@Joe Kill The exposition is not boring, you discover the world through Alita's eyes and because she is so emotive and full of wonder, most people can empathise with her journey and appreciate the stunning world you explore with her.
The plot of Alita Battle Angel isn't about her remembering her past, becoming Motorball champion or going to Tiphares to face Nova. Its about her first crush/failed relationship, and subverting the born sexy yesterday trope by growing from the child surrogate for Ido and becoming someone who stands on her own. And, that DOES reach it's conclusion. The main plot is focused around Alita's personal and emotional growth and the action only exists as an obstacle or a means to those ends. The biggest mistake the movie made was not ending on the giant pipe where Hugo died. The final scene with Alita as the Motorball Champion only exists to set up a sequel and should have been left as a post-credit scene. Also, Karate Planet is just the motivation for a side-character of the sequel series, not even one of the more interesting characters. I know it was a joke, but if you wanted to rip on Alita you could have chose something more relevant, like how every plot arc is just a rip off of a different 80's or 90's Hollywood blockbuster (Rollerball, Mad Max, Apocalypse Now, etc).

Is nobody gonna make a "Tim Burtons Big Eyes" joke since Christoph Waltz played a guy whose wife painted people with big eyes in that and in this movie plays a guy creates a person with huge eyes?
Got to whole hearteningly disagree that it was all set up. There was a central theme of naive hope and growth, leading to realistic disappointment at the climax. Alita develops as a character by the end of the film, no longer being that naive child but also not exactly who she used to be, she’s a new person that developed through the films conflicts. Hugo and Chiren also encompassed the same theme of hope and disappointment from willing to do anything to achieve their goals which lead to their deaths. Not saying the movie is a masterpiece but as a fan of Battle Angel Alita and having watched the anime film and read all of its manga as a young teen (then again as an adult), I was very pleased with the film.
Them doing a German accent for an entire minute @ 09:42-10:42 is adorable. I'm not familiar with the source material, but I did enjoy the movie. Based solely on side-by-side clips available on TH-cam, the adaptation seemed faithful. I thought the love story was a bit forced though. I can understand Dan's "setup" fixation. That's my two cents anyway. Cheers!
@@eyesofthefox Is Christoph Waltz not German? My bad. I couldn't tell both accents apart. The only Austrian I know with a thick accent is Arnie and I couldn't undertsand a word he says. Cheers!

Gunnm (kinda pronounced gunem), the original Japanese title is two kanji, the first being the kanji for "gun" and the second being the kanji for "dream" so technically it's "Gun Dream". Also, the original manga is like 9 graphic novels, of which still not everything is explained. Currently there are a couple of new series related to the moon and mars stories of the Gunnm world respectively. Also, Edge of Tomorrow was based on a Japanese light novel, not a manga.
BTTF, in my opinion, is one of the best screenplays ever because it's filled with clever tricks like this. The whole "clock tower" third act is set up right away by a random woman asking for donations! You have NO IDEA when you see that scene that it's important exposition. Genius.
best manga adaptation is still old boy 2003 ,but alita was fine...but they rly missed an opportunity to cut in something from airborne , the real 90s skater movie ..btw do airborne
edge of tomorrow is not an adaptation of the manga or the graphic novel. they have some things in common. time travel. people that wear power armor. but even that isnt really the same. tenuous at best.
Holywood just doesn't get the cultural undertones that run through those mangas/animes and make them into uninspired cliches. The whole "becoming an adult" thing the round jokes about was a major theme of the manga, the creepy relationship between Alita and the Doctor was emphaziesed and her breaking from those social constraints.
