We're growing up yes, but the standard of games have gotten very high.
Making it more costly for developers. This results in in AAA companies not wanting to take risks.
Which leaves us with very uninspiring games and repetitive game models.
Perhaps we have seen it all at this point, that could be why we lose interest too

AAA gaming is dead. Stop getting excited because of expensive ad campaigns; if it's good you'll hear about it a few weeks, or more like a few days, after launch. If it's not, give it three years and then check reviews, it might be halfways decent by the time it's finished, and it'll be a fraction of the price to top it off.

As a guy who grew in the late 1990's and the 2000's, games became too much of the same. I remember going to GameStop where there would be a variety of games to pick. There was also the convenience of just putting the disc into the console and you'll play the game within minutes. Installing a game could take hours depending on your circumstances.

my biggest reason for giving up on games is because it feels like a chore. so many games have implemented the battle pass system and other features to keep you coming back. back then, i didnt realize it but the sense of completion was extremely important. now i know that even if i finish the available content, they'll just put out a new season with more content and you'll have to put in more and more hours of grinding to get everything. it all feels like a chore. i used to want to play these games, and now there's a feeling of "i HAVE to play it" if that makes sense. why would i grind for hours to get the newest weapon if it will be outclassed or obsolete by the time the new season comes around with cooler, better weapons. it makes the grind seem pointless to me. and everyone can agree that the implementation of microtransactions have put a sour taste in our mouths in regards to the gaming industry for many, many years now.
i remember coming back from school, the movies, or basketball practice and seeing the gamefly envelope with a new game i rented and i was HYPED. i would spend all night that game through its entirety and have a blast. nothing else could bring me that kind of enjoyment at that time. i havent had a feeling like that batman arkham knight and uncharted 4. i will say that from what i can see, nintendo continues to make games that put fun and enjoyment first. if i was gonna invest in playing games again, i would get a nintendo switch. but chances are that wont happen anytime soon now that life has been consumed by the responsibilities of being an adult. time management has led to me cutting out one of my biggest pleasures in life being video games. it was necessary since i knew games just did not hit the same anyore like optimus said in the video. i have to focus on college, family, friends, girlfriend, and my wellness. dont have time like i did during my childhood.
this was a long tangent but here's the tldr for people who didnt want to read through it all.
TLDR: games today with their battle pass systems, seasonal updates, and additional content make playing games feel like a chore more than anything. there is little to no sense of completion when you know there will be something new to come afterwards. this is one of the main reasons why i dont have a love for games anymore.

The industry isnt taking as much chances as its used to ..but so are gamers these days with not wanting to feel like they wasted money on new games that didn't meet expectations.

I've had one experience that was a huge exception to this. One day a few years ago, I decided to get Far Cry 5 on a whim. Never had played a Far Cry game before, but decided to go for it. I was blown away, and was LOVING it. Got about halfway through the game, was super invested and raring to go, and then the third party cloud service just... lost my save. Didn't realize it was ONLY on that third party service, and no matter how many times I tried to find the save on my computer or troubleshoot, it seemed to just have NO record of my save. So I quit playing it to this day.
It was such a melancholy experience- finally, I find a modern AAA game that I'm really into and having legitimate fun with like I used to with new games, but because of the modern AAA method used to store saves, my game was just suddenly... lost. So even when the AAA experience pays off, it seems the AAA experience gets right in the way. To this day, that remains one of the single biggest disappointments I've ever had in gaming. I could hardly imagine something like that happening for that kind of reason in an old school or indie game. Not necessarily because they didn't have the tech, but because they would never risk that kind of liability with people's saves and gaming experiences just to hold the rights to it themselves.

In WaW you started off as a POW being tortured then you get saved and the Marine looks you in the eyes, grabs your hand, pulls you to your feet, hands you a 1911 and says “Grab a rifle” then there are things like the clip of the Soviet soldier planting the USSR flag on top of the Reichstag at the end. I think Fortnite affected a lot of games after its release. The way Fortnite treats in game purchases kinda made it acceptable for other companies to push microtransactions and battlepasses. Also the way Fortnite really tries to make you give it all of your attention makes other games have to use the same tactics to keep your attention. I don't really think this is a bad thing but it really does change the way developers make their games now. For me I think gaming pre-fortnite is different than gaming post-fortnite. • @Mothyn
      @Mothyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ok, two points:
      (1.)
This lack of diversity is caused by the fact that these systems are the" Tried and True" parts of gaming that netted companies tons of money, leading other companies to apply the systems.
Unfortunately, the Battle Pass/Item shop systems don't seem to be going anywhere soon due to this factor...
      (2.)

