    It looks like Rankin and Bass have combined their Holiday special vibe with their Tolkien vibe.

    • @MaskedMan66

      William Craig Baum vibe, if you please! L. Frank Baum, author of the first fourteen Oz books, also wrote the book on which this special was based.
      And Rankin-Bass's first T.V. special was the cell-animated "Return to Oz," based on their cartoon series "Tales of the Wizard of Oz."

      @@MaskedMan66 True, though Rankin Bass also made their Hobbit and Return of the King films not too long before this one, so they may have also drawn on the high fantasy experience those films gave them as well as their experience with Baum's work.

      +Christopher Spaulding If you watch all their specials, they had their own distinctive style which complimented whatever they were doing. It wasn't what they drew from for their ideas, it's what they put into other people's ideas. :-)
      Besides, I frankly doubt Tolkien would have cared for what they did with his work, not because he'd have disliked their style or anything, but simply because he didn't like adaptations of his work as a rule.

    Magic, excitement, wonder, action, fantasy, thrills, adventures, and music. At the beginning of the film, Great Ak summons the immortals to call council to convince them by giving Santa Claus the gift of immortality, so he can continue to bring joy and hope to the world. And I like the song performed by immortal beings, Immortality. It sounds strong and mighty, if I do say so myself. Santa Claus (Kris Kringle, Father Christmas and St. Nicholas). Legendary heroes like Santa and Peter Pan deserve immortality, to live forever and ever without aging and growing old. Perfect for me. I love magic and fairy tales, always have and always will. I never gave up believing in fairies and magic with all my heart because I still refuse to grow up, and forget about the precious things I knew, especially those from my childhood. I am like Peter Pan. Believe in magic and never grow up. My one and only wish is to keep the magic alive for all time. I also wish to be a fairy to stay strong, childlike, young, and beautiful forever and ever like the fairies in the forest of Burzee (The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus), Fantasian fair folks (Fantasia/Fantasia 2000), the blue fairy (Pinocchio), the fairy godmother (Cinderella), Tinker Bell (Peter Pan/Tinker Bell), and the celebrated fairy godmothers (Sleeping Beauty). Never grow up, yuck! Merry Christmas, everyone of Burzee, and a happy new year!

    This was always my mom's favorite Christmas Special, and honestly, I didn't have as much appreciation for it as a kid. Everything about it is so "Grand" and "Epic", like if The Lord of the Rings (or at least The Hobbit) was about Santa Claus. It's also much more serious in tone compared to Rankin-Bass's other stop-motion productions. It's incredible, and it's nice to know they at least went out with a bang, since this is their last stop-motion special.

    • @MaskedMan66

      People keep bringing up Tolkien's work, but this is based on a book by L. Frank Baum, the creator of Oz and its environs. Rankin-Bass already had its own versions of _The Hobbit_ and _The Return of the King._

    • @xalm8761
      @xalm8761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MaskedMan66 Didn't Baum write the story as a Oz spinoff? I read somewhere before that the Forest of Burzee was actually part of Oz, occupying parts of Oz's western regions. And I think I remember one of the later books in the series had one or two of the fairy folk being present at some court meeting. I think it was one of the books where the Nome King was involved.

    • @MaskedMan66
      @MaskedMan66 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@xalm8761 Burzee isn't in Oz, nor on the Continent of Imagination, as are Oz, Ev, Ix, Merryland, and many other fairylands. It's on our side of the magical barriers, but the Forest is inhabited by fairy folk, including Queen Zurline, whose name is similar to that of Queen Lurline, the mother of Ozma and the creator of Oz. I would imagine that they are of the same train.
      And to be sure, all of Baum's fairy stories are connected-- a "shared universe," as the concept's now known-- as evidenced by Santa Claus and many of his attendant creatures being present at Ozma's birthday party in "The Road to Oz." Santa was the guest of honor and sat at the other end of the long dinner table from Ozma herself.
      I'd have to look over the books to see about that court meeting you mentioned; it does sound familiar. :-)
