Eternals gets a bad rap. Its biggest problem was that it should have been a series instead of a movie with each character getting a focal episode rather than cramming them all in the way they did.
A series in the vein of The Haunting of Hill House would have been great, yeah, with each Eternal getting an episode focused on developing them, and having consistent flashbacks each episode to further explore their presence throughout history, as well as just their own history. And Bob Chapek would have absolutely given every single cent to fund that expensive show. But I personally feel the movie not only works as it is, but could've benefitted greatly from another 20-30 minutes of screentime. If ever there were a Marvel movie that NEEDED to be 3 hours, it was Eternals.
I think it should have been a series AND a movie. Because to me those visuals belonged on a big screen. But it would have worked a lot better if we got to know the characters on the small screen, getting to know them close and personal, get to know the mission and their history from their point of view, then see their full scope in the cinema and have the big twist hit way more. While not trying to do 3 stories at once.
I think they learned the wrong lesson from The Inhumans, which was supposed to be a movie, shot in IMAX, but ended up following on TV after the early success of Agents of SHIELD. Disney buying ABC and Marvel messed all that up in funneling everything to Disney+ before having a plan. Feige's been doing his best to handle the transition with all the COVID complications, and hopefully it's all going to make much better sense from now on. Of course, they were never going to get Angelina Jolie for a TV series, so a movie series is the best they could hope for.
It should have been something built up to. Tiamut should be an Avengers level event. Like how they have been putting the Young Avengers throughout phase 4, they should have also been putting an Eternal in them. There should have been an Infinity War type of movie that teams the Avengers with the Eternals to stop Tiamut from hatching. As is, The Eternals feels like they tried to condense every episode of 3 Body Problem into one movie.
This episode was one of my absolute favorites from this season. The scene of Arishem grumbling when he’s arriving to Earth kills me every time I see it 😂
Kingo don’t know about the emergence in the movie because he wasn’t the head Eternal. With the others being dead that means he became the head Eternal and learned the truth
Agree! Though I'm not sure how I feel about her current form post Agatha All Along. I know it's comic-accurate to a degree, but... it seems cheesy to me. I trust Kathryn Hahn to make everything enjoyable no matter what, though. (Speaking of: someone tell Lord & Miller we're still waiting on that Doctor Olivia Octavius backstory and/or solo film, please!)
The Eternals were not aware the entire time in this universe, only the Prime Eternal. As Agatha defeated each of the Eternals the glowing marble of leadership (and the visit with Arishem where he fills them in on what only the leader knows) would have transferred several times until it was just Kingo holding the (tiny) ball.
A surprisingly delightful episode- with multiple Agent Carter Season 2 references! (Howard Stark's movie studio in LA and his Hollywood flirtation, and Jarvis shooing away his natural enemy: the flamingo). Definitely one of the strongest episodes of the series. And combining Agatha and Eternals (which I really enjoyed as a film) makes it all the better.
I haven't finished the season yet but this one was so much fun. Kingo and Agatha were the teamup I never knew I needed and getting to see the James D'Arcy version of Jarvis was such a treat!
I always get a joy out of the TV actors showing up to renew their roles in some way. Obviously Dominic is always great, I loved seeing James D'Arcy appear in Endgame and this episode, and of course Anson Mount returning as Black Bolt in Multiverse of Madness.
When I see online comments complaining about this episode, I simply have to wonder what those folks are hoping for when they come to watch this show. For me, this episode is the purest distillation of what What If? should be all about 😄❤️
I LOVE that this season is visiting The Eternals again. I have always said though, Eternals should have been a show and MoonKnight should have been a movie.
I love Eternals and think it's a fantastic movie so there was nothing to fix for me, but I also love Agatha and Agent Carter season 2, so mixing those into that sweet Eternals crunch with lots of "we love the movies" sentimentality and big splashy dance numbers just plusses it all for me! This episode was such great fun and I'd absolutely be down for a sequel (since we'll sadly probably never get one for the movie...sigh... :( )! Also, this entire reaction was worth it just for Jay's "We've got the whole world in our Hahn!". LOL!
