Finally someone said it. If you have an iphone get an airtag, if you have a galaxy phone get a smarttag and for everyone else get a tile

Makes sense to me. Airtag work with IOS so if you just have an iPad, it should work just as good.

@@markjoehn8528 In fact, AirTags work with all Apple devices as long as there is the FindMy app. However, if you want to pair an AirTag (activate to use it after u buy it), then you need and iPhone with the FindMy (or ios).
For iPhone 11 or above, due to the presence of the U1 Chip, it can help find AirTags BETTER with Precision Finding (which you can follow the arrows and find your tag precisely). Other iphone works but you can only see the approximate location on the map and play a sound to locate it. Hope this helps :)

Most big TH-camrs are from USA and as u know that Apple dominates the 🇺🇸 market so other brands outside the 🇺🇸 don’t get a fair chance to compete are u can see only big Channels on TH-cam review Apple products and it seems like there’s nothing wrong with Apple product and there’s a lot of limitations in them…
My point is in most 🇺🇸 eyes Apple can do no wrong and they are painting this mentality across the world which is wrong

I’ve used tile and I never found it useful. My friend put it on her sons book bag and his book bag was never found via tile..got it 2 days later via someone who looked inside and saw the name of the school and returned there. Thanks for a great video Daniel.
Tile is pretty bad
I tried tile for my keys b/c I was loose them. Had one time they were in my pocket but didn't realize it. Used the tile app and the sound was so bad I couldn't figure out they were in my pocket!
Yeah, I joined the Tile community trying to be a nice guy, helping people find their lost things. It drained my battery like crazy so I had to turn it off. I guess iPhones and Galaxies are advanced enough to not drain the battery so bad (and forcing their users to participate in their "community" makes their coverage better).
Ordered Airtags but also have a smart tag that I got with my samsung phone. Smart tag also has the ability to turn on your home lights or anything you need it to which is pretty cool. My smart tag is with my car keys so when I come home I long press the smart tag and it turns on my living room lights.

As expected, he kinda blind when it comes to competition in other stuffs than phones like smartwatch, tablet and even laptop. Hence why I don't always rely on his reviews because his perspective can be very narrowed as he's reviewing very selective devices (or more like mostly Apple devices) and I hate that 😕

Personally I like the fact that Tile has the different versions depending on what you are using it for. I have the mate on my keys and the slim in my wallet. Tile is also working with a variety of company's for built in trackers with certain skullcandy headphones and one fitbit tracker.
Yes I have a pair of Skullcandy headphones and they are tile enabled so I never misplace an earbud

Yeah for me this was 100% why I went with the Tile. The Wallet tile is nice and slim, mate has an actual hole for your keys.
I am amazed that Apple has failed to evolve the airtag into a real competitive product.
It is great that Tile comes in several form factors. That's part of why I bought six of them.
It sucks that none of those form factors actually works worth a darn.
Skullcandy? Is that really a selling point ? Last I checked those were trash, could care less.
Either MKBHD forgot the existence of Samsung's Smart tags which came 4 months earlier or he's just a Samsung hater.
Kudos to ZONEofTECH for the non bias comparison unlike some American TH-camrs.
MKBHD loves apple to the point where he starts to ignore the competition as if it didn't exist.
He talked a lot about airtags huge network and how it's very important, so I'm curious to see how he reacts when he knows that smart tag has a wider network.

@Agwali That depends on where you live. In Europe and most parts of the world Samsung has a wider network of Galaxy phones but in North America it's Apple because that's where they're from. But TH-camrs like generalizing whatever happens in the US.
He is. Look at his videos. It hasn't been too long that OnePlus made a watch right? He already made a video on that. What about Galaxy Watches? They've existed for years yet he didn't make a single video. He barely made a video about Galaxy Buds+ just because of that so many people wanted a review. Galaxy Tabs? No. Galaxy Books? No. Anything else? Yes.

