The fact Ricky was so gutted about this interview he cancelled the rest of the series, tells you all you need to know. Shandling chopped him up like meat.
Garry Shandling was fine in other interviews I've seen, its obvious he was trying to make Gervais as uncomfortable and awkward as possible as that what his shows are like. The whole thing is a setup and Ricky got schooled at his own game as far as im concerned..
I wouldn't say Gervais got schooled, cause most of the moments where Gary is acting like a dick truly weren't funny, and I thought that was objective at the end of the day: to be funny. I think Gary was genuinely pissed, struggled to hide it, then later justified his shitty behavior by saying it was all part of an act. Don't get me wrong, Shandling is a legend, but I just hated how he behaved here. It's SO unlike who he was
Garry was playing around. It was more funny/entertaining watching him be awkward, than watching Ricky constantly feeling hurt that he wasnt being validated for his work by one of his heros. Ricky was the preening fragile ego in this, Garry was having a ball
Can no one see this is set up? It's so obvious Garry is beating Ricky at his own game. Making Ricky Gervais feel uncomfortable and awkward is fucking genius. This is the best 'Ricky Gervais meets...' ever.
+bambamgti Na, don't buy it. Garry Shandling is quite obviously a genuine arsehole. Ricky Gervais was asked in an interview if any of this was set up. He just said: "it was what it was". Says it all.
After all this time I think Garry was at first a little on guard and Ricky was too overly familiar, but at the end they were fine after they both relaxed. Still laugh when Garry asks the guy over the phone if he knows who Ricky is 😂😂😂
How is this lost on so many people commenting? Gary pretty much invented (for TV at least) the kind of humor that Ricky made much more famous. That the Brits think they own and that people here apparently do not get. The fact that so many Brits are not getting this makes me sad. That was brilliant.
R Sulli I would be HONORED if I was Ricky, and Garry broke out this hostile routine on me. That's like saying "You don't need any help from me, you need a challenge!"
Garry put Ricky in the situations Ricky says he enjoys comedically. This was Garry being honest and trying to teach Ricky something. I thought Garry was brilliant and Ricky was caught off guard just a bit, which Garry wanted - Garry's last line summed up the entire thing.
Page after page of comments and almost every single one of them missed the point. Shandling is smart, a comedy (and marketing) genius. He, like many MANY other people dislikes Gervais intensely and finds him offensive. With that in mind, why would he try to make Gervais comfortable? And why would he give a darn what people on Gervais's sleazy little island think?
First time I saw this interview I took Ricky's side. After watching the Larry Sanders Show, you realise Shandling is so much deeper in his comedy and thought than Gervais ever will be. He can't deal with any of the actual questions, just repeats that 'embarassment is funny'. He's got nothing on Garry.
@CharlieBrown401 spot on. any 'awkwardness' in Shandling's work revolved around actual characterisation. Gervais prefers to just wheel out anonymous minority figures for cheap laughs under the guise of 'exploring' something or other.
They're both hilarious but Ricky is definitely phased here. Shandling did his best to make him feel uncomfortable to see how Gervais would react - he was looking for a sparring match. Shandling actually asks Ricky why he feels it's funny to make people feel uncomfortable, all the time trying to hold a mirror up to him. Very clever, I think. Ricky really should have made the most of it. Nice little insight, though.
It’s like watching two famous painters walk into a mutual canvas without realizing it. Shandling though, it was his own home. Judd Apatow talks about this interview on Neil Brennan’s Blocks podcast. Apparently, Ricky broke an agreement to wait to set up until Garry arrived. That’s why the awkwardness and hostility in the opening scene. It’s a plausibly deniable “accident” that Ricky and his team were already there. But Shandling felt slighted and disrespected. Sometimes I wonder if Gervais is a genius or an imp possessed by the Joker archetypal spirit. Shandling was a “serious person” - as he said in the ending, “he did the best he could”. You can really see him trying to contain his emotions. And of course, get some digs in while he’s “suffering”. Absolutely fascinating and insightful.
Here's the real story: Shandling had been struck by the idea that Gervais would be a great addition. Though he’d never appeared on the show, Gervais had spoken openly about how Sanders inspired him. So Garry called Gervais and asked if he’d do it. The answer was yes, but Gervais also had a request. While he was in Garry’s home, could they also shoot his Channel 4 show? Shandling agreed, and all was well until the day of the dueling interviews, when wires got crossed. Garry says he assumed they would shoot the “visit” for the DVD extra first, because “that laid-back, not-on tone is good preparation for saying, ‘Let’s turn it on'” later, for Gervais’s special. But when Shandling walked into his kitchen, he realized instantly that Gervais thought the Channel 4 special was being shot first. Gervais was on-extremely so-and so were several cameras. Garry could have said something but wanted to see what would happen if he played it out. What if he stayed in the same low-affect head space he was in to do his DVD extras? Could he reach Gervais without explicitly identifying the problem? Could he bring Gervais’s energy level down? “It’s fascinating, really,” Garry tells me. “We both became locked into the shows we were each doing, and it became a bit of a boxing match. Because he’s trying to get me to do the show that he needs, and I’m trying to get him to do nothing. I was trying to pull Ricky into the moment.”
