hey kids! as most of you all already know, Uncle Ben Eller here is a GIANT Marty Friedman fan! His playing on those early Megadeth records, like Rust in Peace or Youthanasia, is still SO fresh, innovative, and excellent. One of my favorite things he does is utilize sliding arpeggio shapes across two strings to imply AWESOME harmony ideas over simple power chord riffs. This lets us hit important chord tones while soloing, plus keeps us from all playing the exact same "sweep picking up and down through arpeggio shapes" stuff that we hear WAY too often.
in this lesson, you'll learn a bunch of different arpeggio shapes and how they connect over a common Em Am B7 Em chord progression that you might find in a minor blues or gypsy tune. A lot of Marty's playing is very similar to how gypsy players play, actually, even down to his bizarre picking style.
Hope you all find this lesson useful! Be sure to drop me a comment and let me know what else you want to see over here on my channel. Cheers!

Always great content really like that riff! I do find that there is always alot of respect for all kinds of layers of picking because that stuff is takes time. a friend showed me a black and white video of his favorite violin player doing a entire solo with one hand and every note sounding even it was proof enough practice would equal perfect.

I have a video of my playing before I found your channel, and recently made another video of me playing to a backing track after months of your lessons, the difference is night & day. I'm not a pro by any means, but definitely improving for sure because of folks like you & your generosity to provide free lessons like this. Much respect to you Uncle Ben!!

Ben you are the BEST teacher that's ever lived. Even professors of music and others cannot match the details and patience, and effectiveness of your instructions. You need to be getting paid A LOT for the things you've done for many musicians, and you need to be world renowned. WAY too underrated.

Great lesson! Definitely nailed the Friedman vibe. My favorite players all have different approaches to playing arppegios that are more nuanced than the typical straight up and down sweep picking approach. Marty has the cool sliding patterns, and does some string skipping as well, Paul Gilbert does the incredible string skipping stuff, and guys like Jeff Loomis or Jason Becker use sweep picking extensively, but apply all kinds of cool patterns to it and use the technique with such flexibility that it's completely different from the more typical sweep picking sound.

The way Marty works arpeggios sounds so much better then all the other cliche sweep picking, before youtube was around n u could see all the people around the world appreciating Marty’s work n putting their own take on what he’s doing, we use to call them shattered arpeggios.

One thing about Marty's arpeggio playing is he often picks like a gypsy jazz guitarist in by that I mean he does downstrokes for all ascending AND descending patterns as in one note per string, which is also why his hand is allowed to freely rest like that at all times.
