Now because of you, I am going to get the Suzuki diagnostic kit to check how I did and to make sure everything is good according to break in instructions. I bought a 2019 15hp this year for my 14ft tin and it's hits rev limiter before 3/4 throttle. I plan to go up to an 11 pitch prop to hopefully correct this. My buddy was passing me with his old 9.9 and that kinda pissed me off. So I am getting the prop and probably the 20hp ECM soon. Seems weird that the engine overheated just by cranking it over. Doesn't the water impeller still pump while the engine is cranking? I think I might get this diag kit too cause my 15 doesn't idle as nice as yours that's for sure. Mine shakes like crazy at idle but purrs as soon as I get off idle. Thanks for the vids on these Motors.
Does overheat easy with no water running.. it had been running for 30 minutes already hot and doesnt pee water while cranking not enough speed .. if the engine was cold start would have been fine. What prop pitch you have now?
CDNWizard did you try triming the motor different positions? a hydrofoil will help you take off faster.. it wont leap wasting power upwards... it will shoot straight..
@@laingej yeah I've tried all different trim positions. I hope that I'm heading in the right direction. The boat is honestly so light I can pick it up and portage with it by myself very easily. It's is rated for a 15 hp max. I've had two buddies in the boat with me and a bunch of gear and that was the only time I could open it up without hitting the limiter. I figure a prop is only around $100 Canadian so I will try that. I'm also planning on adding a little weight to the boat with a casting deck and storage up front. I solo fish mostly and my two young ones come out every so often.

Does your diagnostic give you any information regarding AWG cable requirements for moving the battery 17 feet away from the motor ? It looks like 8 AWG cable coming out of my motor itself, but I'm not even sure on that. Then I would want a large enough cable to defeat any resistance on the 17 foot electrical run. Mine is the 2020 15 with electris start and power tilt. And your vids are great !
No theres no info on that .. you can calculate it yourself there a formula by lenght and amps so you retain the needed amperage yes you gotta go a little bit thicker.. but this little motors will cracks fine with 110 cca even thou recomended is 325 cca

Did you ever do The fuel comparison to see if the 9.9 ECU delivered the same fuel as the 20 ECU when running it with the 20 hp flame arrester? I saw you did it up to 2500 rmp in nuetral and the results were the same. Did you ever test this on the water in gear?
I noticed the contacts they use are marked OBD2. Is it possible to connect an ordinary cheap OBD2 reader or OBD2 gauge as you can in a car and see live data from the engine? NEMA2000 kits to your GPS display or Suzukis multi function gauges are very expensive.
The motor was already hot running before.. then the fuel line came disconnected without me knowing..i kept cranking and cranking it.. spinning dry wasnt picking up water. Was just enough to store a code but wasnt major overheating
@@laingej my suzuki 6hp cranks up by pulling a rope, but it pees every time you pull. Also,i remember your engine didn't connect to ECU when the engine was off , although it was connected to a battery.
@@boatsandoutboards9070 i see. mine needs more speed to pickup water doesnt pee cranking nor pulling the cord.. takes a good second after start to see it peeing..The battery is just for the starter motor it doesnt power the ecu.

What value does this diagnostic software have if it will only work with the engine running? If my engine won’t start this won’t help me to find out why.Right?
You can .. you need a 12v battery and power the Positive white wire coming out of the rectifier .. it disconnects and ground the engine block. Then it powers the ecu and you can connect the diagnostic program..i will make a video

Did you have any issues downloading and installing the software? I just managed to install the drivers and program after messing with it for a couple of hours. But the program won't start with or without the USB cable plugged in. Does it have to be initially connected to the motor with it running for the computer to recognize and initialize the program or am I doing something wrong?
I got a slightly newer version that just has a box with two cables coming out of it, one the USB you hook up to computer and the other with the 4-pin connector you hook up to outboard port (which actually only has 3 out of the 4 pins, although the seller says that's how it's supposed to be)..
Did you change the usb port settings? You have to go in our computer and change the usb port to COM1 for it to work. Mine came with instructions and after installing all thats the one step you gotta do. Connect the adapter to usb the go to setting look for videos here changing usb port to com1
@@laingej Yes I did. I was able to get it working shortly after. Thanks for your response. I found out mine only had 30hrs, despite being a 2014 model, so I'm pretty happy with it!! I also found no faults or error codes, other than 1 instance of a low oil pressure fault. Just need to get ready for and do the timing belt replacement and I should be good to go!!
I know. But since it doesnt have ignition switch..the ecm is dead but there is a way.. you can power the ecu with a 12v battery . Pin 13 power and pin 14 ground. It works i tried

I have a 2017 Suzuki 9.9 same motor though it looks like. I just put the 20hp ECU on mine looking forward to taking it for a test run today.

@@laingej it's the factory 9 pitch on it now. The boat is too light and it basically leaps out of the water when I take off.

Some of the actuation functions require that the engine not be running. How do you get power to the ecm if the motor is not running?