I think that actually Garry was really smart and relised that Ricky's whole humour base is on cringe, unconfortable comedy (derek, the office, extras) so he made the interview extremely awkward as a way of making someone like Ricky (who comes across as arrogant and thinks he can shrug off anything thrown at him) actually live the unconfortable experience he simulates in all his comedy shows; to get a taste of his own medicine.
I think that he understood gervais' work pretty well, and thus made him feel uncomfortable so that he'd see it and laugh after. I thought he was funny.
Thanks for this, a superb piece of comedic teaching. I agree with you about Gervais. I'm not going to say he's a one trick pony, but as the years roll by...the Office seems to stand out from his other work. Most of his work is predictable. Gervais and his crew were rude. Gary dealt with him accordingly, being a professional showman, not a childish show-off.
Massive fan of both comedians. This video is fascinating to me. It's almost like an episode of Larry Sanders. It's really hard to say if it's real or not. It's like there each playing their on-screen persona(Andy Millman and Larry Sanders). Millman as the new comedy star who wants the respect of his peers and Sanders uncomfortable with and threatened by younger talent. Great video. I Have to see the full version.
It is very real. Ricky is a massive prick who *literally* thinks he is some sort of comedy God. We didn’t know that when he was playing David Brent, he was being himself.
The first thing Garry did was accuse Ricky of looking down the hall, then he accused him of lying, then he snapped at Ricky not to touch him. Not the greatest start.
By summarizing the video as 'two masters of comedy being awkward' you're, whether you want to acknowledge it or not (don't' worry, you won't), giving the impression that these two men are still in full-on comedy mode, doing what it is they do best. A tough sell.
Clean your palate of this uncomfortable conversation with the conversation of Garry Shandling talking with his old friend Tom Petty. It's so sweet and caring, you just wish you could see hours of their friendship. Thanks for posting this, first time I've seen it.
Look again, they have edited that segment to make Shandling look like a dick. The bit where he supposedly gets up to get a coffee is actually the footage from when he got up to answer the phone.
I can't believe how many people have mis-read this whole meeting. They were both having fun on a level which is obviously above most people watching this clip!
Shandling is a comedy god, twice re-inventing the sitcom. Gervais is in thrall to him and rightly so. And of course they're both in on the 'Shandling feels uncomfortable' gag.
I thought that Shandling found him to be a complete jerk, didn't like him, and made a complete pratt of him. Funny how perceptions differ. If it was ''all a gag'' I'd be surprised.
If that were true, Gervais would have let the interview air. He didn't; his ego couldn't take it. Gervais is hopelessly out of his depth here, and fails to learn any of the lesson that Shandling tries to teach him.
This is amazing. Like next-level awkward. It's like a meta clash-of-the-titans type of thing where the universe ALMOST implodes because of it. It's all intentional. It has to be. But are they on different wavelengths? Fascinating. I particularly like the part where Shandling asks him 'Why are you choosing to explore those uncomfortable moments.' To which, Ricky replies 'Because it's funny.' It's not funny at all here, but I'm laughing out of awkwardness. It's beyond funny. It's genius.
This is around the time Stephen Merchant stopped writing jokes for Gervais, so he decided to appeal to the lowest common denominator by becoming a cookie-cutter "edgy" comedian: 1. Tell people how much you don't care they're offended 2. Repeat Reddit joke from 2010 3. Reiterate how much you don't care
and oh, unlike Larry David and Christopher Guest, Shandling invites Gervais into his home...and the camera is already set up indoors when Gervais enters
Seems Garry was mimicking the sort of character Ricky plays(Mainly David Brent ) and Ricky didn't get it. I don't think it was staged with Rickys knowledge..why shelve it if it's staged?.
I'll be honest. I don't care for Gervais. I enjoyed watching Gary examining the behavior of Mr. G. and offering his critique on Ricky's humour and conduct.
Gary Shandling is actually a very funny comedian. I think that his choice to play the role of being difficult was not the best. Ricky seems to be a very light hearted character which just put Gary that much more over the top of looking like a jerk. Mr Shandling's early stuff is much better!

