  • Hi meet Shady Shae the who started the "German Humour/ Satire/ Brutal Satire Reactions trend.
How the German Brutal Satire reactions started - My friends in London always say Germans have no humour so they wondered why I check out German content and frequent Germany on holidays so I decided to check out German comedy and was introduced to German satire by my followers.
I was so confused by the Satires, didn't know if I should laugh or what because of the intensity and seriousness of the issues being presented. The brutal nature of the truth being presented "pop and plain, straight in your face with a bit of humour" made me coin the phrase "German Brutal Satire".
    Surprisingly other youtubers followed suit!

Sad enough, he stopped doing it. - Don't know the reason for sure, but overall he explained all these things for decades and people just NEVER learned.
He was well aware of that and also said this in his program. That people just come to him, laugh, then go back and do the same shit again.
One 'joke' right at start of his program was, that when some day there is a revolution, they will show the entry cards to his program "Look! I was in the resistence! I laughed about the system!"

@@miriamweller812 Yes, I remember myself getting a cold shiver and a glimpse of insight when I realized he was telling people the truth but they perceived it just as entertainment. I believe this is the real reason why he gave up political cabaret. It just seemed futile to him. Why make comedy if nothing ever changes?
If I remember correctly he once commented about his retirement from political comedy that reality has overtaken him - like he can't transform actual crazy developments fast enough as they occur because the speed of changes keeps rapidly increasing...

It's hard to follow his train of thoughts when you're not fluent in german history and politics. Heck, it's hard even if you are. You'll probably need half a day, and a second person explaining all the hidden twists and political background to get most of the 1 hour show. It's worth it though. In a nutshell it boils down to "Don't believe the simple answers. Check your facts, and most of all, never believe your country is ethically better than any other".

My parents had once been at one of this shows. My mother said ever so often the laughter of the audience didn't left their throats because the background was too scary. Another time they had to think about one of "jokes" for so long that he had been two states further. And my parents, at this time, were very interested in politics.

You need to know a lot of the political background to understand the humor of Volker Pispers. He is taking all the known parts of history and forms the picture of reality. He is telling history - the bad on good. And by choosing the right words he adds the humoristic glasses, bearts, big eyes etc. to the painting, to show the grotesque. Humor is when you laugh nevertheless.
And his humor is pure brain and heart - no balls at all.

I was at some of Volker Pispers' performances back then. The atmosphere in the hall was always the same. Volker relentlessly hits you in the face with reality. And just when you're laughing at his jokes about other countries and you're shaking your head at how other people can be so stupid, he holds the mirror up to your face with the next sentence. That's why there was never really any loud laughter. Because as soon as the mood got too boisterous, the next punch came and the subliminal question:" Why are you laughing at all?". In the end, however, Volker Pispers had to capitulate to the stupidity and inertia of humanity. The man could say what he wanted, we all nodded, laughed and carried on as usual.... That is true tragedy

Volker Pispers is a legend. Brutal honest. Never held back. He paused in 2016. Last year he announced that he won't return on stage, because some of his statements about viruses and conspiracies have been misinterpreted by certain people. He clearly distanced himself from these people several times and ultimately gave up. All of the points on US foreign policy are spot on. However, he was always very lenient when it came to Russian foreign policy. Theme Afghanistan or Chechnya. Or again currently Ukraine. They aren't any better.

Yes, the USA influenced certain things, like Pispers said. Bt at the end Hussein, Bin Laden and all the others that were on the US side at one point had always the free will to do what they want. These people take shows like this and explain to you how the US and NATO are the reason for the war in the Ukraine, as if Putin had no free will or Russia had never done secret operations.

And that still wouldn't be the case. Firstly, modern history lessons are supposed to be about the critical examination of history from the side of the students, not monologues about the viewpoints of the teacher. And a lot of the topics or adjacent ones are part of the curriculum and standard even in many text books, but it still doesn't work since the intrinsic interest in learning and understanding grows smaller and smaller. All to often you hear "oh I don't have to remember that, I have Google". Many students have bought into the societal view that school has the primary function of giving them the grades based on which they later on get to pick a job. And grades is the main driving point to learn. If it isn't important for the next class test it isn't important to know. And if it was important for the last class test many already forgot it.

