I have grown stevia from seed for 4 years now. I have had 80% germination rate by doing the following. Wet the seed-starting soil very thoroughly (sopping wet). Carefully sprinkle the tiny seed on top. Place under light (if starting inside) or outside where there is light. Don't water. Seed sprouted in 3 days. Only water from the bottom and do not overwater. As they grow, water just enough to keep the soil from being completely dry. Last year I overwatered at some point and they never recovered. This year and in previous years I was sparse on the watering and have great success.
@@thanginh3202 set the seed tray inside a tray with no holes and put water in the bottom tray. Don’t water from above. After about 30 minutes, dump the excess water. Never let the seedlings sit in water. Only water when the soil is light brown. Dark brown soil means it’s wet. Don’t let it stay light brown for long or seedlings will dry out. Check at least once per day.
I was just going to say exactly what you said about my experience in germinating them lol. First time trying them and I messed up somehow by it being too wet and 3 days they're up! Will be careful from now on! Thank you Jim.

Stevia is very hard to start. I usually only get a couple of plants out of 25 seeds, but I bought some seeds from Baker Creek Rare Seeds and they were coated we something. I got about 90% germination rate. Plants are doing great.
Iv had great results with the seeds when pressing ontop of soil and leave uncovered by dirt and under a lamp or grow light. Mine germinated in under a week :)

I bought on eBay made in China. Thought they'll not germinate but at my surprise, they germinate in only 6 days and already got lots of leaves. I bought my seeds for USD 0.75. I live in Mauritius in the center of the island where it's not hot nor too cold, I've sow my seeds in a big pot, filled with normal soil from the ground then cover it with plastic bag to stay warm until the germination started. Stevia needs high temperatures in order to germinate.

Its easy to Propagate STEVIA by cuttings.. Me , I got so Many STEVIA in my Garden, Almost One year now, i do not buy commercial sugar, i only use STEVIA, for Alternative sweetener .
I have a good tip for sprouting, i bought some wal-mart Turnip seeds and place those seeds on a napkin, wrap them over and enclose the opening, then water them to do a final seal. Roots are coming out with Cantaloup and the turnip seeds, once more roots establish then cut out the seeds and place the roots and remaining napkin into the dirt. This is way better than not knowing if they rooted or not.
Gary Pilarchik no problem, you just got to make sure that the paper say moist, not cold, and choose the method that suits you the best, because theirs many ways to do it.
Thank you for this very informative video! It answered my questions about the experience I am having with growing stevia, and made me know that my "germination rate" is normal, and also that it grows slowly. I'm encouraged now that everything is going as should be expected for stevia. Thanks again for your help!
Thank you so much Gary Pilarchik for sharing your knowledge and experience on this tutorial video on how to germinate stevia! I can't wait to get started and try my hand at growing my very own stevia. As I'm a city-dweller, will your method work as well indoors?
Since your effort is dedicated to new vegetable gardeners, here is a tip for tuff seeds that I used with big success: I put the seeds between two plastic transparent foils and sprayed them with water. I kept the moisture high and after some days I saw some seeds germinating. When the size is between one and two inches I made the first transplanting very carefully. It is a bit difficult but the method is worthy. You can try it.
Thank you so much. This was very informative. I've learned a lot from your lessons. I checked the stevia video because Harris Seeds sent me a complimentary bag of stevia seeds and I wanted your advice on how to plant it. You said only the dark seeds will germinate ... my seeds were all dark and large, so I'm recommending them .. I suppose after one year you can harvest your own seeds?
I tried multiple times to grow Stevia with no luck. Some seeds would germinate, but the leaf I saw never got any bigger than the head of a pin then just disappeared. I got my seeds from Harris Seed, which is a reputable company, so I don't know what happened. Used up the packet so I'll have to order more. I'm not giving up! 😄

It does sound like you buried yours too deep, but this is an old video, so... From the successful commenters and the tiny size of the seeds, I'm guessing they need light to germinate. Since they're of tropical origin, it seems likely a bit of warmth may be in order. Wish me luck!

Hey man. I bought an organic stevia & bay plants then I discovered it had 2 kinds of things walking on the soil when I water them :s I took a cutting from the stevia hoping it will work & see what I can do will the mother plants! any advice?!