This whole thing really depends on how long you’ve been playing video games. For most of us 2007-2012 was the golden age of gaming but for younger kids this is probably their golden age of gaming. We all loved Halo 3, and all the good times we had with friends and all that. Games like Fortnite are probably the newer generation of kids’ Halo 3. We experienced gaming evolve to impossible heights and over the years less things reach those heights. A lot of us are just now jaded cynics who have already seen gaming evolve to impossible heights while others are experiencing this kind of thing for the first time. I’ve had several games that have blown me away over the years (mainly singleplayer stuff) but I wasn’t playing games in the era of Black Ops 2 and GTA 5, I also go through stages of addiction.
Also the aim of companies has changed because they’ve found their formula for making stuff. It’s mostly no longer about innovation but money. This mostly applies to multiplayer games for me.

I understand when you mentioned about newer generation liking how the games are right now but for me who is kinda stuck in the past and was born 06, I love the games around 90's to 2000's. I never love the games such as Apex or shooting games since it doesn't gives me the vibes of what I've used to play. I love Minecraft but it doesn't feel the same as I grew older. So I stopped playing all of that and switch to anime games more than the what the world's loved. Sure anime games are the same but they at least have nostalgia points if you're a huge fan of anime since childhood. Like for example, do you love Kamen Rider? For me, yes. I want to play to it again. What about other games like psp? Yes. I love gaming, but not like in the phone.

Times are getting hard, we are all being forced to do with less. Job worries, housing issues, supply issues. It's really hitting people hard and many really yearn for the stress relief games offer.
But the reality is when you get older, your "priorities" change. Now its "hey I got a few extra bucks to spend, but I need a new tire or I can get extra groceries".
Also gamers are being squeezed more for services and AAA games and the lack of Next Gen consoles doesn't help. So with all the weight on your shoulders, is it any wonder anybody is overly enthusiastic for new games? It's easy to reminisce when your older when you didn't have as many responsibilities. Were games better in the past? Somewhat yes, but got to find happiness even when there isn't a lot to go around.

There have been tons of great games in recent years but the amount of garbage shovelware that can be found is even bigger than AAA titles.

Great video and it really hit home. I'm 54 and have been a gamer all my life. I started with Atari 2600 and graduated to an Apple IIe. From there went to super nintendo then playstation I and II. Before computers got really big in the 2000's, I still was mostly outside with my friends. I'm now divorced and my kids have grown and are out of the house and my main form of entertainment is gaming on my PC. I don't play consoles anymore, PC ftw! However, for the past 3+ years, I stopped getting excited about playing games and it has bothered me greatly since it's what I like to do. I've bought games and they sit in my Steam library untouched - games in the past I would have been chomping at the bit to play and now I couldn't even be bothered. I think it's mostly that I'm older now which is sad. Here is my list of things that I don't like about current games:
    1) Most games that I like to play today require me to spend literal hours researching how to play on the internet. There are no more game manuals. The games have become so complex.
    2) Early access - I know I could just wait for the full version to come out but these companies want me to pay full or near full price to help them beta test.
    3) I miss owning a physical copy of the game. If you are on Steam or one of those, you don't really own the game - you paid a fee to be able to use THEIR game.
    4) So many controls to worry about. I usually spend an hour remapping all the keys on my keyboard just to be able to play
    5) Nothing new and exciting. The thrill is gone, I've seen it all. One of my favorites was Skyrim but if a new Skyrim came out, what could it possibly have that would excite me?
Anyway, great video, glad I'm not the only one!

