Why Sleep Matters

  • Many of us burn the candle at both ends, as we stay up late into the night to study, work or have fun. But going without adequate sleep carries short- and long-term health consequences. In this seminar, Harvard Medical School sleep experts illuminate the importance of getting a good night’s rest and demystify how much sleep is needed and why it’s so vital to keep our bodies at their best during every hour of the day.

    • @nedhill1242

Each state determines daylight savings time. It’s not a national law. There are two states that do not participate. Arizona and I forget the other one. I think it might be Indiana. All you need to do is start a petition drive in your state. Get enough signatures and you can get a proposition vote at the next general election.

@@jackhammer1021 so then there are three states. Actually I think a Y doesn’t really count because they’re in their own time zone several hours away. This only matters in the continental United States. When you’re as far away as Hawaii it doesn’t affect business in the continental United States because you know you’ve got a big time difference. But when you conduct business and you’re dealing with different time zones it makes a huge difference. In the lower 48 a.k.a. the continental United States I think it’s just Arizona and Indiana.
No one cares about Hawaii and Alaska. They don’t factor into much daily business activity for the average person. Nor the average business.

When I was a kid, I didn't like sleeping at all and just liked to stay up all day playing. But all of that has changed since I was about 14 15 years old. Since then, I have realized that sleep is very important, if I don't get enough sleep, I will not be able to stay awake to do anything, and I will always be tired. Now I love sleeping but because of work, I rarely get a good night's sleep

I just had this conversation with my therapist today. As the second speaker said, I am fat, stupid, sick and unhappy. Literally. I was thinking about suicide last night, like many other nights. And my therapist quoted Jeff the Killer when he ended our session, he said, "Go to sleep." It's 2:40 am... and I am feeling sicker and lonelier than ever. So I just organized my time and I will do my best to go to sleep at 11 to wake up at 6. I just hope it's not too late.

Your routine can vary, but doing this every day will let your mind and body know it's time to fall asleep. It also helps to listen to some soothing music *HINT* *HINT* *WINK* WINK*.

On a certain level, we have sleep in our brain, the neurochemicals that show up in flow: so dopamine, norepinephrine, anandamide, endorphins, and serotonin. If you were to try to cocktail the street drug version of that, right, you're trying to blend like heroin and speed and coke and acid and weed- and point is, you can't do it. It turns out the brain can cocktail all of 'em at once, which is why people will prefer flow to almost any experience on Earth. It's our favorite experience. It's the most addictive experience on Earth. Why? 'Cause it cocktails five or six of the largest pleasure drugs the brain can produce. We're all capable of so much more than we know. That is a commonality across the board. And one of the big reasons is we're all hardwired for flow, and flow is a massive amplification of what's possible for ourselves.

In order to sleep, it has to be fun to sleep. So, if we are being creative in making things fun by using the theory of suggestion, a talk with the divine, massage various parts of the bodies while breathing deeply, drinking water to lower the temperature, etc.., then sleeping would be easy. In short, the body has to be cool, and we have to breathe deeply to bring more oxygen the cells, then we would just sleep. If it still does not work, then try to massage every parts of the body while breathing deeply, so the muscles could be relaxed. We have to tell ourselves that we would deal with things the next day, and if it is beyond our control, then let God do the worry while we sleep.)

32 years of Insomnia Sufferer here. I am a Insomniac. Not by choice here. I absolutely hate it. I always pray for sleep I have never not slept because of thinking on things . Or worrying about things. No. Absolutely Honest to God. I don't do that. I just don't. Sleep. Or rarely get sleep. Sleep is literally everything. It's vital. Our lives depend on it.

I would suggest making changes in diet. Some foods can actually induce sleep. And I know for me personally I have to make sure I'm getting enough exercise mentally as well as physically everyday or it's impossible for me to fall asleep. My biggest problem is just self discipline!! If I could just get myself to lay down, I always go straight to sleep. Just never wanna go to bed.

Being a lifelong napper I have perked up to listen to any intelligent info about that. I'm encouraged to hear that naps are helpful with cognitive&memory issues. Don't remember the specialty but no doubt naps do not supply opportunity for some critical functions that cannot be caught up on with more sleep any time soon. Interesting topic. Enjoyed muchly.

The great resignation is an opportunity to balance workplace environments. It’s never pointed to and wasn’t covered in this lecture, but workplaces can be toxic and contribute to sleep issues.
Lean philosophy imo has been a major contributor to workplace stress.
Covid has given people time to think. And they may get it right by negotiation for better employer employee relations.

Suggestion that a key part of the need for sleep is the body's need to make serotonin, which it does in a symbiotic relationship with gut bacteria in the large intestine.
We sleep to first produce serotonin, then to draw it into the body through the extraction of water in the large intestine.
Though it can be synthesized, there seems to be a major difference in the health benefits from the micro made serotonin, and the artificially made serotonin.
Here's some notes on both how important serotonin is and how widespread it is in all living things.
Besides mammals, serotonin is found in all bilateral animals including worms and insects,[19] as well as in fungi and in plants.[20] Serotonin's presence in insect venoms and plant spines serves to cause pain, which is a side-effect of serotonin injection.[21][22] Serotonin is produced by pathogenic amoebae, and its effect in the human gut is diarrhea.[23] Its widespread presence in many seeds and fruits may serve to stimulate the digestive tract into expelling the seeds.[24]
Gut bacteria manufacture about 95 percent of the body's supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity.

    Best medicine for insomnia.
Put on ANY Kevin Costner movie. Sit comfortably or lie in bed. They are so slow and lengthy and boring you will be snoozing in no time at all.
My favourite is “ Message in a Bottle”
It takes you to REM sleep in a flash. You won’t even be aware of all the long Tyrsome facial close ups of Kevin. Or even the lengthy periods without dialogue.

I am 65 and have been living in Spain for just over a year now. I am curious as to why the speakers have not touched on the subject of siestas. Have they conducted any research on the pros and cons of effectively having twice as many days in a year. Albeit half days. Most animals nap at random times during the day so surely this must be hugely beneficial to humans as well.
