Those penguins, gannets, sharks, dolphins and whales have been feeding on these massive sardine schools for thousands of years.. in the case of the sharks (and likely the ancestors of at least some of the others) millions of years. Ever since nutrient-rich temperate waters provided these aggregations of 'bait-fish', many organisms have taken full advantage, often gorging themselves on calories that would otherwise be fewer and far between in the vast ocean.
None of these animals looked to me to be starving, considering how fit and healthy they must be to hunt so vigorously. If anything, this is a rare example of an Earth ecosystem largely intact .. a sort of marine 'Serengeti.' That is, it appears as such. Changes in fauna numbers/behavior and human-induced disturbances are less visible to us, and there is no doubt that we are having massive impacts through fishing and pollution in the marine biome.
This kind of sight once had terrestrial counterparts - on every continent, with 'Serengetis' full of diverse species large animals (mammalian, avian, crocodilian and other reptilian-alike.) These collapsed amidst the colonization and settlement of the planet by our Pleistocene ancestors, the most drastic extinctions likely due to understandably hungry, opportunistic people just trying to survive. Let us hope technology and rational beliefs & politics can provide the safety net for the rest of the Earth's life.. including us.