If you think there was nothing to fix, how do you feel about the whole Deviant storyline? I was disappointed with that whole plot... the villain never really made sense. I liked the film but I felt the criticisms were accurate
@@thehouseofoverthinking the one critique I did have when it first came out was wanting to see more done with Kro and the Deviants (as Kieron Gillen was able to do in the comics a few years back). But on subsequent viewings, it doesn't bother me as much or strike me as a weakness of the film, just something that could have made what was for me a great movie even better. So it wouldn't have been a "fix" so much as an "added feature". Like seat warmers. 😁 Either way, this episode didn't really address that, so even if I did feel like it needed fixing, this wouldn't have done so. 😎
@jtmaxwell I just loved this episode for showing us Agatha Harkness as a cosmic queen! She almost made up for all that Howard Darcy Byrdie nonsense later on.
@thehouseofoverthinking agreed on Cosmic Queen Agatha. But Howard and Darcy was some of the most fun I had with a TV episode last year (got it in under the wire!), and I'm freaking obsessed with Byrdie and want her in everything from now on! 🥰
@@jtmaxwell haha I'm glad you liked her. Personally I couldn't stand her because there was no creativity in making that character. It was just "Let's put Natasha Lyonne in the MCU". Her voice. Her face. Her personality. Her humour. Kahhori felt like she belonged in the MCU but Byrdie I just found to be really inorganic and forced. Also, it completely leans into the whole M-She-U accusations when the climax is all female heroes, and when they create a new character from scratch... another woman. Personally I love female driven stories, but Marvel was purchased by Disney for the purpose of getting boys under the Disney banner. Then they screwed the pooch by trying to turn this into Jem and the Holograms. Even Storm in this felt wholly unearned and unrewarding. They just plonked her in because they could. But that's digressing... Like I said, I like female-driven stories. My own creative writing revolves around women and their relationships. But that doesn't mean the MCU should be grabbed by the horns and forced into being something that fails on a business level and incurs the wrath of many fans.
Honestly, Agatha being both the Protagonist, and Antagonist for a much more concise Eternals plot is perfect. If the movie had made the Eternals the bodyguards to Tiamat and Agatha takes their powers to save earth (while also serving her own scenes) that makes a lot of sense. And she could do a total MIB planetary memory wash to keep people from talking about the celestials (which would still let the Adamantium plot in Captain America 4 move forward).
This doesn't _really_ change the idea that the Eternals didn't know the true nature of their mission. At the start of the movie, Ajak (Salma Hayek) was the only one who knew, because she was the only one who was in contact with Arishem; the others are meant to be kept in the dark precisely because they might rebel against the plan. After Ajak died, the knowledge passed on to Sersei (Gemma Chan). Sersei was supposed to keep it a secret, too, but immediately rebelled and told the others. In this episode, Agatha has already taken out all of the other Eternals. Kingo knew because contact with Arishem had already passed on to him; he was the only left. (It's not made clear how Agatha found out.)
My only regret is that they didn't show the other eternals like my two faves Makari (the most realistically filmed speedster EVER) and Salma Hayek because....well...I mean.... she's SALMA HAYEK. 🤣🤷
Sorry guys, but I disagree. I liked Eternals, and have hopes they find a way to get back to them. They keep providing Kingo cameos in other productions, so he's got this kind of presence anyway. Galactus is on par them, which could be a plot point coming up in FF. (Uatu originally appeared in FF trying to disguise Earth to fool the Silver Surfer into passing it over, the first time he broke his oath.) Galactus could well have devoured either intelligent life prepping a Celestial, or Celestials themselves, and would have an ongoing enmity. Something killed the Celestial that became Knowhere, and disembodied Ego, and we have yet to learn what. Moreover, we still have half-Celestial Peter Quill back on Earth, with a comatose Tiamut. He could gain a connection with the light again.
The Eternals wasn't a Bad Movie at all seen it 2x and enjoyed it both times. Its like a 7/10 hardly the worst superhero movie ( we have Madam Web, Morpheus and Venom 2, Ghost Rider 2 for that.)