I don't know if I agree with that sentiment dude, for multiplayer games, map packs are just an outdated form of DLC cause it splits the community, especially when you have multiplayer map packs, either nobody plays them so they go back to the base game where all the players are and that work gets wasted and nobody experiences it, and because of the divide in player count the game overall suffers, most of the time it's just a fruitless business venture for both the player and developers, plus single player games are following the DLC trend, specifically cause it works for them, so it isn't going away

Even gears of war is toned down in the newer games now. I just want games to feel adult again when they’re m rated and not just an appeal to younger kids. I wish games where rated m because they’re mature not because they just added the basic gore and language. I think we’ve fallen really away from high quality individual games nowadays. I think it’s mainly contributed by the fact that now with the PS5 and Xbox One X that run SSDs with insanely quick load times it makes gamers more excited about flipping from one game to the next instead of staying hooked on one individual game. I haven’t seen many games within the last 2-3 years that have hooked me like the greats of the past and i think it’s more about quantity (remakes, repetitive multiplayer concepts and adaptations) over original quality that solely focuses on the game’s own uniqueness.

Yeah the “games as a live service” focus has turned a lot of games into endless treadmills that are designed to just waste your time endlessly. Games just don’t respect the player’s time anymore and that makes them very unappealing for adults

I feel you on this. I think a big part is the gaming industry. They don't care about keeping great features fans love anymore since their main goal isn't their fans anymore. Their main goal is money and researching algorithms that makes people stay playing or buying items. So now a lot of bs that would of been free costs money. The soul of the devs is gone. Gaming is lonely now. Especially with COD. No theater mode? So no striving for cool clips to share with your friends and show off to new friends and community on TH-cam. Lobbies disband so now you can't even make friends anymore. No unique user customization like emblems. No striving for that cool looking calling card that you can only get by getting 1,000 throwing knife kills because it doesn't exist and also the only cool things cost real money. No casual and competitive playlist like league play. So now SBMM takes away the relaxing fun and you don't have the option to get serious and play ranked or league play. You're right about growing up too. Before almost everyone you knew was playing at the exact same time you were but now we have responsibilities and different schedules and life's. I've been gaming with the same people since PSP but now I never have a full party and when like 2 of us are online we play for like 1 hour. I used to strive for clips, high kd ect. Now most of the time I don't even play with my headset. If your friends aren't online you can't even talk to anyone on COD for more than 1 game.

Batman Arkham City is still one of the best games I’ve ever played. I remember being in elementary school looking up theories and trailers constantly. That game was everything I wanted and way more. The only other game that has me doing that at the moment is Hogwarts legacy cause a I’ve always wanted a Harry Potter rpg since I was like nine.

I haven't felt that kind excitement for a game since then, even tho I have enjoyed games since then, but it's not the same. Maybe it is because I'm adult now with other priorities.

I'm of the opinion that the biggest problem with modern games is that many games are being made without passion and more importantly, are being made with a "we'll fix it later" mindset. Go back to the PS2/OGXbox/GameCube era (aka the best era and I will fight people who disagree) where devs didn't have the safety net of being able to patch games post launch and give the update to customers. They had to make sure that the product worked from day one because if they didn't, customers would return the game to the store. Granted it wouldn't really affect the devs until the next product comes out because stores buy the games from the devs who then sell it to us.
Plus, when playing a game, even a bad one, players can tell if a game was made with passion. The PS2 Prince of Persia games or at least The Two Thrones are terrible games but I could still finish the game because there was some heart involved.
Is part of this from growing up? Probably. That said, I have more fun playing Mortal Kombat Armageddon than Mortal Kombat 11. I've been playing the Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga games and have been having a blast. I generally have more fun with games from this era so I don't think it's just me.

@@chloemarlowe3817 Trust me dude. I'm in the same boat as you are and it's not because of nostalgia. The reason modern gaming sucks these days, is because it's trying to be like Hollywood and is making more money than Hollywood. Back in the day (PS2 era and before.) The entertainment industry looked down upon video games and only saw it as something children would do. However, as gaming gotten bigger (Ps3 era to now) and Hollywood getting worst, we're in a situation where gaming has become just like Hollywood with lack of ideas and innovative gameplay.

Bungie showed E3 Demo, Advertising on TV about Halo 3, several programs on TV talked about Halo 3, and we had the Halo 3 Demo to play.
Once the day arrived, my friends and I went to Gamestop to attend the Halo 3 midnight event..An event filled with Halo.
Once we got the game, we went home to me and we played through the campaign on co-op split screen on legendary.