Do they fly around. Tiny black gnats. Fungus gnats don't hurt your plants but they're disgusting. Get a Pinguicula plant and set it besides your plants the gnats will get stuck on the leaves. Don't fertilize pinguicula they get their food from the bugs stuck on the leaves. I like nature working together.
Hi Gary..i have 2 questions plz..1st..why is it such a poor terminator?also 2nd question plz..when we dry it or use it fresh in drinks..is it ok to eat it..or should we not eat it?Thank you
Stevia is fine to eat. You can buy processed stevia in packets or drops for sweetening anything you like. You can grind up your stevia or steep it in water to make drops or you can just eat the leaves. Many baked goods require actual sugar because they rely on the chemical composition of sugar to work for the recipe, but anything that can be made with artificial sweeteners can also be made with stevia.
I never tried to clone them. That would be great. They are so hard to start from seed. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. I recently bought some stevia plants at my local nursery. mmmm so sweet. However they need re-potting & I would like to know if just a good potting mix is ok. Also I live in a fairly hot climate, summer temps average around 30c should i have them full sun or semmi shade
Hi, I germinated some stevia seeds but I don't know how often should I water them? I am new in garden matters and don't really know how much and how often should I water my stevia seedlings? Thanks
I live in Cambodia and I want to plant it too, but I’m worry it’s can’t grow up like in your country because my country is how, and I don’t know it’s can plant it in my country or not, can you tell me about it?
I saved seed from several stevia plants I got as a gift last year. I have tried planting several whole flats and in many different sized pots, and with different rates of watering, and with different soils... and so far I have one lone large seed starting pot that has successfully grown 2 little plants (The pot is maybe a little larger than quart sized). (And I have planted hundreds of seeds... interestingly it is a pot I totally neglected it, so like the mother plant i have deduced that it thrives in drought conditions. I have now taken my garbage bag full of seeds I collected last year (which I was very careful to dry out completely) and put it outside for a few nights of freezing (zone 7)... I am wondering if it is one of those seeds that can benefit from the cold. Does anyone know?
Yes, I am having further frustration with it. I may get a handful of plants. Apparently one can cultivate more plants with trimmings from the original. It is my new goat to take several clippings from what ever I do get this year and try to keep them alive in the greenhouse or inside for next year.
They are kind of a nuisance to collect and right now, new sprouts are coming up. I originally got them on eBay, Poland will give you most seeds that are good germinators.
Would starting this in a terrarium style pot work better to germinate it? Just as in some herbs I have tried to grow. I had success once I put toothpicks into the soil to hold saran wrap up into a bubble.
lol what is wrong with my stevia,,,,it's still small it's like 6 months later,,,i actually had no problem germinating 100% OF THEM BUT THE OTHERS GOT EATEN OR SOMETHING THEN THIS 1 LAST STANDING ONE IS ABOUT 1 INCH ,,,sorry my keyboard is messed up I think the ants loooove this baby when it's tiny so now I have mine covered with a plastic ziplock and it's doing ok it's actually growing now,,,i have 4 seeds left but im on quest lol if I can get this one good then it should be enough but gosh if I could get them going be great to sell them,,,the fun is seeing if you can get it going ;p Ok the brand I got was from hirts garden (Supersweet Stevia - 10 Seeds - Sweetest Stevia pk one) so the directions say sow just below surface at 65f or higher keep evenly moist provide light and humidity which I put by window with ziplock over tray all germinated ,,,,it might be that the temps now are just getting higher so it might spurt soon,,,but I had them going when it was warmer but def keep them covered till larger

Maybe your seeds are slow to germinate bcuz they don't like the way you're pronouncing its name! 😉😉😉 I'm just kidding! (Sort of...🤭) I just gotta say - I've heard hundreds of people say ~ Stevia ~ but NONE OF THEM pronounced it the way you do in this video. They always pronounced it just like the name STEVE. With the eee-ahh at the end. I'm not trying to be the pronunciation police, I'm ok with regional pronunciations. Really, I am. You do you, is my motto. I just thought it was interesting that you're the ONLY person I've heard it pronounce it that way! Just curious, do other gardeners near you pronounce it that way too? I tried to germinate stevia from seeds last December, 8 out of 10 seeds sprouted but they grow really slow. My plants are 8 weeks old but only one fifth of the size as you shown in the video :(
That is success. They are really hard to sprout.

So, apparently there are different types of Stevia seed...? Yours says 'HoneyLeaf' others say, 'Stevia Rebaudiana'. I can see the leaves are different also.
Hey man. I bought an organic stevia & bay plants then I discovered it had 2 kinds of things walking on the soil when I water them :s I took a cutting from the stevia hoping it will work & see what I can do will the mother plants! any advice?!
+Roi Sergio What was walking around?
+Gary Pilarchik (My First Vegetable Garden) something like white spider I guess! & a small black like cockroach. my dearest pepper is dying. I don't know if it got something from the other new plants :(
Do they fly around.
@@cindyskillman544 hi😊thank you for your help
I know stevia should be pruned for bushier growth, so I'm wondering if those prunings would make good clones, or if it's just too fussy of a plant?
I never tried to clone them. That would be great. They are so hard to start from seed.

