  • Join me as I get to see a rare glimpse of Anne the Elephant outside her enclosure at Longleat Safari Park.
Anne came to Longleat as a rescue elephant, having spent her entire life in a circus. This makes her very special with a unique set of needs. In spring 2015 Longleat moved Anne to a luxurious new 994m² purpose-built home that provides her with 24 hour access to her outside space. It has lovely deep sand floors, sky light panels and an automated feeding system.
Anne also enjoys specialist care from a dedicated team of keepers - they have even built her an enrichment game called Ketrunk. Anne loves her new house so much she often chooses to be inside rather than enjoying her grass paddock and pool. But fingers crossed you’ll get lucky and get a glimpse of her; however, no-one can guarantee this which is why this sighting is so very special.

Wow! What a delightful surprise to see a video pop up on a Monday morning! Good way to start the week!
Anne is very precious. I hope she has a friend there, as elephants are social creatures, and kind of need to be in a herd, or at least with one other elephant, or so I've heard.
I'm also thinking about that river there. I don't know how far Anne is from the river, or how deep the river is, or whether it would even be safe for her to be in the river, but elephants love to be in the water, and slopping around in mud, too.
Anyway, I hope she is happy and healthy.
    Thanks for sharing, Steve!

Hi Gwen so glad it was a nice surprise for you and a good start to your week. Anne is the only elephant at the park, they thought about getting her a friend however because she has a purpose built house, if for some reason she didn’t get on with that elephant they would have to divide the house in two which would make her home slightly smaller for her. I believe Anne was rescued from a circus in Germany about 11 years ago where she was badly beaten and treated. She is quite old now, in her 60s and has really bad arthritis. Technically she is retired and Longleat built her this special home to live in. She dictates where she goes at all times which is why it is very rare to see her outside especially if it’s cold because of her medical condition. Anne is not near a river, but she has a specially created pond, that gives her specialised access into the water if she chooses to go in, again to support her with her medical condition. I know that Longleat will always do the best for Anne, the keepers love her and she is well looked after. The fact that they spent so much money building a purpose built house for her to retire in says a lot in itself. It’s not about the money. Anne is well-known by the locals and loved and it’s always special when you catch a glimpse of her and that she can please herself in whatever she does. She does have some small friends that share her enclosure which are 3 goats I believe who she often keeps in check. Anne also enjoys specialist care from a dedicated team of keepers around the clock. Thanks again for watching and glad you enjoyed meeting Anne.
