      ikr? While the plot wasn't THAT bad, I thyink the movie just did better with a few cast choices (personaly, I prefer the movie version of Poe and Josephine, although the series wrote Poe as much funnier) and the soundtrack is obviously incomparable.

      I honestly feel like, while it does have pretty good music and some decent pacing, some of the movie's performances felt bland, and it also very much veered away from the novels, in comparison to the Netflix series. Though, unlike the Netflix series, they at least got the right music for the Hurricane scene.

      Reasons why the film is better than the TV series:
      The child acting is much better.
      The special effects are much better.
      Jim Carrey is better than Neil Patrick Harris.
      There are far less plot holes in the film than the TV series.
      The focus is actually on the children rather than V.F.D taking half of the story.
      The film soundtrack is vastly superior to the short, nonmemorable tunes in the TV series.
      Also the film doesn't spoil what V.F.D is within the first 5 minutes like the TV series does.

    One difference I’m surprised wasn’t on here: The expansion and characterisation of Count Olaf’s theatre troupe. I loved the new personalities of the synchronised powder faced women, the dim witted bald man, and the nihilistic androgynous henchperson. The troupe got more screen time, and complemented eachother well I thought.

    That parents twist is, in my opinion, the greatest plot twist ever.
    Edit: I've been thinking about it and I definitely exaggerated when I called it the greatest plot twist ever. I was excited that Season 2 was nearly out and I was just praising it non-stop. Great show but there have been much better twists. And yeah it wasn't that unexpected of a twist but still it was smart and I'm sure it was surprising for the non-book readers.

      @Jprager 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Christine Oriol not to the extent of the show though, the movie was a closer portrayal of how Snicket was in the books, a shadow, a cameo never explicitly shown

    • @MrKlausbaudelaire
      @MrKlausbaudelaire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      actualy the books seemed to imply Snicket was narrating all the events as if they happened long ago, since he mentions it as "The Baudelaire case" and often mentions he searched for things that were lost in the books (like Josephine's house or the carnival's trailer), implying his presence is future to the events of the Baudelaires. The series kinda mix it together, with the same narration stating "it happened long ago", but having the actor showing up mid-scenes, although without actualy interacting to anyone.

    • @MrKlausbaudelaire
      @MrKlausbaudelaire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      plus he always calls the story "The Baudelaire case" and he is "investigating it". I also remember once or twice he describes how he couldn't figure out something entirely or how hard was to get evidence of something that happened, strongly implying he followed the baudelaire's trail an unknow amount of time after their events happened.

      I know this is late but I also believed that Snicker was from the future. Mainly because of the little things he says, like how he said in season 2 that he, himself went to visit Lucky Smells after it had been closed because of the fire that happened during the time the Baudelaires were there. But I got very confused when we saw that Snicker was in a past memory that we saw of the secret organization that had many past characters, like uncle Monty and aunt Josephine ( it was the part when everyone was trying ,discreetly, to get the note that said "Olaf knows" to Snicket ). If you have any thoughts or theories could you share, or if I missed something really important could you explain?

    I literally just finished reading the 13th book an hour ago and I can't believe I didn't catch all the hints dropped in season 1 of the show (which I watched right after I read book 4 and before I started book 5). When V.F.D. came up in book 5 I kept trying out phrases to match the acronym - oblivious to the fact that I'd already heard the words V.F.D. stands for in season 1! :O
    Right after I closed book 13, I went on Google to see how popular the book series really is and if there's companion books (there is!), and if ASOUE is available in my country too because I'd never heard of it prior to the Netflix show (I borrowed the books from my sister who had them shipped from Amazon UK). I found out that the books have been freaking DISCONTINUED in my country! You can only purchase the translated versions used for like a hundred bucks per book! The books have never been a "thing" here, even back when they were being released. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? They seem to have been majorly popular everywhere else in the world, why not in Germany??
    ******************
    MINOR SPOILER FOR BOOK 12
    Charles and Sir are in a romantic relationship in the books, too. Lemony Snicket not only very strongly hints at it, but he actually describes them holding hands and he explicity says that they shared a one-bed hotel room.

    One difference that I'm shocked you didn't mention is how Violet ties her hair differently. Although it may not be stated exactly in the books, on the covers we can see she ties her ribbon on like a headband. In the show adaptation, she ties her hair back into a ponytail. Also in the books, she constantly has her ribbon and never seems to loose or misplace it. In the show, she gets different replacements. This difference is minor yet I still think it's crucial.

    Actually, the VFD is everywhere in the books, the same volunteer fire department line is in the books too, in fact, the first fifteen minutes of the show are word for word with the books!

    You forgot one HUGE change: the entire plot of The Carnivorous Carnival was altered. In the Netflix series, Olivia Caliban was a caring protagonist and VFD member who was thrown into the lion pit by Count Olaf. In the books, she was a greedy villain and Olaf lackey who fell into the lion pit due to being outsmarted by the Baudelaires. Also, in the books, Olaf found out about the Baudelaires' disguises because Caliban told Olaf, while in the Netflix series, Olaf figured it out on his own.

    While the spyglasses didn't have a role in the Series of unfortunate events, they are referenced in the unauthorized autobiography, and in the All the Wrong Questions. I think the creators of the show are using all the books that are a part of the universe, not just the one series.

    I read this series in second-third grade, and I never met anyone else who read it. I’m glad that it’s getting recognition, and now I have FINALLY found other’s who also enjoy the series!

    I've recently finished all 3 seasons, and I never caught that Lemony literally mentioned the actual name for V.F.D. in the first episode, holy moly, that's cool.

    I remember I read the whole series in 4th grade. I was really hooked to the books and as soon as I finished one I would check out the next one. I really need to re-read all of them to see everything I missed 7 or 8 years ago 😂 I really love the show! Every intro is really good and catchy. I thought that I wouldn't like it because some people told me that but I was instantly hooked and basically binge watched the first season in one day. I have no regrets :)