Totally agree this was one of the best comparisons I have seen
But it only compared networks, not actual bluetooth range in the field between the tracker and your phone. For instance, I go up to the mountains a lot and with howling winds or other noises I need a loud device with a the best range assuming my phone is the only device that can reach the tracker. If my tracker is in the car or a cabin 600 feet away or under a bush, which will I find and hear more clearly?
Wasn't expecting the smartag to work this well, thought it would be last because airtag is well known and tile was the big thing before apple introduced airtag. The fact that it worked better than an airtag with UWB kinda says a lot about how widespread Galaxy phones really are. It looks a bit bulky though
Apple has the "for the lay masses" thing. Which really, makes it the worst out of any product for any use.
Probably the only country in the world where iPhone ownership at 57%, is larger than Samsung or Android phone ownership is the US. The global average of Android devices is currently at around 70% so I would have been more surprised that a test conducted in the UK showed Ithe Air Tag to be better. It does depend on the user base of both devices as to how many times it gets pinged.
I have owned phones from both camps and while I prefer my Samsung phones I have to say the best phone I have ever had for pulling in a weak signal was my original Iphone, It worked in places no Nokia or Motorolla or Blackberry (yes I am that old) would even show a single par of signal.

Anyone that’s into tech or uses their phone professionally has an iPhone. I wouldn’t say iPhone is for the laymen out there. Everyone I know that has an iPhone has a reason and people that just use their phone to talk and text and use social media has an android.
The UWB doesn’t help general location tracking. It’s only useful when you’re ~10 feet away.
This is an absolutely fantastic review. Well conducted and put together. I was worried about the network of users with Samsung, but it looks like it holds its own just fine against Apple.
The smarttag+ from samsung is what I'm waiting for.

not really, pls read more carefully about "plus" version - it is actually a failed product, it over consumes battery, and UWB doesn't work as expected

The airtag is affected mostly by the number of apple devices in the area so it will work better in areas where apple has a higher market share. In the US apple and samsung are almost half and half smartphone market share. Also the devices have to be on ios 14.5 so in a few weeks as more people update their iphones it should be easier to find.

I have two SmartTags and love it. I wish I had more SmartThings devices to use with them tho. I love that I can track it with either my phone or my tablet.

I used a tile mate to track a package sent via mail from California to Europe. Worked great the entire way. I was surprised to see how long my package sat in Queens, NY, and then the speed at which it moved around Europe once it hit London.
How do you track a cross the world what app did I use life 360 or the tile app map or did I use a subscription on the tile to get the tracking around the world
I modified my Samsung Tag to fit into my wallet. I spread out the battery and speaker, I used conformal coating on the PCB, button still works. I used enamel coated wire for the battery. As a version 1 I had to solder wire on a thin magnet to get connection. I got batteries with tabs on them on the way as a replacement.

Great video, Daniel. So much good info here. I think it is down to personal preference. However, I would not recommend tile to anyone. I had 2 tile pros in the past few years and they both broke. They are just not durable at all. I’ll say it too, if you have an iphone, get an airtag. If you have a samsung, get a samsung smart tag.

Really great review HOWEVER would have appreciated you leading with the fact that they can only be used with specific devices.
Ok, I have to point out something. The best tag is the one that works best for what you intend to use it for. Consider that most people will be using these to locate their phone, keys, or wallet / bag. These are items that are typically going to be "lost" in persons home, vehicle, or workplace. In cases where you already know the general vicinity, the form factor and volume will be the most important aspects of the tracker. In this scenario the Tile would probably win. The credit card tile is extremely thin, and the pro is very loud and also very thin. So the ability to call a phone from your keys or wallet, or vice versa is going to be a lot more useful for a lot of people.

Definitely. I only ever lose my keys and wallet in my house so I don’t need to track them. Tile does what I need plus IF I need to, it can track them.

I bought a 4-pack of AirTags, but I won’t get them until sometime in June. I did do the engraving, which takes some additional time, I think. I will track my keys and luggage when I travel. I like your comparisons and I already own Tike trackers. One time I left my key on top of my car and drove away and lost the key. To find it with the tile tracker I had to retrace my steps and have my own phone detect the tile basically. I like the larger network of Apple and Samsung. I am an Apple phone owner so I pretty much just went with Apple for that reason.

