  • Dustin Poirier speaks with ESPN MMA’s Ariel Helwani about how he’s feeling after his 5-round battle vs. Dan Hooker at #UFCVegas4. “The Diamond” says he loved fighting in an empty arena and would be fine doing that the rest of his career.       We would be lucky if there were more fighters like him. Past few years I never count him out. He's the only guy I don't totally count out against Khabib.
      He is an incredible representation of the sport...up there with Nunes, DC, and Stipe.

      Interim Champion is a world Champion. He beat a sitting World Champ to earn the belt too. So in all senses of the word champion he was a champion.

      Why are so many people in this thread morons? Interim champ is NOT the same as undisputed champ. It’s effectively a glorified number 1 contender. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still an achievement, but Poirier wasn’t THE lightweight champion.

    When Dustin lost to Khabib, he said “when times are good be grateful, when times are tough be graceful” (or something very similar). I never forgot that; I think of that quote any time I’m dealing with stress.

      My prediction is that Gaetjhe gets the win over Khabib and then Poirier beats Gaetjhe again. Khabib isn’t training at his usual gym plus his father is ill and I feel like this could negatively affect his performance against Gaetjhe. Gaetjhe is Khabibs toughest opponent yet, stylistically, and is coming into this fight super confident after that win against Ferguson.

    I like Poirier and its good to hear some honesty on how he felt at the end of the 2nd round and how he felt after the fight. Most fighters these days are like 'nah they didn't hurt me, I feel great'

    Literally the most genuine and at least from public interview records, a nice, person overall. Definitely wish him well on his future fights and career. Like Tyson said, fighting is not a tough man sport, it's a thinking man's game.

      All main event fighter's should be getting a million minimum!
      A class act , a true warrior, a top lightweight, and a genuine guy, deserves a heck of a lot more ..
      With companies like Reebok and ESPN funding the UFC, this million is a small percentage of total revenue.
      18% is fighter pay. That includes USADA costs.. so basically fighter pay is a joke ..

      KennethPlays everyone in the ufc should be making atleast 40k & 40k. Bottom card prelims. If there was a fighters union, that would be happening as a minimum payment. You should be able to fight 3 times a year as a ufc fighter and make atleast 100k after taxes, training camp payments, coaching payments, etc etc.

    Poirier isn't my favorite fighter. I was rooting for Khabib, McGregor, Gaethje and the Korean Zombie when they fought but man I really hope Poirier wins the title one day. He deserves it more than anyone imo.

    i used this as a comment to someone but decided to chare with all, Dustin is definitely one of the greatest fighters just for his record, the opponents he's faced, his weight class, and the era of his weight class with all the best of the best fighting at the same time in that weight class. any of the top 10 in the light weight division in this era are one of the greatest fighters of all time for mma. prove me wrong.

    Great interview. That conversation at 2:44 is going to be heartbreaking in hindsight if he deals with any significant CTE later in his life. Poirier is one of the greats.
