Thank you for posting. Awesome. Inspired to take a walk with the 50 and only shoot from the hip walking into the sun!
Thank you for watching 🙏
You've got some good ones there, the one with the three women in the shade and the mural was my favourite.
Thank you 🙏
Love seeing the natural workflow and inspiration behind the shots!
Thank you for watching!!
I'm *just* getting a 17-70mm lens and haven't taken it out yet. Around 4:30, you mention having to see things from further back. THAT was a key detail. Worth the whole video.
Thanks. Glad you found it useful 🙂
Another awesome photo walk.
Thank you 🙏
Some suggest 28+50 is a good combination but I am still struggling which to use when I only want to bring one camera with a lens on it, which makes me keep watching the street photography of the two focal lengths, and btw, I like your style very much!
Thank you. I tend to make the decision when I get to the location. So I will normally have both with me. I'm trying to get up to speed with the 50mm as I think it's probably the best all-round lens that I have.
Love the shot at 6:04
Thank you
Toujours aussi magnifique et remarquable ❤
Merci 🙏🙏
I like your videos very much, they have been (and are) very useful for me as a new photographer. My comfort zone is with the 35 mm. Focusing with the 50 is SO hard 😅.
Thank you so much and thanks for watching.
I bought my first new film slr in 1986 (it was an FM-2n). I also bought a Nikor 35mm f2. I learned so much about photography using this set up.
Thank you I enjoyed watching it in the past I used a 35mm manual prime lens a compatible one for my camera. I' have just not long bought a 16-24mm lens so I am going to use it for street photography hopefully getting the same result with a different look to my images zone focusing and shoot from the chest 👍🙏
Just as I purchased Voigtlander 50 Apo switching from 35mm. Timely video. Thank you so much!
Thank you for watching 🙏
The guvnor. Always great! Get in!
Cheers Gary 🙏🙏
A few good ones!
🙏🙏
Great video. Love the 50mm look. My most used lens. If crowds too dense, use reluctantly, the 35mm. Bravo.
Thanks Jason 🙏
I am just beginning to start my journey into street photography. I'm learning so much from your channel, thank you! Oh, and I might be in love with your dog.
You are welcome :)
It’s so nice to see you haven’t cropped his tail or ears👍
Not that we ever would (I personally think it’s cruel and unnecessary) but it’s illegal to dock and crop a dog in the UK.
I was going to mention the same thing!!
Wonderful images as always... I embarked on a project that started on the 1st of June to only shoot with the M10 & CV 50mm/1.5 Nokton II. If this goes as well as I think it will I may extend that to a year with 1 camera, 1 lens... I'll have to wait and see...
Thank you 🙏
Jeff always enjoy your videos, could you take us over your images selection and explain why you like them as street images?
I’m not sure what you are asking. Are you looking at going through an edit from a day’s shoot?
@@WalkLikeAlice Jeff I'm interested to know the images you highlight during the video what took your eye. What sets them apart from someone just taking random images in all directions. Cheers mate
Nice 📷👍
🙏🙏
A couple months ago I was visiting a bookstore with my son and DiL. It was an interesting palce and I decided to carry the X100V at my side and surreptitiously capture other customers in the place. I came away with a few nice captures.
I've been shooting the X100V so much that it will take an adjustment to take out the X-E4 with a 35mm lens on it and make it work. Ha!
Nice work.
Thank you
I like the 50mm lens( I love the 50-55-60 range of macro lenses more). Really good video. A couple shots could be considered for a future photo book.
That’s very kind of you to say so.
The 50 is actually a very difficult focal length to master. Great photographs.
Thank you
Sensational photography. Love the girl surrounded by the her brothers/family and the three girls and the mural. I noticed you mentioned that shooting into the sun simplified scenes. I always thought if you have the sun behind it would illuminate and bring out features in your subject/faces more?
Thank you. With b/w the sun becomes difficult to work with if it’s behind you. Everything gets illuminated and you end up with areas of high contrast with little to separate the tones within the scene. Generally speaking, higher contrast means less tonal range and less separation of elements in the frame. With colour you can get away with it as the colour helps to separate the elements, and the stronger light increases the saturation of the colours.