First of all, don't worry about any movie complaints impacting the source material. They were almost 100% character based with very limited long term storytelling. And for all my questions with the plot, I really like how they adapted the characters to the film. Except for Nova of course, it's hard to make an impulsive lunatic scientist a big long term planning bad guy without really changing his character up. Maybe Crazy Nova could appear if the Secret of Zalem comes into play, assuming they can write around the body part scene.
i LOVED this movie. definitely one of the best live action adaptations of a manga/anime. i also loved the Bleach adaptation on Netflix. i think this is for a niche audience though so i dont really expect everyone to get it. i found the story pretty good , it was an introduction. we DO need an origin story. comparing to Spiderman whose had a TON of origin movies to Alita is not fair.
Naming Alita after his daughter is better than the story in the manga where she was named after his cat. I also say the movie is basically the first 4 volumes of the series and two of the volumes where just moterball so the movie actually toned that down a lot. My friend had complained about the romance subplot being way to fast. (I feel the same. I'm more whatever about it) but that love story is only one volume of the manga. So, I actually think the movie did a half-decent job with the pacing.
Now I want an entire hour of the panel explaining in their Christoph Waltz voices that the age of consent laws are very different in Japan and how Bitcoin is the future
"the hammer" looks cool and iconic - and is not to be taken away from the movie, despite being totally unrealistic - because ti "feels" real, and what I mean with "feel" is that it looks not controllable, *heavy* and stiff as a real object, in a tactile way. that always separated good animation from bad cheap one, and in 2019 - with cgi-heavy blockbusters and glamourous shots - it does a big difference in the ability to "grab" the viewer. that's why that rocket sticks in our memory more than the rollerball or whatever.
if alita wasn't all set up and ground work for the next movies in sequence we would have gotten another avatar the last air bender or worse dragon ball. D: this is the inherent flaw in making a long series into a movie.
HellMinion88 agree. If they need to end the story in purpose, then they must change a lot from the manga original story. Then it becomes another ghost in the shell or dragon ball z.
I don't have problems with exposition and the way Alita handled it. I really liked it. A movie that would just do stuff without explanation would be bad in my eyes. Yes I like exposition I like to know more about the universe it plays. And you telling me exposition is a bad thing won't change that. Also leaving out origin stories for Franchises that was never on screen before ? Bringing spiderman in as counter examplebthat had already 4 origin stories? Ah common I also have to say wrong on not resolving any plot lines. It resolved everything except the Nova plot and Alitas journey as a whole. But this commentary highlights why critics and audiences will rarely if ever find a common ground. You people should look more on a movie through the lense of the general audience who has not seen every trope a million times.
Couldn’t you have found anyone who liked the movie to join the panel? Seriously, everyone I know who watched this movie loved it. Bring some balance. I enjoy these because I like listening to people of differing opinions talking about it, but this just seems like three people who hated a film complaining about it for 45 minutes.
Had to stop already at 0:49 and didn't continue when the discussion starts with "a lot of Motorball for a movie about an android from Mars". I've had enough of that bs. It really pisses me off. It's an adaption of a comic book _series_ - a *series* of comic books. How and why people expect a conclusion to every single storyline, yet also don't stop bitching about if a movie actually delivers that, is f-ing beyond me. Do you even know what you want? Nobody EVER criticized a Batman movie, or any other movie adaption of anything, for not going into detail about EVERY character and not bringing EVERY storyline to an end in _only one_ movie. It's set up with sequels in mind, because _it needs_ sequels to be even just remotely capable of telling Alita's story. This was meant to be the *first* movie, the *beginning* of a saga. Would anyone criticize Lord of the Rings for not telling the audience _everything_ in the first movie? Would anyone criticize Star Wars for that? I think not. So why the hell are people having a problem with it in Alita? I just do not get it. You suck. Butthurt fanboy, out.
@@seni9644 Yeah, considering how much material there really is, it maybe would have made more sense, if the movie format would actually be the problem. But it's more like people aren't used to not being spoon-fed every detail in one go anymore, like a disease caused by too much binge watching or something.
This felt like very shallow commentary. None of you had read the original material, you all have pretty similar opinions... It could have been useful to bring in a fan of Alita who has read the manga and liked the movie to provide some counterpoints and make the commentary more interesting. The Honest Trailer itself was good, though.
