Def my fav build of yours so far! Bass player here, I really appreciate the tone of the hollow body, and the reclaimed theme is done tastefully without compromising the sound of the instrument.
I have to say what a great job you did. There's no other feeling of satisfaction when you are done with something to be able to play it. Anybody can go to the store and buy one get really takes a special person to be able to make it yourself. You don't do what others on TH-cam do by ordering a kit. You go ahead and take raw wood repurposing and turned it into something beautiful to see and to hear. I just found your videos tonight and I look forward to watching more.
That is a lovely piece and it looks like it has a real history. I always wanted to learn to play bass, but fear it is too late now. The sound was, hearty and warm, the only way I can say it.
I (and certainly others) make very small and light base guitars, like ukulele's basically. Perhaps something like that would easier fit in to your life right now?
Hey Tim...gotta tell you that it is a pleasure watching you develop as a guitar builder. The fit and finish keeps getting better all the time. The Bass is beautiful!
Love the reclaimed method. My buddy is a talented Luthier, when I worked at a shop years ago he used to have me pull apart pallets to use the 2X4's for necks.
Woaw, that's the most beautiful bass i've seen in a while. I'm astonished, as always with your work : beautiful instruments and perfect tone Thanks for uploading Tim, you're truly an inspiration !
Dude, that has got to be the coolest bass I've ever seen and heard. I haven't played bass since 1980, but I'd play again with one of those. That's awesome!
I dont know how else to say this but this is by far the most..... Polished piece to come from you. IT still has your super unique style and the level of polish highlights your already cool luthier perspective. All the best TIM
Such astounding variety of sounds you can get from this one. Definitely something for everybody in this one, even a Bigsby. 😁 Not to mention it just looks beautiful. The aesthetic is just awesome! Love the well-worn wood and all the decorative details. Thanks for sharing!
I don't know what all the switches do here, but I love the fact that when you hit one, it actually changes the tone! I've seen so many builds with series/parallel/dual/single/phase/etc. but I can't hear any noticeable difference in sound. Great job!
That is one awesome Bass guitar build Tim! Your luthier skill set is over the top my friend. Hope that you & your family are doing well & staying safe.
Super impressed with what it actually is and it's tone! You always amaze me..and feel everyone including the big guitar companies should have your mindset.
Great Tone Starts with Great Strings. STRINGJOY custom guitar and bass strings are crafted one at a time by Nashville musicians who know that great art is made with great tools. Through innovative designs, first rate materials, and labor intensive winding techniques, they make it their mission to craft the finest strings in the world, bar none.
Tim, an alternative to the awkward router table binding cutting process on that curved shape, put that bit in your CNC machine, clamp the z-axis, and with the machine off but the router on move the x-y axes around by hand to follow the guitar perimeter. Set the guitar on your fixture pucks to level out and clamp or set weights on top. Assumes your CNC can free-wheel when not powered. Nashua aluminum flashing tape (hvac tape) works well for shielding at $8/roll that shields a couple dozen guitars. Really nice guitar design and build.
that is a very good idea, but the back is curved too so it would still be a matter of setting up a proper jig, just upside down. i could have put pucks or something on the router table, too. I thought it was flat enough so I could freehand it steady but I got a little wobbly.
OMG the bass turned out beautifully! This is the bass Jethro would have used in Beverly HillBillies! It's like a Les Paul bass, (but bigger bass body) single cutaway, hollow body, instead of F holes, it has X holes! Definitely mass produce this and put on market. Trademark this and copy write this design for protection!
I love basses with tremolo/vibrato systems! Very cool build. It's good to use whatever you have laying around to build instruments, and what do all those switches and knobs do?!
@@timsway that's cool! I love having a kill switch on my guitars or basses, but none of my instruments have an actual kill switch, but I can use the pickup selector switches as one (only on a few guitars).
It would be neat to see an entire line of Tim Sway Bass Bodies on the market, P bass, Jazz bass bodies made from different woods, all set to fender neck pocket depths and specs, to match standard Fender replacement necks and warmoth necks. So I could have a Tim Sway antique Chestnut P bass body, or a Tim Sway Fender Jazz body made from Pallet strips all glued up like a cutting board bass and CNC'ed to Fender specs'. This is the beginning of your destiny. You could take logs, out in the forest, and show the milling process, the drying process, and the final CNC process, or even old school NON -cnc made the 1950's way. This is a dream of mine, to see you do this. Or you going to a reclaimed wood pile in the middle of a wood dumping area and talking about what makes good wood for bass building versus, what wood would be non usable.
@@timsway You make it look so easy, I thought I would just build it myself. ; ) Seriously though, I have a nearly inexhaustible supply of maple, cherry, and walnut on my property. Building guitars is one of my retirement plans.
Hey friend another amazing video. Where do you source all your amazing reclaimed wood. I've found some good pieces at ct river lumber company down in old saybrook.
I have gone down too many internet rabbit holes and between seeing this reclaimed barn wood bass get made and some of the various blacksmith/prop makers/machinists on TH-cam i half want to see Tim collab with one of the blacksmiths to make at guitar or bass with least some of the bigsby and other larger metal parts out of forged or Damascus steel maybe even using reclaimed metal from farm tools. Though one would need to do something to protect the metal from rusting if plain steel is used.
Wow! This is an absolutely amazing build! Are those all capacitor switches?! Other than the kill switch of course. And is that a drop tune lever at neck😮❤❤❤
There are just so many knobs and switches, it’s perfect
Looks like something Les Claypool would play on Duo de Twang gigs. I think he’d love this.
I enjoy eating copious amounts of expensive cheeses.

The amount of tones you could get out of that would make it the perfect bass to have in the studio. Awesome work.

I like how the music harmonizes with sound of the saw. Almost sounds like a musical instrument itself.
Astounding bass. Pure beauty to behold. So cool to see detail of the build.

As my dad, a carpenter, would say, "You can never have too many wood clamps"
Great video Tim! Such a cool build. That level trick on the table saw is genius! I will for sure be using it moving forward

Really gorgeous, and the design language seems so coherent too!