@@WalkLikeAlice thanks so much! That now makes more sense. Will try it tomorrow and see how i go. Thanks again
I just got myself the original M Monochrom. I was wondering if you shoot in manual or aperture priority mode? Also, how are you metering? I have been metering under to where I have the arrow and the dot just appears. Seems to give me the most consistent results.
As far as focal length, I am about 50/50 between the 35mm and 50mm on my M11, M9M, and M5. My focal length choice usually falls upon two factors -- where I am shooting and my mood.
Always love your vids!
Thank you. To answer your question; Manual mode. Auto iso. Metering is left up to the camera.
Awesome I love the look on the 50, what metering mode do you use ?
My camera only has one - centre weighted. 🙂
5:38 I prefer the first one because of how the veil covers her and forms an interesting shape
👍
Some really nice captures there Jeff. Zone focusing with the 50mm particularly well handled and judged. What happened to the film Leica? I thought you were moving back to film only. I have a missed a few videos, so I maybe you addressed this. I’ve just purchased a Yashica Electro 35 to get back into film a bit more.
I spoke about it in the community tab. It’s all on hold until various repairs/services are completed.
Awesome video. I own a lux 50mm and a m10r. How are you setting your 50 to catch focus. I see you’re shooting at f8. What’s your distance scale set to?
Thanks!! 5m or 10m on the distance scale. F8. Any less than that aperture and I’m focusing 😂
@@WalkLikeAlice thanks for sharing. Reading the manual I see that 5m-10m is the sweet spot for a 50mm but I never see anyone speak to it. I only come across the complaints about the limited of dof of the 50mm. My understanding is if you’re at one of the two distances that dof isn’t really an issue. Your images confirmed that for me. Thank you for sharing. Going for a walk with the 50 now!
Nicely done…low key style is appreciated. What 50mm lens do you prefer? My love of and addiction to the 24-70mm has been locked down, but I’m now suddenly shopping for a great 50mm.
I use a 50mm summicron. The 5th version of the lens. I bought it in 2001.
What shutterspeed you using while zone focusing?
Check out a few of the other videos. I go into this in depth.
Lovely shots. What f stop are most of these shot at?
Thanks. F8 or F11 depending on the light.
Thank you. I am learning to use my 50mm and this video is brilliant inspiration.
One question, if you were to use an autofocus you would be so quick in the shooting phase ?
No, and I guarantee that a lot of the AF images would be out of focus.
taking advantage of depth of field when shooting with a small aperture such as f11 or f22 allows you to get a relatively sharp image if your subject falls within the zone of focus. The wider your lens you use (35mm, 28mm), the more depth you get. Very good skill with the 50mm. nice
Great video! Did you use zone focusing?
Yes, pretty much everything I do is with zone focusing.
lol exactly. Drunks, kids and that sort of thing.
I think I covered all of the bases 😂
Nice - how did you set up focus?

@@WalkLikeAlice thanks. This video profoundly affected my approach to photography. I never tried street photography, especially B&W with only one prime glass. I was lucky today - drove down to the car boot sale in Carnforth that actually was off, so we decided with my girls to visit Kendal for a change. I had my D610 and an old 50mm 1.4, however, it was a little bit slow with autofocus shooting from the hip (the d610 doesn't have a flip screen), but I visited a local CEX seconds hand shop and they had a 50mm 1.4G. Damn best purchase since I don't remember when. I managed to pull some really nice shots in Kendal, and then on the way back (I'm from the Bolton area) we stopped in Morecambe - the gallery of characters there was really interesting and catching their moments in B&W prime 50mm - just amazing. Thanks for being an inspiration. Cheers
Thing I like about the 50 it’s usually pretty inexpensive
Generally speaking, yes. It was always the cheap kit lens when I first started out.
Just out of interest- the majority of images appear to have been taken while you were walking / passing a scene. Is that intentional as in your approach or driven by the circumstances? Brilliant vid- thx.
It's my approach for street photography. I don't like to stand still when shooting.
👍🇨🇴
A pleasure to watch, enjoyed hearing what you were thinking about various images. Will be street shooting tomorrow, always good to take on other perspectives. There's a section there where the beat of the music exactly matches Sarah's walking stride: happy accident or genius? :)
I couldn't possibly say!! I do spend a stupid amount of time trying to work the music into these videos though ;)
@@WalkLikeAlice You did well. I noticed....
