  • In this video, we give this pair of Salvatore Ferragamo oxfords a makeover. A customer mailed this pair to our shop and wanted to have them resoled with JR leather soles and heels, Triumph toe plates installed and then cleaned off and polished with Saphir products. We set out to give these Ferragamo's a nice restoration, and we think they turned out well.

    This level of craftsmanship is becoming harder to find every day because people only want to buy cheap disposable goods. We need to patronize these people or we will lose these skilled craftsman. Most do all manner of leatherwork, so keep them in mind. As a cop until retirement I had a favorite ankle holster that had worn out over a number of years and I took it to a shop in Severna Park Maryland and he fixed it better than when it was new. The padding and straps were stronger and I still use it to this day as it is now the best I have ever owned.

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree that finding this level of craftsmanship is very difficult, and if I had someone with this level of skill anywhere near me I'd use them. However sometimes it's not about "wanting to buy", but "only being able to afford"... and the cheap stuff is a lot more difficult to repair and maintain too.

    • @golgothatheend
      @golgothatheend 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is because, price of everything else than a labour became ridiculously expensive, now the only thing people could ever afford is a cheep chinese mass produced products.
      We used to live in a world where labour less than a decade could have earned one, or even more houses, for instance.
      Now it became something you have to work for an entire life, or for some unlucky ones, more than one lives.

    • @wylieecoyote
      @wylieecoyote 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@golgothatheend Labour is expensive because the people spend a tremendous amount of time hand crafting the shoes. The people making them deserve a decent wage and compensated for their skill acquired over a lifetime.
      We have also increased the cost of hiring people because we have given too many tasks to the government and government does nothing well or cost effectively. Social programs are far too expensive and badly ran. Everyone gets benefits, but at a huge cost and marginal quality.

    • @golgothatheend
      @golgothatheend 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wylieecoyote I am not disagreeing with you in any sense. I am explaining why people buy disposable goods, rather than a craft from an artisan.
      People can't buy a cloth from an artisan costing more than a grand for instance, because normal people's income is nowhere close to purchase those without any damage in a bank account, even though it might only be a cost of fabrics + minimum wage.
      Yes, you are correct, and because of that, everything became ultra expensive. Maybe foreign factories, causing multiple jobs to vanish participated in this problem.
      What can we do though? Damage is already done, and we are divided more than ever.
      For those who can afford, who appreciates those old way, they will let those artisans live. If you are one of those, good for you, I also wish myself to be like you.
      For others, they can't.
      That was the point I was talking about.
      And in current state of economy, only thing I wish for those artisan is for them to strive, just like the swiss mechanical watch industry (hopefully, without negative parts from it).

    Most Italian style shoes are blaked! I have five sets of boots that are super stylish. So far I have had two converted to Goodyear welts. They are impossible to re-purhase and I am super particular when it comes to footwear. I used Brian the Boot maker. There was no one I could find in the UK where I live willing to convert them. It takes such along time to get them back that I've learned to do it myself! I've watched dozens of hours of T&H videos it's better than going to cobblers college. My parents were stationed in Italy in the mid 50's. My Dad always had had handmade shoes and my older siblings as well. We had dress shoes and work/play shoes. You changed shoes when you got home, polished dress shoes for school/church for next day. Always bought "good" shoes, didn't have a pair of athletic shoes till I was in HS. I would take my thin skin high heels and have a second sole applied to it for more comfort and longer wear. Good fitting shoes make for comfort walking and standing. Happy feet, happy life.

    One thing I have found to keep my nice shoes nice is to 1) keep them in shoe socks made of a soft fabric, and 2) use shoe trees. Not only do shoe trees keep your shoes form fitted but they also keep them from getting that weird 'toe upturned' look. The shoe socks keep them from getting beat up if you just toss them in your closed after wearing them. Also, keep your shoes conditioned and shined.

    Why do I see this video on my newsfeeds. But since the title is Ferragamo and I lived in Milan, Italy, for many years (and I don't own any Ferragamo shoes whatsoever), I just left Italy 2 years ago, I am watching and have subscribed. I never knew there's so many layers of leathers and soles and nails in just one shoe.

    Great work!! This shoe likely came from the Tramezza or Lavorazione Originale line of Ferragamo shoes. Would be good to know which model this was because it looks to have been well-built.

      C T Thanks! I don’t know much about the different lines of Ferragamo, but it very well could have been. Compared to other Ferragamo’s we’ve worked on, these were definitely a better quality. I appreciate the input.

    I really enjoy watching your restorations. You both have given me much insight on how shoes are built up and am even more looking foward to September of this year, as I will be attending a summer course for shoe-making at Accedmia Riaci in Florence at the "ripe age" of 58! I am hoping to start a new career as a Cobbler/Shoemaker and finally being able to get up mornings and go to work with a smile on my face!
    Anyway great videos guys and keep the old traditions going, because I truly believe all the old "stough" is making a slow, but steady comeback. Best wishes to you both from an Italian-american ex-army veteren living in Deutschland: God bless America!!

    What made you both want to become cobblers?? How did you learn the trade? Was it a family business? And...have you ever made a mistake so drastic that it was un fixable? Just questions that flow through my mind at night when I’m watching your amazingly satisfying work!

    It's nice to re-form the leather uppers as well, maybe a little moisture and a tree shoe with a little "ironing" action during the makeover would help to get rid of those wrinkles across the instep on the upper.