A nice trick with the AirTag, take clear packing tape put it over the silver part rub it down firmly into the edges and then carefully trim around it with a razor blade. You can’t even tell it’s there and there are no scratches.
That's called Redneck Lamination. I used that on my Social Security Card.
(They say to not laminate it, but nobody's had an issue with mine for 40 years, so there. 😜)

Never talked about the type of materials that might block or degrade signal tracking. Will a thin sheet of metal like aluminum or steel kill the signal tracking?

This was very helpful. My parents are going to Europe next month, and being from Toronto, right now our airport is notorious for being the worst in the world. From insanely long line ups, to lost luggage. Was gonna buy one of these to put in their luggage in case they get lost. Looks like I will end up with the Samsung smart tag.

Something I've been looking into getting recently and this review seems to be the best and most honest review I've seen so far. I've a Samsung phone and considering the Samsung tag scored better on all tests I'll be looking into getting a Samsung tag.

One thing I’ve been curious to know and the most relevant to me was battery life. You didn’t seem to cover it though.
Samsung had about 6 months, and AirTags came in at around 12 months. The more frequent ping from the Samsung, appears to come at a great cost of battery life.

Very helpful video. Thanks. I have the Samsung smart tag for about a year now and never really needed to use it as it's attached to my car keys, which I've never lost. Also, have it programmed to my outdoor light, so tap it to turn on the light when I arrive home in the evening

Very good video. I have a Samsung phone so I'll be getting some Smart Tags +. I saw a video on how to disable/remove the speaker on an Air Tag. Is the Smart Tag similar. I'm mounting it on a device that I don't want the 'bad' guys to find it.
Are you talking about just the speaker or disable it all together?
You don't have to play a sound if you don't want to. Playing the sound is only if the item is near you somewhere and you still don't see it, so you play the sound. But if my lost item is miles away from me, it makes no sense to play a sound. I'd first get right near it and then if I can't find it, I'd play the sound.
@@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403No, I think he’s talking about the thieves which physically open up the AirTag, and remove the part which allows the tracker to notify a sound.
@@antimono @DontBanMeBroDontBanMe! I think you both got it wrong. AirTags play a sound if it detects an unknown iphone in its close proximity (for a period of time). Its idea is to prevent stalking people with an AirTag placed on their person. The problem is, that this feature also enables thieves to find AirTags hidden away in e.g. a hidden pocket in your backpack and remove/destroy them. There are tutorials how to remove the speaker, so it can't ring.

Thanks for a great review! I use a Galaxy phone and originally had SmartTags. They were attached to various items in both of my houses and garages All of them indicated locations up to 200" away. I purchased some open-box, 2020 Tile Pros for $15 ea. and they were all spot-on. Also purchased some 2022 Tile Pro's, open box for $15 ea. and will see how they work. I may try the new SmartTag2 but no more of the older SmartTags. They just didn't work well for me.

2 things…
1. The “check-in” as you put it by the devices is much more frequently than shown. What you show is the Apps display updates.
2. You can manually refresh the locations in Apple’s Find My app but unfortunately you have to *kill* the app and reopen it to force the refresh.
I got a SmartTag free when I bought my wife her S21+ back in January and I love it. I managed to find two SmartTag+'s on B&H yesterday and they should be here tomorrow, so maybe I'll make a video about it. I do have a 21 Pro too, but I don't see myself getting an AirTag at this point.

It's amazing how much tile lacked any kind of innovation since they had such a huge lead on this market
Eh…Tile didn’t have the financial means mega-corps like Apple and Samsung did. They also waited years after Tile brought the idea to the market and improved on it. Also, do either Apple’s or Samsung’s products allow the device to ring your phone? I don’t believe so

@@johnrperry5897 thanks John. This is where Apple frustrates me and likely so many others. They could have had that functionality in the initial AirTag release. Kudos to Samsung for doing so in theirs. But yeah, for that reason alone I got my family a set of Tile trackers over AirTags. Since my family doesn’t have Samsung devices, I think that ruled out the Samsung option.

I was curious why there was no test for tracking directly, with your phone. For example putting on one these on your keys or wallet and needing to find the object in your home/work? I'd love to see the differences in range for that feature.

still useless IMO. Most have opted out of the sidewalk BS and you require a subscription when the other options here do not.
Tile need to have the app running in the background. The Galaxy tag or Airtag don't need this.
I'm pretty sure that Apple and Samsung do this to but because it's embedded into their system it won't show up as because it's not a dedicated app running.

