
Well, that's a new Dowland to me. Beautifully rendered.
HEAVENLY MUSIC ❤ ABOVE THE PASSAGE OF TIME ❤❤❤
Это можно слушать бесконечно. Спасибо. Какое владение голосом---великолепно.
This music and the voices are from another sphere, beauty in its pure essence. Thank you!
Sublime in every detail.
De la très belle musique avec simplement deux charmantes chanteuses .Le génie , c'est aussi dans la sobriété.Merci pour le partage.La langue anglaise à la renaissance savait être aussi mélodique que rythmique.
Wonderful voices !

Superbe et pur. Bravo
Lovely music and pretty ladies
I applaud you
Una pena que no pongan la traducción al español de lo que cantan estas bellas voces, para nosotros los tontitos Latinos.
Por qué "tontitos"?
Superb. The lute volume might have been a little higher.
Me parece el adecuado...
Not many comments mention the wonderful lute. Maybe as a guitarist who loves lute generally, I’m more prone to hear it.
Lyrics
O sweet woods! The delight of solitariness!
O how much do I love your solitariness!
From Fame's desire, from Love’s delight retired,
In these sad groves an hermit’s life I lead:
And those false pleasures, which I once admired,
With sad remembrance of my fall, I dread.
To birds, to trees, to earth, impart I this;
For she less secret, and as senseless is.
O sweet woods! the delight of solitariness!
O how much do I love your solitariness!
Experience which repentance only brings,
Doth bid me, now, my heart from Love estrange!
Love is disdained when it doth look at Kings;
And Love low placèd base and apt to change.
There Power doth take from him his liberty,
Here Want of Worth makes him in cradle die.
O sweet woods! the delight of solitariness!
O how much do I love your solitariness!
You men that give false worship unto Love,
And seek that which you never shall obtain;
The endless work of Sisyphus you prove,
Whose end is this, to know you strive in vain.
Hope and Desire, which now your idols be,
You needs must lose, and feel Despair with me.
O sweet woods! the delight of solitariness!
O how much do I love your solitariness!
You woods, in you the faires
Thank you
