video games aren't fun anymore.

  • Sorry this video is a bit more serious, next video is a return to form. I just felt like I needed to talk about this heading into the rest of 2022. Hopefully my story resonates with a few people, and hopefully i've convinced you to try out some other genres of games.
    Discord: / discord
    Twitter: / stryxo
    Twitch: / stryxo
I’ve been playing video games for, as long as I can remember. I can remember the first time I held a controller in my hands vividly. The sheer size of the Duke way too massive for me at the time, but all that was just background noise in my head compared to the fresh sights and sounds of what is now my second favorite entry in my favorite franchise ever. Gaming during this time period was, limitless. I had no concept of developer or hardware restrictions, the limits of pre-generated responses from NPC’s or content in the game to consume. Halo was an infinite universe to create in and experience, Spyro had no end to the amount of dragons I could rescue, hell I can remember using an action replay in Pokemon Platinum, using the walk through walls cheat, and accidentally finding shaymin at the end of this long path of flowers.
Come early 2021 it was time for me to upgrade, and after managing to walk into a best buy and just randomly come across a 3090 that I wasn’t even looking to buy at the time, I knew it was time to go all out. I managed to get a 5950x, the best motherboard I could buy at the time, and some sick RAM, there were NO compromises to this system, besides the fans I was running out of money. I built the computer, ran some benchmarks, and then didn’t play any games. At first I assumed I was just unmotivated, or maybe even burnt out, but over time I came to realize that I just wasn’t enjoying games anymore. I got scared, scared that I spent all of this money on a hobby I wasn’t interested in anymore, scared that the youtube channel I wanted to start was already dead in the water, scared that I’d be giving up a huge part of what formed my online identity.
I calmed myself down, and took a step back. It makes sense that I’d start feeling this way about gaming, doing anything pretty much every day for long enough would ultimately become mundane and boring, what can I do to have fun with playing games again. For awhile I was stumped, but during my time I decided to just take a break and work on my Ultrakill video, and while that was technically still gaming, it was mostly for work and I could take the time to figure out what I wanted to really do about my problem.
What I found though is that as I was taking a break from playing games for the most part, my desire to play them started rising again. But once I actually managed to get into a game and started playing, my desire to continue playing them would immediately fall, and I’d get off of it within 30 minutes.
What I came to realize is that I had no variety in what I was playing. I would get on my computer and boot up the same FPS games, or just open up Minecraft, which I’ve been playing for years as well. I decided to actually take the the time and figure out other genres of games I could play, and I’ve never been happier for it. I realized that what I was experiencing overall wasn’t me not finding games fun anymore, I just wasn’t finding FPS games as interesting.
Throughout 2021 I decided to take the effort to branch out into different video games, and what I learned was that I still enjoyed playing video games, I just needed a breath of fresh air. I played games like Forza Horizon, Monster Hunter, Ghostrunner, Spent some time on Spyro, replayed Sonic Generations, Sonic Unleashed, Cities Skylines, Dark Souls, Demon Souls, all of these games made me appreciate just, playing playing games in general, and reignited my love for the hobby.
This peaked when Halo Infinite was released. For 6 years I waited for a follow up to Halo 5, I watched any lore video I could come across, scoured reddit posts and twitter threads that discussed what would happen in this game and tried keeping up with the game as much as I possibly could. I’ve already talked about Halo a lot on my channel, so keep my bias in mind, but this game gave me hope for new releases. Did I have issues with Halo Infinite’s campaign, of course, but how GOOD the gameplay was kept me from noticing them as much as I could have.