"what are you controlling?" hahaha If this is staged it's genius, if not it's still fucking funny
Shandling is a legend. This is his style of humor.
So he was just a nasty person?
Ma’am, you’re replying to a comment from over a decade ago
@@adamseda1004 Gosh it is a long time ago. I was killing time watching some Ricky Gervais on the Tube. 🤭
The fact Ricky was so gutted about this interview he cancelled the rest of the series, tells you all you need to know. Shandling chopped him up like meat.
Not true.
He only planned 3 episodes from the start
Ricky has the thinnest skin in the business next to Kanye West.

Is no-one going to comment on how Garry put milk in his coffee from a BABY BOTTLE? - what a great set up
Garry Shandling was fine in other interviews I've seen, its obvious he was trying to make Gervais as uncomfortable and awkward as possible as that what his shows are like. The whole thing is a setup and Ricky got schooled at his own game as far as im concerned..
+heres johnny Funny you should say that, Ricky Gervais made a couple of comments that clearly went over Gary Shandling's head.
It's SO unlike who he was
It was actually due to them both expecting different interviews. Check out Shandling talking about it in a separate video.
youre deluded
Garry was playing around. It was more funny/entertaining watching him be awkward, than watching Ricky constantly feeling hurt that he wasnt being validated for his work by one of his heros.
Ricky was the preening fragile ego in this, Garry was having a ball
Did you watch the whole interview or just this compilation? Shandling has tremendous respect for Gervais and his work he tells him this
@@TeddyBrennanya it did seem like a lot was missing
@@TeddyBrennanGarry was being polite to a guy who was in his home. With a camera. By surprise. He has no respect for Ricky 😂
Still laugh when Garry asks the guy over the phone if he knows who Ricky is 😂😂😂
"what are you controlling"? LMAO
The coffee bit was priceless.
They were both on the whole
clip with Gary leading.

Ben Culture Exactly.
R Sulli And when Garry says "Don't touch me", he immediately turns away from the camera, trying not to crack up.
Ben Culture I think he was honored by it, from what i could see he loved every awkward moment as much as Garry did!
Ben Culture I think he was honored by it, from what i could see he loved every awkward moment as much as Garry did!
Gervais, what a twot, a man who laughs AT people, never WITH lovely people, so happy to see the tool utterly schooled here
Garry put Ricky in the situations Ricky says he enjoys comedically. This was Garry being honest and trying to teach Ricky something. I thought Garry was brilliant and Ricky was caught off guard just a bit, which Garry wanted - Garry's last line summed up the entire thing.
Ricky’s uncomfortable fake laugh says it all. Ricky can’t handle not being in control. He needs a Karl Pilkington to belittle to get anyone to care.
I'm glad we still have Ricky...
07:28 "How rude! Fucking hell..." Isn't it funny when people who are accusing others of being rude are being equally if not more rude?
Ricky’s insecurity around a real, legendary comedian is palpable.
@@DABA2024 You are replying to 6 year old comment, get a life you loser. Ricky is more successful than you could be in 100 lifetimes combines.
@CharlieBrown401
spot on. any 'awkwardness' in Shandling's work revolved around actual characterisation. Gervais prefers to just wheel out anonymous minority figures for cheap laughs under the guise of 'exploring' something or other.
A lot of nervous laughter from Gervais.
He’s saying goodbye - perfect Shandling
They're both hilarious but Ricky is definitely phased here. Shandling did his best to make him feel uncomfortable to see how Gervais would react - he was looking for a sparring match.
Shandling actually asks Ricky why he feels it's funny to make people feel uncomfortable, all the time trying to hold a mirror up to him. Very clever, I think. Ricky really should have made the most of it. Nice little insight, though.
Best comment on this thread!
You can't say zebra makes me laugh every fucking time...