First of all, thank you for introducing me to Volker Piepers. I hadn’t heard of him before. I think this clip is brilliant. So cheers!
This clip seems to shock you. You were looking forward to some comedy, some witty roasting of GB,… and got a shocking history lesson. You also said that he had balls of steel.
This history of US politics is not new to us in general. Although I did learn some aspects that were new to me. And that people criticise US foreign policy is not new or uncommon either. So there was no shock value for me.
However, the way he presents this events, how he condenses history to the bare bones and unmasks geopolitics is brilliantly exposing and entertaining in one. That is why people go to/ watch shows like this. It’s sharp, witty and funny. And it makes you think.
I know, people say, that Germans have no humour.
Considering the long history of political Kabarett in Germany, the form of comedy I prefer, I say:
    We have humour- smart humour.
P.S. Honecker was the Head of State of the GDR (East Germany), where ,as you probably know, Merkel grew up.

Especially there is one "sketch" by Urban Priol and Dieter Hildebrandt about the lifes of doctors who followed the Nazi beliefs after WW2 was over. Very interesting and delivered in a smart funny way. In terms of Georg Schramm I can recommend for example his sketch "Warum nicht!" which is a motivational speech while making fun of motivational speeches at the same time.

As someone who grew up with Volker Pispers, he‘s my benchmark for good satire/kabarett.
The heute show is often pretty „nice“ in their jokes, Pispers is really hard, direct and honest. The translation of this is pretty good, but I think that a lot gets lost in translation, sadly.
The piece you are watching is from 2004 I think, so back then Merkel wasn’t as big as she is today and a lot of the references seem to be really dated today. I think the last DVD of his stage program bis neulich was published 2014 and they recorded his last performance in 2016 as an audio, but i am not sure if there are translated versions of those out there.
Also a lot of his references are best understood with knowledge of german politics ( e.g. Edmund Stoiber is a member if the CSU ( christian-social-union, the bavarian version of the CDU, very right, very conservative, very traditionalist) and he attempted to become chancellor, but failed. and because of his closeness to the catholic church ( which is kinda mandatory if you wanna be someone in the CSU) he is comparing him to Khomeini).
Also Schröder in todays context is a close friend of Putin and is threatend to be kicked out of the SPD because he is not willing to stop working for Gazprom. As chancellor he also demolished our social system and played a major role for Hartz4 and the fact that the german retirement system is nothing but a joke these days. what a legacy.
From what I researched about history, the things he says are factual, but what makes it so special is the way he contextualises everything.
Interesting in that regard is that i think it was 2013 when they published so far classified documents that show that the CIA and MI6 combined forces to get ridd of the democratically elected prime minister of Iran Mosaddegh after he kicked out the british oil company that was highly benefitting from selling Iranian oil while a lot of the population was starving ( post WWII the US and the british divided up the middle east and who would get what oil, not even really considering that its not fucking theirs to take 🤦🏻‍♀️ but I digress). After they got ridd of Mosaddegh, they installed the Shah that Pispers talks about. I think there is a translated version of a piece by Die Anstalt who explained it too, so once you recovered from Pispers you might wanna check that out.
But all in all one can say, middle eastern history is full of colonial fuck ups that led to the mess that it is today.

Volker Pispers is in retirement now. He was a former teacher, then he became one of the best German cabaret artist for nearly 4 decades. His cabaret program was never really changed in all these years. He was trying to teach the German audience in German Politics and American foreign policy, "in a funny way". His program was always grounded on the Truth of history books and newspaper articles. A law in Germany allows artists to freely practice their art form without being sued for it. Since Volker Pispers only referred to publicly available books and newspaper articles anyway, he could never be sued for his cabaret program.
Unfortunately, he was so successful that hardly any Germans ever questioned the deep background of his program themselves. And the Germans have not understood that the contents Volker Piepers reported on are all sad truth. There is a lot of USA propaganda in the German mainstream media, all Germans grow up with it as a matter of course. In Germany the Americans are always the good ones, of course still today.
Watch as much of Volker Pispers as you can, there is and never was a better caberatist who made jokes about the German politicians and the USA Presidents, like him.

Volker Pispers "resigned" in 2016, announcing he would make a long break from cabaret. "Honestly", he said, "I don't know how long it will actually be". However in 2021 he confirmed that now, when it's been 5 years since beginning his break, he would not return to the stage again.
In my opinion he was definetly and by far the best german politcal cabaret artist, being not only the wittiest but also the most eloquent political satirist. He started as a school teacher but changed careers. His ability to narrate history and connect it to political reasoning is brilliant, thus connecting the dots which form the bigger picture.
I am confident to say that I am not the only person in Germany who misses his voice in the political theatre desperately. I for sure wished, he weould change his mind and come around to comment on the daily politics again.
If you were more of an observant person you might have noticed that towards the end of his career he seemed to get more and more aggravated, angry. As if he couldn't bear the fact that satire does not change the realities of life anymore. You should definetly watch his programm about capitalism (if you can get one with english subtitles), which was basically the last major programm change / expansion he did.

