Even though he has been in many successful shows, I don't think any of them have used his natural personality effectively, i.e., he is cooler in person than any of his characters (except perhaps Doogie Howser).
he has a magnetism to him that allows him to play extremely exaggerated characters that most others can't. that's a rare ability, so in studios' minds it's not worth it for him to play a "straight" character that's closer to his real personality. there are tons of actors who can do that, but only a few who can be absurd without coming off as cheesy like NPH can

I also only recommend the first starship troopers movie... You were great in it even if your screen time was limited. When I heard they were doing a series for a series of unfortunate events the very first thing I thought and said was "why would they do that when no one will be able to pull off the part after Jim Carry did it in the movie". When I heard you were Olaf I thought and said to the same person "He might be the only person on this planet who could pull this off", and you totally did. You made the series amazing.
Lets not forget the time Neil voiced Spider-man in 2003. It only lasted one season but it was absolutely amazing (pun intended). Neil's performace as Peter and Spider-man was phenomenal.