list of varied games i like for those with this problem:
hollow knight - really good metroidvania
factorio - amazing factory building sandbox game, but maybe avoid this one if you want to do anything else for the next 48 hours
portal 2 - favorite game of all time, amazing puzzles
metro exodus - if your pc can run it, it's really good
pretty much any doom game - not the deepest of experiences, but very fun and difficult
a hat in time - great mario-64 like with a surprising amount of content
rimworld - colony building game, enough mods to make a second game
stardew valley - only farming game I've ever enjoyed
dishonored - great stealth/story fps, cool choices, second one if you like it enough
prey (2017) - similar to dishonored, by the same people, but more of a spiritual successor to:
bioshock - 1 and 2, recommend the originals rather than the remasters if you can get them to run on your computer. all time classic
terraria - pretty well-known 2d sandbox game, lots of bossfights and another game with tons of mods
enter the gungeon - funny top-down twinstick shooter roguelike. even if you don't know what some of those words mean, still great game
outer wilds - not to be confused with the outer worlds. cannot recommend this enough. story driven roguelike. DO NOT SPOIL YOURSELF.
valheim - terraria but 3d and viking themed. also really good.
octodad: dadliest catch - hilarious rage-game. there is no reason this has such a low metacritic score, it's a great game.
project zomboid - tough-as-nails zombie apocalypses survival game with permadeath.
vessel - difficult indie 2d puzzle game. very thematic, might require some looking-up.
control - cool 3rd person shooter with a bizarre story and cool brutalist architecture, if that's your thing. made by the people who made alan wake.
dead space - all time classic, really scary if it's your first time playing. slightly less scary once you get a certain weapon.
goat simulator - sadly somewhat short on content, but still entertaining to play around with for a while.
slime rancher - ok maybe i lied about stardew valley. much more chill than some other games on this list.
stanley parable - funny story-driven game about a guy in an office
singularity - relatively little-known linear fps that still holds up today. also a little bit scary.
spelunky - one of the few "rage games" i like. platformer roguelike
the swapper - difficult 2d puzzle game with a dark story and some pretty cool graphics.
deus ex: human revolution - good story driven semi-linear rpg fps game. not *too* groundbreaking, but still fun.
dark souls series - reaaally hard if you don't know what you're doing, but you figure things out eventually. interesting story, mechanics, and really good combat.
titanfall 2 - movement shooter to end all movement shooters. if you're having server problems, look into the northstar client- community hosted servers
ultrakill - doom with a retro 3d style. nuff said.
and that's it, I've gone through almost all the major games in my steam library. hope this helps

      What about:
Get To The Orange Door - an alternate version of Ultrakill
Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator - RPG type game but with the style of Papers Please as in, you buy/sell organs to the highest bidder while also evading the cops
Super Hot - you probably know about it, time moves when you move and you have to kill everyone
litteraly any Tetris game - 'cause, y'know, tetris
Twelve Minutes - an RPG groundhog day mystery game where you have to find out how to save your wife and yourself from a cop who's looking into a murder. (best desc i could think of)
Unpacking - a calm game where you unpack and explore life in a pixel art style while also seeing what happends to you as you go along.
Exo One - a calm space game where you try to get to the light in the distance while also figuring out what happend to you, it's great to pass the time and has a timer at the end to show you how long it took to beat the game. (i recomend)
Superliminal - a scycadelic type of game (that takes place in a dream) it's kinda like portal, but without the portals.
Backbone - an RPG, pixel art, 2-d, mystery. about a raccoon detective that wants to figure out a suspected cheating husband only to see that the raccoon was in way over his head. (the first chapter is great, but it lost me farther in.)
cluster truck - You climb on trucks to get to the end of levels you unlock gadgets the more you play and the more style points if you do tricks
Astroneer - an open world space explorer where you have to colonize and discover the secrets of the stars
Fire Watch - A RPG mystery game where you are a ranger stationed in a fire watch tower.
Gang Beasts - a fun game to play with friends.
Totally Acurate Battle Simulator - a goofy sim where you can battle your friends or take part against challenging enemies.
Sea Of Thieves - a pirate themed open world adventure with multiplayer but watch out, not everyone is friendly.
Any Hitman game - Hitman is a game where you are tasked to kill specific individuals however you like, It's all up to you, there's many ways to kill.
My Friend Pedro - a 2-d side scroller where you shoot everyone with style along with your banana friend who helps you with your adventure.