    • @Fiat_Lux_23
      @Fiat_Lux_23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'd subscribe to everything you've said, and like to add - yes, he grew notably more cynical towards the end, and I suspect that's why he stopped performing entirely. He often mentioned in his act how he's making cabaret against basically the same things for 20+ years and even went so far to satirize the fact itself by calling his ever-changing stage routine "Bis neulich..." (roughly: "See you yesterday...") for about a decade. So it's a fair assumption he just became increasingly frustrated and exhausted by the futility of his efforts so at some point, he just quit the stage because he either felt he had nothing valuable to add anymore, or people wouldn't learn or listen anyway. Pains me to say but I'm afraid that in the end, the last bitter punchline is he lost his humor.

Can't tell you how often I thought he should return to the stage ever since. In my not so humble opinion his always witty and sarcastic remarks to the political life in Germany and the world are really really missed. I actually think his acts formed the opinions of quite a lot of people on the left and sometimes gave them a more concerted voice. No doubt he influenced my political opinion very much and I am not ashamed to admit that he motivated me to be as well informed as possible about political topics, before making statements about them. @@Fiat_Lux_23 Geht klar.

That's the magic of Volker Pispers.
He's firing shots while spitting facts in a way, nobody else can, while teaching about the mechanics behind economy and wars. You'll have much fun with the later parts. That guy is a pure genius and we kinda lost a great voice, when he decided to retire from performing on stage, because he makes it look so easy. Everybody can follow his words, even if you're not into this topics, and everybody is understanding it, because of his funny and kinda 'simple' style of explaining.

      In additon:
This on stage performance is about 20 yrs old, when Schröder still was our chancellor, before Merkel was elected. He talks about Merkel as a dictator, but not in the same way the right movement in Germany, Nazis and conspiracy theorists do. His words sometimes get abused by them and he distanced himself from those movements, that became kinda powerful in the last 10 yrs, especially since Corona began.

cons! you are offically red pilled now. Pispers has been a savage - and he did his job with all his heart. we can all only guess why he had to end his career... when you see his shows, you don't need a diploma to come to a conclusion. yeah, sometimes he wasn't accurate (e.g. US citizens aren't dumber than everyone else - he generalized too much) - but all in all he was to the point.

Intelligence is to a fairly large degree the availability of thinking tools (and how well you can use them). If you have acquired fewer than someone of equal "innate" intelligence, then you are less intelligent - and the education system in the USA is quite a bit worse on average in that regard, so how are US Americans _not_ dumber on average than many others in "the West" (let alone Japan...)?

      France 98, Hungary 98, Italy 97, Latvia 97, Spain 97, Poland 97, Russia 96, Croatia 95, Ukraine 95, Portugal 95, Ukraine 95, Ireland 94, Belarus 93, Gerorgia 92, Greece 92, Bulgaria 91, Turkey 89, Serbia 89
Compared to Singaporeans or Hong Konger Germans are dump as f*ck (both have an average of 108).

He assumes a lot of background knowledge about the political events in the world, but illuminates them and questions what really happened. Even in German, it is difficult for some to follow all his little allusions and comparisons with other personalities, but it is worth it if you make the effort.
Many people leave the auditorium after his performances thinking, damn, that was hard stuff, sometimes you had to laugh, but sometimes the laughter gets stuck in your throat and the AHA moment sets in. Shit man, the guy is right and reveals some things or shows with the finger on the point, what really happened, far from any propaganda. And there is no country and no government on earth that does not get their punishing blow.

I think the reason why people might say you're speaking too fast is that they're not used to your accent. Advanced English speakers wouldn't have trouble following you, but for some who have not heard this accent before, it can be a bit difficult, I guess.
Also, it's quite funny that Schröder is listed as gas-lobbyist. Most Germans would probably remember him as former German chancellor, even though nowadays he is indeed just a lobbyist for Gazprom.
And Bavarians do like to stress that they're Bavarians rather than Germans. That is kind of true. I like to compare Bavaria to Texas in the US, also because the population is generally quite conservative compared to the rest of the country.
