  • This World Elephant Day, we're sharing details of an important project we're taking part in to help conserve and protect Asian elephants.
As you may know, Longleat is home to Anne, who is the oldest Asian elephant on record in Europe and is thought to be one of the five eldest elephants in the world. Anne was rescued from the circus over a decade ago and has seen marked improvements in her mobility and health since she first arrived at Longleat thanks to the dedication of her keepers and her osteopath, Tony Nevin.
Earlier this year, Tony and the team flew out to Thailand to share the osteopathy techniques they use with Anne in a series of practical workshops for people who work with and care for elephants internationally. These techniques may seem simple for smaller animals or humans, but take on enormous significance and complexity with these ginormous animals. Over the course of the workshop, Tony and our keepers were able to improve the posture and gait of a number of rescued elephants, and were able to pass on these methods to their peers.
If you would like to do your part to conserve these incredible animals, we'd love your help. We're proud to be joining forces with BIAZA and the World Elephant Day Foundation to help secure better outcomes for elephants across the world, and we're calling on you to write to your MP to ask the government to support the conservation of elephants and promote high-welfare conditions for elephants in human care in other countries.