The most impactful gaming experiences and sincere memorable moments happened between 7 and 16 years old. As you get older you begin to understand how all the smoke and mirrors work, and you've essentially seen it all by that point. I still enjoy gaming and keeping up to date with new games, but the experiences never hit like the 10 year old version of yourself booting up a console without a care in the world.

True, as a teenager i was addicted to videogames especially when Minecraft came out. I had no life, plus I wanted videogames to fullfill the void I had within me to no avail, after going through many life crisis' I developed a hatred towards videogames and stopped playing all together then I found God(Jesus), and he filled that void and changed my life for the good, healed my anxiety and depression and loneliness and gave me purpose and identity and self worth, things I was really lacking in my life. Many years later I can now play videogames once in a while and enjoy them with friends and family without the need to depend on them emotionally. I disagree. Modern video games just don’t have the longevity that older games did.
I could play games on the Wii/Xbox 360 for hours on end, such as Madden, 2k, CoD, MC, etc
Nowadays, there is no physical way for me to have fun in any FPS game for longer than an hour-and during that period, I’m really not having too much fun, other than banter with friends. Sports games are absolutely atrocious now, as the graphics quality seems to have replaced the need for gameplay in the eyes of devs.
There is no longer a game where I enjoy playing it, in which I’m improving my skills and having it show in a concrete fashion; SBMM completely ruined this. It now feels like you are performing exactly the same in each game, even if you are improving; being matched with others who are improving at the exact same rate is absolutely idiotic. The entire point of getting better is that you will be able to outperform people who you previously struggled against, and you will consequently gain a sense of accomplishment from having done so. Modern games seem to completely negate this major element, which makes them feel more dull and harder to play for extended periods of time.

One piece of advice I can offer is that you don’t want to make side-missions for the sake of extending the game’s length. Modern day games have a lot of boring and time consuming side-missions and fetch quests which make a lot of modern AAA games feel like a slog, boring, and unrewarding.

    • @db22ellow55
      @db22ellow55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

It’s much easier to accept when you find a new hobby. I used to only play video games for hours but now I watch sports and I never really did that before. If you can find a hobby that’s different like maybe start listening to podcasts or be artistic. Just try new things. Now when I play video games like Minecraft, Cod, PD2, Mk, Ufc4, or even older games they just seem so fun but now I am in a position to be able to be apart of so many communities. The MMA community, gaming community, tv/movie communities like MCU tv communities or breaking bad or Star Wars or GOT, and just in general there are so many communities I spend my time with. I’m now getting into hockey, soccer, and rugby but when you find something new to like it’s so refreshing. When I figured out how NFL football actually work I was amazed and researched so much about the sport. I would watch old highlights, see how teams were throughout the years, and see the story lines about players.
I know I’m different from a lot of people but please try new things because you’d be surprised the variety of hobbies out there.
      -Playing a sport
      -Watching a sport
-Being a fan of a athlete
      -Read a book
-Watch a new TV show your friends recommended to you but never watched
-learn about history of different things
-play a video game that you’d never play before
I love doing all the things. I’ve interacted with so many people this way. Some games that I like playing that I’d never play before are fighting type of games, total war, or a game like city skylines. All these different games have different communities but their usually all very similar compared to others outside of games.
My point is new things make you appreciate the new and old while when you keep doing that old thing while your bored of it. You’ll start to dislike it. I’m also trying to say there a millions of different hobbies out there. Maybe conspiracy theories or politics is your thing but those are different things used as hobbies and have huge communities. I personally am not political or into conspiracy theories but a lot of people are.
I hope your able to find a new hobby while still playing video games. Like the guy commented below you said “you got to grow up and move on”. You could still move on and very well love video games though.