I wish you guys were doing Creature Commandos. It’s so good. Though I know you don’t usually do WB properties since they can be a bit… heavy handed with their Copy Right.
This is among my top 5 favorite _What If...? (TV series)_ Season 3 episodes, and I'm happy you two enjoyed reacting to it. Plus, Celestial Agatha Harkness is truly a god-level beauty.😍💜✨
I haven't seen Quantumania, and I agree on the Love and Thunder slander, but... I personally really enjoyed Secret Invasion and don't quite understand the massive amount of hate it got 🤷♂
@KBRoller Had the gall to use AI “art” in the intro, killed off Maria, Soren, and Talos, made Nick Fury look like a massive moron, wasted Emilia Clarke and turned her into the single most pointlessly overpowered character in Marvel, tried to imply that the Rhodey we saw in Infinity War and Endgame was a Skrull (cheapening Tony’s death scene), and my personal biggest gripe, this was the first project to come out after She-Hulk, which ended with Jen griping to Feige about how too many MCU projects end with big pointless CGI clusterfuck battles, only for Secret Invasion to do exactly that, with incredibly dodgy CGI to boot. Personally, I would have loved this two be part two of a What If series. In part one, we would have Agatha discover movies, come to Hollywood and use her magic to become a movie star.
The ONE video of Previewed that honestly hurt my heart to watch was their review of The Eternals. As a lover of that movie it truly hurt that they didn’t like it, ESPECIALLY with their love of other MCU projects. Obviously, “To Each Their Own,” but having Jay & Adam dislike it rains on my parade.
I don't spend money on DLC/microtransactions, as a rule, but the Gilgamesh card would fit perfectly into my main deck (a Wong + Odin + Iron Heart + White Tiger reveal deck). So I've had him pinned in the shop for so. Incredibly. Long. As I try to build up enough tokens to buy him through the Collection Track and missions alone. When I finally get him... I will be so happy.
Love this one! It's fun, the visuals are great, the premise is bonkers but works for the characters, even if it's over the top. I still think there were 3 great films in Eternals. Speaking of 'too soon'...(in re: Hollywood burning...again). I was checking my clock to see when y'all would reference Howard Hughes, only to be disappointed. UNTIL that nice little Red Letter Media reference afforded an ultimate hall pass.
They've had a lot of trouble with Warner bros going copyright crazy so as long as that isn't an issue they will probably cover it it is a great show and it's the first thing in the new dcu
Does anyone know if Jay and Adam have mentioned Skeleton Crew in any of their recent videos? I know they had a break for Christmas but they're super far behind on that show and I see them starting totally new shows now.
The Eternals hate irks me a bit because, as many other commenters think it’s not a bad movie. I’ve watched it multiple times and I only like it more after each viewing. It’s not perfect, I think some of the Sersi/Icarus stuff could be cut, but also think as a whole it should have been longer. To help flesh out more of the other characters. I also think they screwed up by having the main deviant become humanoid. It would have been better to have it die after killing Gilgamesh. It wasn’t needed in the last act against Thena
I mean... those aren't the only options. It's not "either you liked it or you're stupid". People have different preferences, and that's okay. Personally, I didn't *hate* the Eternals, but I didn't enjoy it much, either. It was very meh to me 🤷♂ "Good" and "bad" are subjective: to each their own. For instance: my least favorite MCU movie (keeping in mind I haven't seen the MCU Hulk, Quantumania, or The Marvels, but I've seen every other MCU property -- both TV and movies) is Black Widow. Somehow, a lot of people absolutely love that movie, but I absolutely hate it. The writing, to me, was awful, and I just couldn't understand how we were supposed to root for any of the protagonists except Nat (and maybe Yalena). The reveal of Taskmaster was so shoddy, and everything together was such a huge disappointment, since I love Nat's character. And yet, so so so many people love it. Which is great for them! We can all agree to disagree.