I think that he understood gervais' work pretty well, and thus made him feel uncomfortable so that he'd see it and laugh after. I thought he was funny.
Thank you Ricky for your gigantic fake laughs, without them James Corden would be a shadow of his current glory. Thanks for that.

Millman as the new comedy star who wants the respect of his peers and Sanders
uncomfortable with and threatened by younger talent.
Great video.
I Have to see the full version.
I think you put it perfectly. 😊
It's absolutely real.
It is very real. Ricky is a massive prick who *literally* thinks he is some sort of comedy God. We didn’t know that when he was playing David Brent, he was being himself.
Rick Gervais, Mitchell Huruwitz and Larry David need to bow down to Garry...
The first thing Garry did was accuse Ricky of looking down the hall, then he accused him of lying, then he snapped at Ricky not to touch him. Not the greatest start.
Just two comedians riffing off each other.
I have more respect for Hank Kingsley after watching this interview.
Fascinating. Especially seeing how people are misinterpreting this.
He says "What are you, controlling?"
that's the funniest thing ever
He had a show in the 80's called 'It's Garry Shandling's Show' and he also did 'The Larry Sanders Show' in the 90's.
Some real insight into the type of person Ricky Gervais really is. And it’s not good.
Not really. The insight is into what TV producers are like, as Shandling explains here: th-cam.com/video/PJthU3_CuiM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=htHr57c4ufwbdsB_

I saw this at the time, and I thought & still think that they both arranged this ahead of time. I think it was all deliberate from them both.
Look again, they have edited that segment to make Shandling look like a dick. The bit where he supposedly gets up to get a coffee is actually the footage from when he got up to answer the phone.
he does that laugh everywhere- and i dont think its fake, it does get anooying though lol
I can't believe how many people have mis-read this whole meeting. They were both having fun on a level which is obviously above most people watching this clip!

Gah I watched the full version. I retract my comment. This is brilliantly edited. Shaldling is brilliant.
Shandling is a comedy god, twice re-inventing the sitcom. Gervais is in thrall to him and rightly so. And of course they're both in on the 'Shandling feels uncomfortable' gag.
Finally somebody gets it
@@TeddyBrennan Don't condescend me, you big twat
I thought that Shandling found him to be a complete jerk, didn't like him, and made a complete pratt of him. Funny how perceptions differ. If it was ''all a gag'' I'd be surprised.
Exactly. These comments are cracking me up
If that were true, Gervais would have let the interview air. He didn't; his ego couldn't take it. Gervais is hopelessly out of his depth here, and fails to learn any of the lesson that Shandling tries to teach him.
If this were a boxing match, the ref would have stopped the fight in the second round due to Gervais being unable to continue. Man against boy.
The Coffee bit is GENIUS!!! Makes Ricky uncomfortable after Ricky said he loves uncomfortable!!!!
This is around the time Stephen Merchant stopped writing jokes for Gervais, so he decided to appeal to the lowest common denominator by becoming a cookie-cutter "edgy" comedian:
1. Tell people how much you don't care they're offended
2. Repeat Reddit joke from 2010
3. Reiterate how much you don't care
Larry Sanders is a comedy genius and that’s why Ricky chose him
Final parting shot from GS "Sorry did the best I could! " ...classic dry, droll, deadpan British humoUr and yet GS is American...
Well played Chaps!:)
and oh, unlike Larry David and Christopher Guest, Shandling invites Gervais into his home...and the camera is already set up indoors when Gervais enters
Anyone have a video where Gervais is talking/reflecting about this?
The podcast with Sam Harris around 35 minutes in
Brilliant. I love this!
Incredible
COME ON GUYS!!!
I've been watching comedy for 50 years since Sgt.Bilko and I know Ricky's style of comedy and I'll bet a Million Dollars/Pounds that this has been scripted between the two of them!
There are so many clues like The Coffee moment and where he keeps walking on his own etc....
Its a CERTAINITY that this was planned and it must have been cleverly performed as many on here, unbelievably, think this is REAL!!
I GUARANTEE that its a joke, well performed!
If anyone had watched the Larry Sander's Show, this interview was hilarious.
