  • Talking About Meal Planning * Showing You My Cookbooks & Planner * Rambling & Blah, Blah, Blah *
    Hi Friends!
This video is kind of a long, soft-spoken (and very unscripted!) ramble, talking about meal planning, especially as I prepare for guests next week! I do my best to be organized, but also stay flexible.
And of course, there is a lot of talking to “zone out” to if you just want to hear the blah, blah, blah of my voice. 😊
For some of my French cooking, I follow: / frenchcookingacademy

I'm terminally ill and on hospice. I have to move into a facility. I have a lot of stress. Dying isn't easy. A lot of people leave you because they can't handle it. You help me so much. You have no idea. You help so many people.

Dear friend - life is like Velcro. We pull away slowly - or quickly - detaching, ripping really, from this world as we head to what’s next. All of us. Some of us know it, others don’t.
I bid you so much peace and love. Any way I can help, even a little bit, is beyond an honor, my friend.

I'm also from Scotland. We would generally use "tea" in our family too. However, if we were going out for the evening meal, we'd say we're "going out for dinner", not "going out for tea". Confusingly, my Dad sometimes calls lunch "dinner", which I think he got from his parents. I've heard some other Scottish people using that too, but it's not very common. I don't really ever hear Scottish people using "supper" to describe the evening meal, though it does get used to describe certain kinds of food, e.g., a "fish supper", and I think that may be exclusively a Scottish thing.

In the UK, and if you’re from the north, food times can be named like so:
    Breakfast
    Dinner (lunch)
    Tea (dinner)
Supper (a possible extra meal later in the evening)
From the south, its normally in this order
    Breakfast
    Lunch
    Dinner
I’m from the Midlands, which is the central part of England and we tend to use the northern terms for food times. Around where I am, we tend to call tea also dinner, so you end up having two ‘dinner’ times + breakfast. 😇

your videos are so comfy😊 I helped my mom, back when I was in highschool, to make binders with recipes that she had saved from magazines, and she still has them! Some recipes are already a bit passé, but there are some jewels there. She's also very particular about always having a nicely put table when she has guests, even when those guests are only her children and grandchildren haha. I find it a bit too much at times, but I'm still greatful she thought us that you should care about the food and table when having people over. It shows respect and love!
Btw, here in Chile, we also "drink tea" ("un té", o "la once"), which usually implies having tea/coffee with sandwiches and a tart or something, at around 5pm. As all Latin Americans though, we have usually dinner at around 8/9pm
. So if you have tea, you either don't have dinner afterwards or have something light.

If I were you I personally won’t write in books. Maybe it’s just me but it’s a habit or whatever. I was taught not to write in books. And it suck with me. But if I wanted to take notes or jot stuff down I would get a planner or journal or notebook anything to write with and plan that way. I also wouldn’t write in the book because if you ever want to reread it, it would be hard to if it’s all marked up. That’s just me personally or if you let someone else barrow it. But then again it depends on the person’s handwriting. In general* I found that women tend to have better handwriting then men that’s a bonus for women. Sorry for going on a tangent but I hope your trip was a success Germany 🇩🇪 sounds like fun! ❤

I love and hate old cookbooks in equal measure..
Instructions like "use a tea cup of X" Did they have large cups in the olden days? Or were they normal size? Or are they mentioning "tea cups" because they were a special size?
Then you put the cake batter into a fast oven?
This leads to plenty of trial and error.. I can see why if you buy old cook books they tend to come with lots of pencil markings and annotations.

As a Canadian who's lived in both the US and the UK, I use lunch, dinner, and supper interchangeably. My baseline usage is lunch and supper, but sometimes I'll say dinner and then supper, or lunch and then dinner. Never dinner and dinner, of course - too confusing - but either one could potentially be dinner as long as I use lunch or supper for the other corresponding meal. :)

Ok go to recipes. My go to meat I love to cook are Boston Butts. It's a cut of pork shoulder which is huge but I used to have the meat guy slice them up where they would be pork chop steaks. And you can do virtually anything and everything to them. Bake em, grill em, fry em, stew em. I've recently had them and season them with cumin and turmeric. It gave it a very unique flavor. Another recipe I have is sweet potato pie. I've got the recipe from my grandmother but I put a twist to it. Instead of getting your regular sweet potatoes from Wal-Mart, I would go to an international store and find tropical yams. They're bigger than the average sweet potato here but you might be fooled and think they're just regular russet potatoes. The skin a bit more tougher to peel but they're more sweeter than our sweet potatoes and I don't know if you know the saying in the South, it's a "hit that sticks like grits" in my house, ok.

To address your question about the use ofthe term 'Tea' in the UK (I was born in London but now live in Wales), it has always been my understanding that people who live in the North of England often say 'Tea', whereas those in the South say 'Dinner', and 'Supper' is only used by posh people! 😄 I'd also be interested to know if others have a different experience...