Interestingly enough, I also started playing piano quite a while ago.
But this also got kinda boring after ~7 years now. I am not really learning anything new, when I play occasionally, it's the same few things that I play for 3 years now.
Big problem is, that piano is a really useless hobby in itself if I'm being honest. It really doesn't give you any benefits and comes into action extremely rarely as a "useful skill".
I may be playing something randomly for a new person that I just met 1-2 times a year, but after 5 minutes they are always like "yep that is really cool" and the thing, that I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on has done its job.
I believe the problem lays in having no purpose. If I actually had a good reason to learn and play piano regularly, it would probably become much more interesting and enjoyable again.
And the same thing might be true for gaming. I don't want to play for the sake of playing something. I want it to be meaningful and enjoyable as an actual activity.

I played r6s with my friends constantly and then we all took a break, I started playing a lot of single player games and they quickly became some of my favourite games. Then we all got back into siege and had some of the most fun in all of our gaming experience. People need to learn to take breaks from things and not just play the same games over and over. Also I think the people saying that new games aren’t fun are usually the ones that just play multiplayer shooter games. The top 4 games on imdb are modern games with two of them coming out in 2018.

I've been depressed since I was a little kid, never really had a good time and only thing I had left was video games, so they kept me company and made me feel things, years pass and I grow up, things keep being the same and there's problems everywhere and every time in my house, but I always had video games as a shelter so I kept playing them and enjoying them. Years pass and my mom dies in 2019, at the time I couldn't play anything to distract myself because my pc motherboard died so I lend my parts to a friend so he could have a good time while I was stuck in my house while the pandemic was still going hard. I kept playing Apex Legends on my ps4 with some friends from time to time, I enjoyed the game, weird since my golden days of multiplayer where the days I used to play CoD, Halo or Gears with my fellow friends, even GTA IV online. So Apex Legends kind of revived those days a bit but shit was still going on in my head. A few years pass I meet a beautiful person on 2020, we get together and I'm the happiest I've ever been in 9 months... then sadly one day she abruptly falls ill and then dies. Ever since then I couldn't play games for quite some time again, months pass and I start playing Apex again with my friends to distract myself but then I realize I cannot do it anymore. I start losing and losing and I never got to be the same ever again ever since, I just deleted the game 2 days ago and I've been just thinking what the hell am I even doing and how the hell can I start enjoying things ever again. I play RDR 2 even though I already played it before and a bit of cyberpunk from time to time to pass the time. I remember I was so hyped for Elden Ring but then I completed it and just left it there, I'm not hyped anymore for anything. Old friends I used to play with got divided and I feel like I don't have anyone else sometimes, I feel so fucking alone and a video game cannot make me feel good anymore. I guess that's just life, I must go on and just abandon this hobby. It's 3 am and I just wrote all this shit.

I tried to buy many AAA games to avoid boredom but I ended up deleting them after only 2 hours of playing. I used to play a lot of games, but now what's left of my computer are just a few Total War games. Instead, now I prefer to listen to classical music by Mozart and Beethoven and I like to sit and look at Picasso's paintings which I used to consider stupid, I also like to read books. I love seeing the real world more than ever, everything is beautiful in my eyes. The game is getting boring or I am the one who is changing, who knows. For me it's the fact I don't have my friends to play with anymore, super nintendo to Xbox 360 I always had someone. Now it's just me and a bunch of no talkers like myself. The only game I felt that new fun feel with was squad on pc because everyone was screaming they didn't wanna die during an artillery strike.

here's some games i really enjoy if you would like to read this:
celeste: hard but fun platformer, amazing story and graphics
slime rancher: just a calm game about cute creatures
hollow knight and ori: cool metroid vanias
terraria: 2d game that's really fun to grind out, and also has mods like calamity which are really fun
      any valve game: just awesome
cuphead: extremely hard bosses, beautiful art style and music

I went towards indie games, been playing X4 Foundations for years now and it kept the fire burning.

For me it’s just a part of growing up and having more responsibilities, uni, work and etc. you get to have less and less time to enjoy yourself and play your favorite games and when I do I it’s not necessarily that they are not fun anymore, I just feel kind of guilty now, having subconscious thoughts that I should be spending my time doing something more useful and productive. This feeling just ruins the whole experience

No its just that games aren't unquie anymore so they get boring except for nintendo and indies they are the only big company who make games i want to actually play.
