Good to know that with a little adjustment you can also fire 38 special cartridges out of it. Awesome rifle, thank you for sharing.

The replica 1860-1866-1873 rifles and carbines all work with the cartridge length being critical to reliability. There are two ways to shoot factory .357mag and 38spl. ammo. .357 is 1.305 inches in length. You can drill and pin the elevator to the O.A. length of a .38spl cartridge and now it will chamber only .38spl. or you can buy another elevator in .38spl. but in both cases, the rifle will have to be partially disassembled to change between the cartridges. A short round (.38spl) will allow the next cartridge in the magazine tube to follow the first into the elevator thus causing a jamb. To clear that you would normally remove the magazine plug and spring and dump out the rounds. This also occurs with a bullet "setback" caused by too strong of a magazine spring or insufficient crimp on the bullet during recoil inertia. Magazine spring tension should only be strong enough to push the LAST round into the elevator.

You may also find that the casehardening on these replicas is actually a dipped coating and can be removed with chemicals, so be careful what you clean them with.

Do these have a hard time running 38s? I was thinking about getting the 16.25 inch barrel version but it only holds 10 rounds if its 38s and only 9 in 357Mag. If that is the case I may go for a 18inch barrel though that would be disappointing too.

The barrel states .357 mag only. I can only speak from my experience with my rifle. I load 38s in mine and they work just fine. However. I make sure the overall length is the same as a .357 cartridge. If I do that they feed just fine.

@@SlickSixguns so the normal length 38s don’t feed well? That’s to bad I was thinking of getting the 16inch carbine but if it only holds 9 357s that means I’ll be reloading nearly every stage as it’s typically 10 rifle, 10 pistol and 4+ shotgun.

@@357Dejavu three suggestions I can give.
1 First and foremost borrow someones rifle who is doing what you want to do and shoot a match, get their advice on the cartridge. Most inexpensive route
      2. Buy the rifle that will accommodate your # of rounds required for the. 357 to meet the 10 requirement.
      3. Buy your desired rifle Reload the.38 yourself to meet the OAL or find someone who has experience in reloading the .38s to those types of rifles more than likely a fellow cowboy is doing what you want.
