  • This week I'll be showing you the power of using a Rim Light for your portrait shots in studio photography with our Giveaway Prize - PIKA200 PRO. There's still time to enter the giveaway to win a PIKA200 PRO, just use the link below (closing date 22nd November).
    Beanie joined us in the Studio to effectively show you how to elevate your dog photography studio shots by using a rim light behind the subject, adding separation from the background and dimension to the photograph.
    Rim lighting, also called hair lighting (that's technically a different thing), isn't difficult to do. For this rim light how-to we go through the correct set-up and power of your rim light, perfect rim light angles, and when to know you're ready to shoot!
    Complete with unedited RAW files throughout 🙌

    Great Jess! Do we mostly use rim with dark background and dark dogs? can we use reflector for purpose of rim?

    Very good tutorial as usual.. I got one speedlite a reflector.. And now a grey card on the way after watching one of your videos... Sadly one of my pets died the other day Daisy.. And this is the first video I have been able to watch.. With pets in it.. I was wondering if you had any advice on photographing pets after a loss..as at the moment I can't even look at another bunny.. And i photograph rabbits to help get them adopted.. I hope you don't mind me asking this question.

    My camera seems to be having a lot of trouble focusing on the subject when I have it set for flash. My dog as a longer snout so I’ve had it at 1/250, F13 and ISO 1000. I’m using two speed lights with a soft box for the key light and bracket for the rim light. Camera just seems to take forever to focus, I’m using an A7 IV

    Hi, If I do not have another flash, could I add a reflector on the back instead?

  • @Charlie_Butterworth
    @Charlie_Butterworth ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What size softbox are you using? The narrowness seems obviously useful for minimizing spill to the front and especially the background.

      My exact one is an older version that is 20cm wide, but this one is the closest and the same height at 90cm, with the grid: www.essentialphoto.co.uk/products/pixapro-30x90cm-easy-open-strip-umbrella-softbox-with-4cm-grid

    Hi Jess, what would you say is the minimum t.01 flash duration needed for crisp action shots in studio (treat catching, jumping etc)? Love your work! 😊

    This video helps out a lot. I only have octagonal softboxes, can this be used as a rim light too?

    • @daemon1143
      @daemon1143 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, but they'll spread further, so helps to have a grid on them, or you can mask parts of them with craft cardboard. Usually you end up with it pointing at less than 45 degrees, to limit the light coming forward and throw the spare light behind the subject. They work fine, just takes a little extra fiddling.

    • @melgallant5632
      @melgallant5632 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daemon1143 thank you for your response ☺️. I was actually practicing today and I can see where the fiddling comes in. I will try tomorrow again with your suggestions! Thanks

    Hi Jess! I have been binging your dog photography videos. What would you suggest for an entry level camera for pet portrait photography? I have a Canon T2i and was looking to upgrade but not sure which would be a better investment. Thank you so much! (Also if anyone else wants to put their own recommendations I would appreciate that too) :)

      I'd definitely go for a Sony mirrorless - such as the A7iii for example, I've found the Sony very light to handle and very versatile

    Hi Jess, forgive me for posting this question here but wasn't sure where else to ask it. I want to photograph mainly miniature dachshund dogs which don't really get bigger than 11 lbs. I haven't yet bought my backdrop because I'm not sure what size stand/paper rolls to buy. Can you recommend a good size for this need? Thank you so much in advance. This will be super helpful!!

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      2.72m gives you options if you can fit it in, smaller is ok but you still might need to do expansions 🤓
