  • There are a 1000 ways to feed container plants. This is the basic way I set up my container for growing peppers. No need to be exact. Mature vegetable plants suck the life out of container soil... so give them a lot.

    I didn't know peppers needed that much phosphorus. I would've just thought the all purpose granular would cover their needs, thanks for the video.

    Very grateful to you for ALL you impart to us. This particular video came with perfect timing for me. Although I’m a lifetime gardener, at the age of 78, I’m planting more things in pots and this year I, also, tried the cloth bags that were my daughter’s cast-offs. She tried them only for flowers & didn’t like them. I did one pot with 2 peppers and two pots with red onions. All doing wonderfully. My whole gardening life I have been a failure at growing radishes (of all the dumb things to fail at!) & onions. My red onions are doing great in these pots. The ones in the ground = lousy 🤔. I shall revisit this video next year to do your “recipe” for soil prep for peppers. I’m so addicted to your channel. 👌

      Measuring by the handful and toss is a sanity and time saver for me. You could over do organic fertilizer in theory but it just breaks down nicely. Slow and steady.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Do you have an amazon store? Every time I try to buy anything from anywhere other than Amazon, the prices skyrocket by the time I checkout. I went to but a $24 neck pillow the other day from My Pillow from down in the states and it was $54 at checkout. Needless to say I had to leave it in the cart. Thanks for the video. I need to feed my sweet peppers some more. I thought I was liberal with the feeding, but apparently not. My sweet pepper plants are just sitting there. I've only gotten 2 Jimmy Nardelo and 3 Lemon Dream peppers. No bell peppers, Marconi or sweet pepperoncici at all! My hot peppers are doing well this year though. So that's one positive. Usually I have trouble with all peppers, hot or sweet.

    This is my first year experimenting with fabric pots for tomatoes and peppers. The peppers are doing great. When I planted them I added a handful of blood meal under the plant and used fish fertilizer in the start of the season. I am also picking them asap, even on the medium size, not letting them get too big and they are really producing. So far I am not a fan of tomatoes in the fabric pots.

    I have the Rubicon brand fish fertilizer and it's 2-3-0 rather than 5-1-1. I'm guessing it'll be good to continue using during the fruiting stage with its higher phosphorous content. I've heard good reports for tomato and pepper.

      So one I think that creates great risk for fungus and diseases. Like leaf spot. So I would pick your products and stay on a routine for disease prevention.. If it rains but the soil drains that's not so bad but lots of rain can make plant leaves yellow and even get mold on them. There really is much you can do. If the plants seem to suffer and they are not in raised beds, you can build 10-12 inch raised beds and plant that way. They tend to drain better. But it is a lot of work.

    Can we top dress with extra bone meal after the plant starts flowering? I threw in some slow release and a little bone meal when they were planted, but not as much as you show. I gave them fish emulsion for several weeks, and they are really green and taking off, now. Lots of blossoms! Just wondering if a little extra bone meal would help support them since they are starting to produce.
    The ones directly under the shade cover are noticeably thriving more than the ones that are on the sunnier side.

      I personally did after my first harvest. Just put some all purpose fertilizer on the top of my containers and then watered that in with langbenite (very high in potassium) and they just popped

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won't hurt. And if you have many months left of growing it will help. The like lots of light but the shade often keeps the soil cooler and plants do like that. Hot soil can shut plants down as they go into survival mode.

    also another question.
    our in ground peppers struggled in ground this year in a fam garden we have had for decades, but is at the bottom of a hill on 2 sides.
    We cleared land above it and put our trailer in so we have a ditch run off that has been running into that garden which I figured would be great as it dont really wash away top layers cause Ive made ditches through it. As the peppers were struggli g, I tested my soil again... well it turns out that my potassium levels wont even register! I got a new kit thinking it was a dud... same thing! what would be the best thing to amend this in your opinion? my garden is 100x 80 foot and this seems to be an issue all through it but worse where the peppers are. My tomatoes, cukes, and squash did amazing although the cuke Beatles have been a headache but peppers just wouldn't grow even with bloodmeal and bone meal. The others Barely flower. the only one that did good was some Auroras I had extra seedlings from when I ran out of containers.
    All my pepper wer from seed this year and did great till transplant. my container peppers are doing wonderful. Thank you for any input ✌❤

    Thank-you for all the information you provide. I just ordered your book. My question is about fish emulsion. I had ordered some but my dog went crazy from the smell, then I started doing some research. Does fish emulsion attract critters to your garden? Also, what would be a good alternative to fish emulsion. I live in a small town in west Texas and we have cats and other creatures roaming about. I think the fish emulsion would attract them to my garden even though it is fenced in.

      Congrats on getting started. You could really just cut your water soluble nitrogen by half. The nitrogen worry is more when using Miracle Grow that has like 24 nitrogen. You dont need all that. If yours is around a 5 like fish emulsion, you really dont need to lower it. Most likely you did a good job and everything is there. Just let them flower and fruit. If they look like they are struggling add some water soluble fertilizer.

    I am growing peppers in containers as well. After I cut back on the fish emulsion should I be adding more bone meal every month or so? I know they suck the life out of my fabric pots. I just don’t know how long that first placement of bonemeal will last.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bone meal is best in the beginning as it slowly breaks down over the weeks and months. You can top dress with some basic granular mid season or even once a month if you want. Just, like you did, cut back on the FE.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no. The hard thing is knowing how well your soil has been amended. But... I would apply it at planting. It will break down for mid season plant needs. If you are using MG and FE, you probably dont need the midseason bone meal.

    Hi, 👋. Every time I used 5-1-1 fish fertilizer, almost all my veggies (tomatoes, peppers, cantaloupe, squash) developed weird leaves. Smaller and thinner than normal leaves, looks dry and the pattern is ... just weird. I followed the instruction and actually used below recommended concentration (I used three table spoons of it in a 2.5 gallon water bottle). The only veggies not affected were kale and broccoli. Any idea what’s wrong?

    How can you grow different peppers sitting so close to each other?
    I made the mistake in planting Anaheims, Bells, Jalapeños & Banana Peppers in the same raise bed & got the most funky tasting peppers! None of the peppers tasted as you vwoukd expected. Cross pollination definitely was the problem.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      I wonder what the flavor is. Cross pollination only affects the seeds that first year not flavor. The next year, the cross, comes through in the fruit and flavor.

      There is no way cross pollination was the cause as that would only effect the seeds from the fruit if grown the following year. If you had funky tasting peppers it was 100% to do with the growing medium used or the seeds that were used to grow the plants came from bad plants.

    What's the advantage of organic granular over synthetic for the plant?

    • @jeanponton5669
      @jeanponton5669 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Granular feeds plants over several months when applied correctly. Synthetic soluble fertilizer, think crystals here, only last a couple of weeks. Long term versus short-term

    • @joanies6778
      @joanies6778 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Organic feeds the soil, too. You want healthy soil life which in turn feeds your plants.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The biggest benefit for organic is it is a slow release and it feed soil microbes. They break it down. Leave stuff behind and it more like a normal cycle. The synthetic types are in the form of NPK the plants need and they don't support soil life. NOW... sensible use doesnt kill off your soil life and it doesnt harm plants but relying on them over and over can cause issues with the soil. I use synthetics here and there as a boost when needed.

    This method does not work well for smaller pots and sunflowers/borage Cause a handful is too much! I suppose it's about moderation, and to be honest I'd give it a little bit of time before hitting it with the fish emulsion, as the dry fertilizers are plenty of feeding for at least a little while.
