    Improvisation always seemed out of reach for me. It was totally alien like trying to read Chinese. Then I discovered your channel. You are a born teacher and know how to break elements into simple steps and then reassemble them into intelligent, manageable chunks. You also have a warm, reassuring personality. Thanks so much for all the work you put into these excellent videos.

    Thanks Scott! I’m a beginner and you’ve given something here that’s interesting to practice and add to my playing. I’m focusing on only one key at a time for quite a while (weeks). I do add chromatics and modes and I sneak in other keys as well. This really will help to break out of diatonic boredom.
    You’ve also included another concept of adding interval jumps, so I’ll look at those too. Eric dolphy really used them to great effect along with “interesting” notes.

      @ScottPaddock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Craig, as a beginner stick to the easier keys.... C G D A F and master it there.

    • @craigiefconcert6493
      @craigiefconcert6493 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Paddock thanks for the advice and tips and videos! I decided to start with the “harder” keys and just learn by ear but the awareness of the note names is creeping in. My logic is that way the harder keys will seem easier and my ears will come first.

    This was REALLY helpful. Short and to the point! maybe you could do a video when you show us how it can be put into practice with a standard like 'A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square'? Many thanks, love your videos

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, I'll be doing tons of ad lib videos in the very near future, and adding in chromatics will always be a part of them.

    I was afraid of an yet again bebop scale description BUT your tutorial is far more interesting, thanks :) It would be even better we sheet music instead of note character but I'm picky

    • @craigiefconcert6493
      @craigiefconcert6493 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrGeolm actually, I like the presentation. Worked great for me and fit on the screen nicely. Sheet music could be as a supplement but why bother as its so clear?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I thought about writing it out, but as Craig said, the way I wrote it made it super clear exactly how I was doing it, and in the context of the way you will end up using this it will rarely be in reading music, so seeing those half steps as letters actually makes it more functional.

    Man I love Scott’s energy and his lessons are great but I’m not sure if it’s his mic or what that that sax sounds like it will peel paint like some out of control kazoo or something.

    Professor Paddock, this is a great way to implement the chromatic elements around a scale. I have two questions; First, Is there a reason that you started with the sixth note of the scale for this exercise and second is would you apply this same pattern to the other scales or would you change it?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't a real reason that I chose the 6, except it sounded good 😁 but I start on the 6 and go chromatic to the 7 so I'm actually playing all of the notes in the scale. You could use this pattern on any major scale, but you'd have to switch some things up to make it sound good on minor scales.