I think Yuri on Ice could make a really good live-action movie. You'd probably have to make it a Netflix/Prime original as I don't believe there's enough of a market for gay ice skater romance on the big screen but otherwise, the only issue would be finding professional figure skaters who can either act or be close enough stunt doubles to the actors.
I thought Alita the character was portrayed very well; I actually liked her and wanted her to succeed. The whole movie is flawed, but has heart, and very awesome action. The only thing I really HATED was the arrogance of the filmmakers ending the movie all but assured a sequel would come. Alita > The Lion King remake
The first LOTR movie was absolutely a "setup" film for the next two installments. That being said, for me, the real problem w/ Alita is that there are entire scenes (which the honest trailer alludes to) that I would cut away due to being unnecessary, let alone some of the exposition dialogue. LOTR, on the other, doesn't possess a single scene that I feel ought to be cut.
Joe hit it with the Desperado ref. There really are no lies told in this movie, direct questions & answers only and spontaneous confessions. No tension basically.
Excuse me! Alita has a structure and a character arc. I went in to the movie blind, no idea about the source material or that it was a set up or anything. It introduced Alita and the world wonderfully, a beautiful film I saw many times.
This movie actually reminds me a lot of Blade. It ends on setting up sequels, it’s equal parts good and bad, and it’s actually the first genuinely good Anime adaptation that can pave the way to better future adaptations just like Blade did with Marvel. It’s the spark that lit the fire that can burn the Anime curse down.
Who cares....? Maybe in a weird fanboy rage way it might matter but why does it matter when they discuss the story? A person can understand what makes a good script and story without knowing what a cyborg is? I mean seriously.... them using the wrong term doesnt erase their very valid criticisms of this films structure and script
@@corvus2512 As a sci-fi fan and especially a cyberpunk fan I know how important it is to be able to distinguish between man and machine. Especially with Japanese source material there often are ethical and philosophical questions deeply rooted into the story. It might not be as in your face as "Ghost in the Shell", but Alita deals extensively with the theme of transhumanism. Often blurring the line between human and machine to a point where you are left asking yourself "Is that person still human? Still a living being?". That's why I have a hard time to take them seriously when people have problems with the still very clear and basic difference between a robot and a cyborg. P.S.: If I went into fanboy rage mode, I would start ranting about this movie not having the balls to aim for the much needed R rating (tho I do understand why and am surprised with what they got away with). Or how Rodriguez fucked it up by introducing motorball and Desty Nova way to early. Or how Jashugan is supposed to be black or at least has a dark skin color. Or how they replaced Gonzu with a black nurse. The rest of the script was pretty much perfectly adapted with intelligent changes to the source material. There are only very few debatable changes overall. In the end I'm just happy that after waiting almost 20 years I got a pretty faithful adaptation that even surpasses the anime and has perfectly captured the character of Alita.
@@corvus2512 no, it doesn't erase thier validity, but it does make it harder to take them seriously. That's like some one saying Legolas is a Man or Gimli is a Hobbit when reviewing the Lord of the Rings. Sure, the person might make a really good review or whatever, but it's those little details that leaves it harder for the audience to take them seriously. But yet again, who cares? Pre-release of this movie, there wasn't a whole lot of westerns caring on about the new manga for Alita- Mars Chronicles. Also, China sales were better than USA from my understanding.
Yeah I was shocked by how much I loved this movie. Still don't get the whole "it's all setup" argument Alita and her father both have very clear character arcs that end with purpose. The only thing that argument holds water with is like the last 45 seconds of the film when it sequel baits. Which sure, kinda lame. But does it bother people if an aftercrdits sequel bait? End of the day to each their own, but yeah I really dug this film
I mean if this gets to be a franchise you can look at any first film and complain it's all setup. Every part 1 of any franchise leaves off with a lead into part 2.
