I've watched the 2000 version on Cartoon Network for several years, watched the movie on DVD for just as long and it STILL holds up as my personal top favorite Christmas movie. Not only do I love the world of Burzee, the lore behind all the traditions of Christmas we practice and the voices. But I also love the fact that even before he became known as Santa, Nicholas wanted nothing more than to bring joy to others. These days, while I DO hold on to the belief that Santa is real; that belief has matured quite a bit as I grew older. Now, I see him as more than just a person. As Richard Attenborough once said, Santa is a symbol. He embodies the human ability to be able to suppress the selfish and hateful tendencies that rule the major part of our lives. As long as that kind of selflessness exists in our world, even if it's rare, Santa IS real
The fact that Shiegra had a voice in the animated version was something I thought was a plus. However I found the fact that she was merely a mortal lioness to be bittersweet.
I remember seeing a promo for this movie on Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theatre! (and recently seen it on DVD that I found at Dollar General!) p.s. Mike Young Productions was the same animation studio that worked on the animated series of Clifford the Big Red Dog (and stars the late John Ritter as the title character) that premiered on PBS kids in 2000!
When you said that in the Rankin-Bass version, older Santa was voiced by the same person as Mumm-Ra, one thought came to mind: "Ancient spirits of Christmas, transform this old form to SANTA, THE EVER-LIVING!"
2024 Update: it's now available on DVD/Blu-ray Ray on the Rankin/Bass complete christmas collection of 18 specials from 40-60. Great value for what it is!
I got to say I love your clip shows I've been fine a lot of cartoons and TV shows that never would have found without you and I want to watch so thanks and Merry Christmas to everyone and everyone and God bless every one of us that's a fact that's the reason for the season Jesus Christ!
Merry Christmas! I remember the 2D version from reruns on Cartoon Network. I love it and you're right, no one talks about it. Splash Entertainment WHY?! You did good once. I agree that both versions are good watches. I need to check out the book. When Nicholas' mortality is argued over, it gets me, especially when he himself expects his death to come. Thank you for this review and stay safe.
Fortunately, the Rankin Bass version has been airing on AMC for the last couple of years. However, I agree there should be a box set of all the Rankin-Bass specials.
Thank you for all your WONDERFUL videos Rob! I relaly liked that this one is a comparison between two different versions. The Rankin Bass version will always have that unique charm that, sadly, we may never see again.
One thing that I can say about the voice acting is that it could have been worse, they could have had the Ocean group from Vancouver doing this but I'm glad they gave it an American cast with Robbie Benson, Dixie Carter and even Jim Cummings voicing Santa Claus!
Cool video! I remembered the 2000 version. Didn't know about the R&B version. I'll have to look for it. A blu-ray collection of all the R&B specials would be amazing.
I've seen a few commercials for the 2D film on Cartoon Network years ago, and I've seen several people talk about the Rankin/Bass stop-motion film, but I've yet to see either version. I'll be sure to watch them someday, especially since it'd be really cool to see a high fantasy version of Santa's origins. Merry Christmas Rob!
I grew up with this version. I didn’t even know that Rankin/Bass made an adaptation of this until years later. I find it a little weird that they made it since they already had a special that told their own story of how Santa Claus came to be. I’m not complaining, I just find it weird.
I still find it odd that Rankin/Bass did two origin stories of Santa. I've watched "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" first and discovered "Life And Adventures" on TV (I think it was ABC Family). Needless to say, I was pretty confused and taken aback by its haunting tone. But, after a while, it grew on me even though I favor "Comin' To Town" a little more. I loved the intro song, "Immortality" and "Oh Child"; they're pretty underrated.
This might actually do very well with a live-action remake, provided its handled by people who know what they're doing and it isn't grey as soot, like most movies these days
Merry Christmas Rob, i don´t understand why you have such a little following. Your content is awesome. Your channel is criminally underrated. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Germany ---- Frohe Weihnachten
I enjoyed the Rankin/Bass version of this special. In my opinion, it featured some of their best character designs and it was a good end to a great era considering it was the last stop motion Christmas special they produced. I haven't seen the other version, but I'm slightly intrigued. Merry Christmas.
I've seen both versions, but the 2D one is the one I have seen the most... and I honestly prefer it over the Rankin-Bass one (though both are interesting in execution & style). It's nice to see someone finally compare the two versions that actually likes both of them! Merry Christmas to you, Rob!
It’s funny before I watched this I saw the end of the stop motion one that and the stop motion one was apparently labeled as coming out in 2000 in the listing

The 2000 one is the one I grew up with and I like it better as a result. Nothing personal.
I remember watching this quite a few times when it showed up on TV. Still remember the Cartoon Network's Cartoon Theater promo.

This was cute short
I personally think that they both have great points and equal merits

Agreed

I remember seeing this film a couple of times on tv when I was a kid. However, I completely forgot about it until I saw this review, lol.
Merry Christmas to you too!

Winnie the Pooh voicing Santa Claus...yeah, I can totally get behind that!
Merry Christmas!
I love both versions but the 1980s is my favorite out of both.
Merry Christmas Rob!
Merry Christmas Rob :)

They just released a full Rankin/Bass collection on Blu-Ray last year and The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (1985) is included #Yay
Merry Christmas robthewonderful

I definitely agree with you on this short being underrated

For some reason I personally prefer the original stop motion version over the cartoon.
Happy Holidays Rob!
Cool Rankin Bass

It's on TH-cam last time I checked.
Saw it on daily motion and it’s cute
Damn it I was just about to go to sleep. Well going to watch this now because I want to have something nice to send me off to bed
I can't believe Mon*Star was the voice of Santa.
