Port strike 2024: Massive inflation looms without deal | LiveNOW from FOX

  • A strike by dockworkers at 36 ports from Maine to Texas, the first in decades, could snarl supply chains and lead to shortages and higher prices if it stretches on for more than a few weeks. Jason Greer, Founder & President, Greer Consulting, Inc., joined LiveNOW from FOX to discuss.
The contract between the ports and about 45,000 members of the International Longshoremen’s Association expired at midnight, and even though progress was reported in talks on Monday, the workers went on strike. The strike affecting 36 ports is the first by the union since 1977.
Workers began picketing at the Port of Philadelphia shortly after midnight with signs that read “Fight automation, save jobs, ILA demands” and “Automation hurts families. ILA stands for job protections.”
The U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents the ports, said Monday evening that both sides had moved off of their previous wage offers, but when picket lines went up just after midnight, it was apparent that no deal had been reached.

Do these port workers not understand shutting down the ports up and down the east coast and in the gulf is going to affect their families too when stores start running out of goods. They'll cause prices to go up, and we all know how that usually turns out. They never return to the previous prices. Whatever they might gain will probably be spent on the higher cost of goods. Does that make any sense? We have all been underpaid in any job we've worked. Wages go up, and the price of goods goes up. So the only people that come out ahead are the owners of any given company, and the worker stays in the exact same boat. Making more, but spending more. Strikes just feed the wolves.
If these port workers had even an ounce of compassion for others, they could have held off till people recovered from the past hurricane. It's evil, to say the least. What goes around will come around in time.

  • @craigt9203

Said truth, I was part of two unions back in the day. Still amazed how corrupt and nasty they protect people that don’t do their jobs when they should fire them. These people are complaining with union pay that they’re not getting paid enough. There should be some level of automation And I’m not for automation in a lot of things. But when it comes to supply chain, we desperately need supplies. We learned that during the last few years of craziness. These people should’ve held back their strike at least until some of the people got on their feet down self. Clearly all they care about is me me me . I’m working disabled with multiple injuries sleeping in an RV due to cost and slept in my car while working 40+ so I can pay down my bills. Guaranteed all these striking idiots have homes and yet they pull this crap when the country is hurting most. The head of their union should’ve said guys we need to hold off for another few months. Typical union I would never join one again most wasted part of my money lol glad I got my union dues back wasn’t worth me paying them.

Absolute selfishness! Our people are already suffering and shutting down 50% of ports in the midst of dire straits is completely unacceptable! At least go work while this is under deal talks. This is going to cause panic shopping out of fear. It will also disrupt those who need medications., and materials and parts to clean and rebuild areas of our country that were absolutely destroyed. This baffoons are going to suffer like the workers at McDonalds did. When wages were raised, hours were cut and lay offs happened. Meet half way and stop this ridiculous demand. This is a prime example of why we as a nation need to stop being so dependent on imports. Praying for all who will be affected by this if a resolution is not reached quickly.

That $81,000 adds up when its 45,000 or 55,000 employees. The company cant afford to pay every single one of them a 6 figure salary. $100,000 across 55,000 employees is $5,500,000,000. The company wont exist if its paying its workers that much. But we've been taught corporate greed is the worst and that money shouldnt go to the people who started the company and risk to lose everything if the company fails.

  • @Glock_Lesn4r

Most unions are no work no pay. The elected officials get paid, but you don't. I worked that way for 25 years. You save when times are good to prepare for the bad times. Worked my ass off in the production/convention field only to lose everything I worked for due to covid. Most corporate events are companies showing how AI and automation can replace your workforce. Not limited to manual labor industries. Cisco, IBM, Dell, Intel, the list goes on.

Pro tip: It's not possible to "reignite" inflation when we're actively heading toward deflation because the US consumer is the poorest and weakest they've been since the Great Depression. When demand for goods crashes 90% like it has, there comes a correction, and this one is going to be sharp and brutal as unemployment quadruples, worse than what we saw in 2009 when it hit 10%. Wait until you see what happens to the housing market. 2008-2010 will look mild by comparison.