I think the galaxy smart tab MIGHT work on any Android. You can download Samsung's SmartThings app from the play store, and Samsung trackers are in there.
Can you please check if this actually works? I don't have a smart tag but I might get one if it does
It does work on all android devices, just samsung devices have a bit more features.
We checked this and it says 'not supported' in SmartThings on a non-Galaxy device, with no option to go into its settings or interact with it. As far as we found it wasn't usable outside of Galaxy devices, and with all Samsung marketing saying 'Galaxy' and not 'Android' it's not looking good for anyone outside of Samsung. So 90 percent sure it won't work on any android 😔

Great video D, any idea if there’s a distance limit on the air tag or any of the others. Like if I put 1 in my car and it gets stolen.
Yes there is a distance limit, if it goes out of range ur screwed
If your stolen car drives by and pings someone with an iPhone even on the other side of the planet, you will be notified.

Now I don't feel bad about Tile eventually going out of business. They brought it upon themselves. Even without taking the ecosystem into account Tile is the worst.

It's sad that only Tile makes this slim (EC-card sized) tracker. I really hope Apple or Samsung make this form factor aswell.
Yeah if only it worked. My wife lost her 1 week old slim in her wallet and it does not update. Total junk. I got a call from someone who found it and plan to return this junk when I pick it up.
Review the T-Mobile tracker also. They have their own. With LTE connectivity.

Have several of the tiles (normal and pro) , like them. But have been looking at the Samsung's.
Tile is only good if you lose something in your house. Even then, it doesn't have location finding like Apple and Samsung have. If you lose something at an airport or something like that, unless someone walks by with the tile app and it's also running in the background, it won't ping the network.
* If you have an iPhone, get the airtag
* If you have a Samsung, get their tracker
If you have no other choice, get the tile, but recognize if you lose your keys at a bar, good luck!
AirTags with their NFC chip can act as a trigger for Siri Shortcuts for the owners phone and still keep its tracking capabilities and would be interesting to know how Apple’s AirTag app for other phones functions too
It doesn't work at all.
Yeah, you can identify a lost airtag on phones with the right chip. But it’s clunky at best. And you can’t actually setup and use airtag on a non-iphone.

I'm a big fan of Tile. I've been using them for years and many of their form factors. They certainly aren't perfect but they usually get the job done. The tracking tests makes sense though. While Tile has a sizeable network, it obviously doesn't compare to the amount of Samsung and iPhone out there. A few things that were missed regarding Tiles subscription thigh was that they do give you battery replacements, lost item reimbursement, replacements if damaged or defects, and let's you share so items can be tracked by others; So it does provide some value. This was a great review.
All of this!! That’s why I still mostly use Tile. Also no matter what phone I get, Tile works with it and gets the job done.

Great video, I was lost when it came to these but you've helped me In deciding which one to go with as I use both apple and Samsung and wanted one of these to track my sons new bike 👍🏻
I love how you brushed over the fact that you can install SmartThings on other Android devices not just Samsung you can just download the APK and the bass settings files import them
On my android I can install SmartThings no problem, but the app forces me to update and the updated SmartThings won't connect to my SmartTag and gives the dialog that I need a Galaxy phone. Do you have a workaround?
iOS devices have to upgrade to 14.5 to have nearby find enable, probably why it didn’t ping as frequently

@@domantisbinkis4738 Because if you’ve seen graphs on how ios users update their phones thru an apple announcement, a lot update their phones relatively quickly due to the fact that red notification is in the settings and won’t go away until updated

I started purchasing Tile when they first came out. They were one of the only options. I live in a rural area with around 1 bar signal. I have a Tile slime which is fairly new. And it's sitting in my wallet 2 feet away and it cant find it. It can find my other tiles nearby. The sound isn't too loud when inside a jacket or backpack. It's super faint.
The app is suspicious. It does make you pay to have simple functionality.
I'm going with Samsung since I'm android. Thanks for the video. ✌