Maybe the problem with the Eternals not that it's not a good movie the problem is the nitpicking reactors like yourselves who don't watch what you're reacting too half the time and just do stand-up all through your reactions. The movie wasn't really that bad as you're making it out to be. And judging from your other crap takes on films and tv shows you're the last reactors that I would listen to for non bias takes on things.
Eternals was not the worst movie ever. However, the story it wanted to tell was on the level of Avengers or Justice League but with no previous build up with so many characters and across thousands of years.
Eternals gets a bad rap. Its biggest problem was that it should have been a series instead of a movie with each character getting a focal episode rather than cramming them all in the way they did.

YES
Adam saying "yum, yum, eat 'em up" and the classic Hollywood setting made me think of my favorite Little Rascals short.
This episode proves that Marvel Studios can make an animated Eternals series, one that takes place after the events of the first Eternals movie.
I particularly loved the comedy that Jarvis brought to this episode as the straight man.
The movie you were talking about - with the adventurers who shrink down and go inside the body - is Fantastic Voyage
There was also a reimagining of it called Inner Space.
or there is the movie Innerspace with Dennis Quaid.

9:00 Agatha Harkness, a TRUE Cosmic Queen! 😁
Boy do I need this after today, great timing boys 😂
I just got the Third Act Surprise line...
Love this one! It's fun, the visuals are great, the premise is bonkers but works for the characters, even if it's over the top. I still think there were 3 great films in Eternals. And we got a celebration of movies in there too because of it.
This was my favorite episode the season. But it's really weird watching this tribute to Hollywood/LA knowing it's all burning right now!
Jay seems to be in his element today.
I have to disagree with you on Eternals. Eternals was a good movie, but it would have been better as a TV show.... but it was still a good movie.
0:55 hey Jay, I think that would be osmosis jones…
Speaking of 'too soon'...(in re: Hollywood burning...again). I was checking my clock to see when y'all would reference Howard Hughes, only to be disappointed. UNTIL that nice little Red Letter Media reference afforded an ultimate hall pass.
If I had a nickel for every time Agatha became some kind of glowing translucent being, I'd have two nickels...
Why is this the last season of What If? It seems like every episode of all the seasons have been bangers.
That cliffhanger makes me so angry because they NEVER DID ANYTHING WITH IT. We NEVER see any more Eternals. What a crock
3:47 My favorite part! 😁😁😁
Pew! Pew!
All I can say is to something they said, the people who who have watched the full show know, is.........welp.
Creature Commandos next!👍
They've had a lot of trouble with Warner bros going copyright crazy so as long as that isn't an issue they will probably cover it it is a great show and it's the first thing in the new dcu
I’m tired of the hate this movie got. It’s a good movie.
The movie Adam was looking for is “Fantastic Voyage” (1966). th-cam.com/video/dO5E4wkg0hA/w-d-xo.html
Does anyone know if Jay and Adam have mentioned Skeleton Crew in any of their recent videos? I know they had a break for Christmas but they're super far behind on that show and I see them starting totally new shows now.
We didn’t stop Skeleton Crew, eps 5&6 is coming out this weekend and eps 7&8 will be next tues & weds
@pReviewd Awesome!

I watched Cobra Kai! And What If has started very good 👍
I have seen bad Marvel movies and Eternals doesn't even crack the 10 worst, not sure what you guys have against it
Y'alls dissatisfaction with Eternals is one of your few missteps, in my opinion.
I watched the Cobra Kai reactions 😢
Aww Adam, I really like eternals
I don't understand....why doesn't Agatha use that power to bring her son back?
LFG ! 🎉
I question the logic of doing a musical episode without singing. Especially given all the Agatha songs chart.
when are you guys gonna post the rest of skeleton crew? there are ships i need Jay to react to!
How can you hate Eternals😭😭😭

I’m tired of the ETERNALS slander… just because you plebeians couldn’t wrap your heads around it, didn’t mean it was bad.
I mean... those aren't the only options.
They didn’t come back to it
Eternals was not a bad movie
Were they drunk watching this? It was a bit fun but it wasn’t THAT fun
That was not better than eternals