Dude. That guy Dan Murrell was shieting on the movie from the get go. I mean how much more f...ing character development and arch you want in a 2 hour movie ?? As a fan of the manga I think this live-action adaptation is better than the anime adaptation!
Please explain why the "Toy Story" ending (are you sequel baiting )?
Saw it twice and in rpx. Fucking amazing. Sequel baiting happens all the time. I always find it funny how some movies get free passes when they do it and others don't.
@@christopheredwards5337 because they are good movies with sequel bait and you know that the sequel is really coming and in production. Alita well we don't even know. And even with that how Dan says, many good movies with sequel bait have a good script and wrap-up plot.
@@MauricioPlaza Alita's script is full of iconic lines and it wraps up Alita's character arc nicely. For me the ending is cathartic and satisfying and leaves you wanting more.
"Toy Story" I think because her first body is like a porcelain doll?
They did have a complete story... and then they just kept going into two more endings.
Cyborg: Alita and you don't tell her what to do and don't push her buttons.
Robot: ATM, you tell it what to do and push its buttons.
Cheers!
Austrian*
@@eyesofthefox Is Christoph Waltz not German? My bad. I couldn't tell both accents apart. The only Austrian I know with a thick accent is Arnie and I couldn't undertsand a word he says. Cheers!
I really don't understand the hate! Are people really have an opinion that far from mine or they just like to hate things in general? Because i think it might not be perfect but Alita: Battle Angel is the most entertaining, lovable, and enjoyable movie i've ever seen! And it's not forgettable at all, it affected me in a lot of ways and i love it!
I absolutely love the film..
And for the record they went Arnold not waltz
Aren't they both Austrian
@@21pilotstillidie58 Yes they are.
Spencer actually did a good job at first but the others really did sound more like Arnold, especially Lon.
@@GermanLeftist i mean i know not all Austrian people sound the same. To me it sounded like an Austrian accent. It might be you are hearing Arnold because he so famously speaks with an Austrian accent. So them doing the accent makes you immediately go "oh that sounds like Arnold"
@@21pilotstillidie58 I'm German. I know how Austrians sound like and not all of them sound like Arnold. There are actually a lot of different dialects in Austria. It's amazing how many there are given how small the country is.
I loved it and really hope we get a sequel.
Your theories on what James Cameron is doing was hilarious 😂😂
Alita: Battle Angel was easily the most underrated movie of 2019
Honestly did not go thought I'd hade it ended up waiting rented and loved it
Yes, "top critics" at Rotten Tomatoes gave it 33%, but audience gave it 92%. That shows how rotten the film critic industry is.
To Joe's point. I 100% agree that certain things succeed artistically specifically because of their respective media.
I'm just here to hear what they say about JoJo. Oh and Joe Joestar isn't correct, but isn't wrong either tbh
If Joe star doesn't get cast in a jojo's bizarre adventure movie, I would be upset.
“You thought it was Ed Norton, but it was really me...DIO!”
I, 100%, disagree with everything you all said. Loved Alita, didn't feel like set-up, looked awesome, and it actually brought tears to my eyes.
They have no clue what they're talking about.
I really like Lon’s example of “hidden exposition” from Back to the Future
BTTF, in my opinion, is one of the best screenplays ever because it's filled with clever tricks like this. The whole "clock tower" third act is set up right away by a random woman asking for donations! You have NO IDEA when you see that scene that it's important exposition. Genius.
amazing how much film-craft you could learn from something your parents would stick on the VHS to keep you quiet on a saturday morning.
Where did they get five chairs and how many of them sink?
There's definitely one that sinks more than the others. Just saying.
Phaota woooow...>.>
Alita really is a dont trust the critics moment.
best manga adaptation is still old boy 2003 ,but alita was fine...but they rly missed an opportunity to cut in something from airborne , the real 90s skater movie ..btw do airborne
edge of tomorrow is not an adaptation of the manga or the graphic novel. they have some things in common. time travel. people that wear power armor. but even that isnt really the same. tenuous at best.