I recently bought some stevia plants at my local nursery. mmmm so sweet. However
they need re-potting & I would like to know if just a good potting mix is ok. Also I live in a fairly hot climate, summer temps average around 30c should i have them full sun or semmi shade
+sandy fo Yep any standard potting mix is fine. It should have a good percentage of peat moss and that is a good water absorber.
+Gary Pilarchik (My First Vegetable Garden) Thanks Gary
good informative video
Thanks so much.
Can we germinate it using paper towel method
Hi, I germinated some stevia seeds but I don't know how often should I water them? I am new in garden matters and don't really know how much and how often should I water my stevia seedlings? Thanks
+MikiCuriel When the top of the planting mix you started them in is dry.
I live in Cambodia and I want to plant it too, but I’m worry it’s can’t grow up like in your country because my country is how, and I don’t know it’s can plant it in my country or not, can you tell me about it?
Well they best way is to try and grow it. Plant grow in many ranges of temperature.
They are sooooo hard to germinate! I stopped trying.

Yes, I am having further frustration with it. I may get a handful of plants. Apparently one can cultivate more plants with trimmings from the original. It is my new goat to take several clippings from what ever I do get this year and try to keep them alive in the greenhouse or inside for next year.
Its a tropical native to Paraguay and Brazil if I remember correctly so it shouldn't require freezing temperatures.
I know many people that have no problem growing Stevia.
you are not kidding. All the reviews I read on Baker's Seed is that stevia was hard or never germinated.
I live in Miami, Stevia grows like weeds.
So hard to start out here.
P Hernandez hi can you send some seeds to me in California.?
They are kind of a nuisance to collect and right now, new sprouts are coming up. I originally got them on eBay, Poland will give you most seeds that are good germinators.
Where to get seed or plant of Stevea in Karachi Pakistan
Online etsy
You just need to get the seeds to make contact with the soil. Do not cover the seeds cause it needs light to germinate
sounds like propagating might be faster?
Cloning seems to take much longer than most other herbs, I've found out this year.
Mint takes 1-3 days, cactus takes months.
Would starting this in a terrarium style pot work better to germinate it? Just as in some herbs I have tried to grow. I had success once I put toothpicks into the soil to hold saran wrap up into a bubble.
stevia is one of few plants that I would say humidity type dome would help.
lol what is wrong with my stevia,,,,it's still small it's like 6 months later,,,i actually had no problem germinating 100% OF THEM BUT THE OTHERS GOT EATEN OR SOMETHING THEN THIS 1 LAST STANDING ONE IS ABOUT 1 INCH ,,,sorry my keyboard is messed up
I think the ants loooove this baby when it's tiny so now I have mine covered with a plastic ziplock and it's doing ok it's actually growing now,,,i have 4 seeds left but im on quest lol if I can get this one good then it should be enough but gosh if I could get them going be great to sell them,,,the fun is seeing if you can get it going ;p
Ok the brand I got was from hirts garden (Supersweet Stevia - 10 Seeds - Sweetest Stevia pk one)
so the directions say sow just below surface at 65f or higher keep evenly moist provide light and humidity which I put by window with ziplock over tray all germinated ,,,,it might be that the temps now are just getting higher so it might spurt soon,,,but I had them going when it was warmer but def keep them covered till larger
They are so hard to start I stopped growing it from seed. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com
Steeeevia like the name Steve.
Why don't you sprinkle mycorrhizae on the root ball?
If you do the plant will take off!
FRESH SEEDS GERMINATE EASELY VERY SOON....OLDER ONES VERY FEW
I tried them lastyear, ordered plants, they didn't grow well at all.
Susan Rogers They are tuff
i want to start stevia farming
+Yuvraj Patil It grows well once established.
I have seeds saved from stevia I had growing outside. So it's sad google leads me to a video that the comments are way better than the video.
That happens in life.

Maybe your seeds are slow to
germinate bcuz they don't like
the way you're pronouncing its name!
😉😉😉
I'm just kidding!
(Sort of...🤭)
I just gotta say -
I've heard hundreds of people say
~ Stevia ~
but NONE OF THEM
pronounced it the way you do in this video.
Signed,
Me & Steve, hanging on the
edge of our seat to find out ❤
Ok

no, it's 3x sweeter, not 30
Don't they make flower and make seeds? Why buy seeds each year?
lirg123 I even collected seeds. Still poor germination. They come in a husk. And they arent all viable. You get some many bits and pieces of useless matter.
Oh good to know I’m not the only one having a bad germination with those. :/
So hard.