"They explain too much!"Later"I have questions"
Pick a lane guys
the best part about radudical is having grown up in the 90's that doesnt even sound silly, that sort of word play was rampant.
Some people love this movie. Some don't. I guess you could say this movie is alita divisive.
👌👏👏👏
Lon's Christoph Waltz sounds a lot more like Arnold
i LOVED this movie. definitely one of the best live action adaptations of a manga/anime. i also loved the Bleach adaptation on Netflix. i think this is for a niche audience though so i dont really expect everyone to get it. i found the story pretty good , it was an introduction. we DO need an origin story. comparing to Spiderman whose had a TON of origin movies to Alita is not fair.
So, I actually think the movie did a half-decent job with the pacing.
this is my favorite panel :) THANK YOU GUYS
Joe criticizes things so harshly sometimes with jokes that don’t land
if alita wasn't all set up and ground work for the next movies in sequence we would have gotten another avatar the last air bender or worse dragon ball. D:
this is the inherent flaw in making a long series into a movie.
Ah common
I also have to say wrong on not resolving any plot lines.
You suck.
Butthurt fanboy, out.
maybe it should have been adapted into a limited run tv series and not a movie
@@seni9644
Yeah, considering how much material there really is, it maybe would have made more sense, if the movie format would actually be the problem.
But it's more like people aren't used to not being spoon-fed every detail in one go anymore, like a disease caused by too much binge watching or something.
@@ShootAUT it's a movie, they didn't spit in your face... maybe chill a bit
Who else immediately went to watch Dan's review after he mentions it.
lol me
This felt like very shallow commentary.
Hell if there was a live action Yuri On Ice movie I'd definitely watch it
Just because someone doesn't like something, it doesn't mean they hate it. There is a middle ground.
Okay, Lon, we disagree strongly on Blitzball, but your pitch of "The Raid" in space makes up for all differences. That movie has to happen now.
Just recently watched The Watchmen movie, and Joe nailed the Rorschach voice.
Excuse me! Alita has a structure and a character arc. I went in to the movie blind, no idea about the source material or that it was a set up or anything. It introduced Alita and the world wonderfully, a beautiful film I saw many times.
Alita is luuuurve. I usually dislike anime eyes in Disney movies and the movie has its flaws (the romantic guy), but damn I love it and I love her!
I think you guys dropped the "roller ball" on this one.
If you want him to say My Wife like Borat then let him know, "My Wife ( in Borat's voice)" it's simple.
27:54: *MURDERBALL!*
Is that seriously a Thing, like from another franchise?
If not, it should be!
So who will be the John Favraeu of anime
@@NCMonefaith John Favraeu
Did... Did she just call Alita an android??
Yeah, constantly heard them call the cyborgs robots... it's hard to take a discussion/review serious that does not get this basic premise right.
@@corvus2512
As a sci-fi fan and especially a cyberpunk fan I know how important it is to be able to distinguish between man and machine.
Oh wait you do seeing as you wrote and entire paragraph about it 😊😊

Hoards of Alita fans? Not in the USA. The hype was Cameron was doing a manga movie and people have been waiting for years.
I think by the end she knows exactly who she is and what she wants to do next. And its set up for a sequel because there is more story to tell. That f...ing simple. That's just silly to me. A good critic is someone who who articulates with good examples why they think the way they think. I don't care if it's positive or negative. And Dan is incredibly good at explaining why he does or does not like something.

I really really liked this movie. It seems like critics of this film have double-standards. Just a moment ago someone argued they hated Alita because "it was sequel-bait", but I had to point out to them that they had previously loved most trilogies like Matrix, Star Wars, LotR, and other "sequel-bait" movies like the Avengers series. But he denied having any double-standards... Ok.
@@ThreadBomb Alita had an end. It's not the typical formula people are used to where the bad guy dies. But that's because the goal of the movie wasn't typical. The point of the movie was for Alita to find out who she is, and what her goal is. She finally achieves that by the end of the film.
