  • Having focus issues with your Z series Nikon? This is a not so short video on how I use the focus system on my Nikon Z5 and get fantastic results for both photos and video!
Here is my most recent wedding video, shot primarily with a Nikon Z5.

I use it with my old AF-S lenses and Leica manual lenses which are all pro level fast glass and the main attraction is the full frame sensor and ability to strap virtually every lens known to man on it and get great results. My autofocus body is my A7iii with Sony Zeiss glass and the Z5 is a Leica body for me at a fraction of the cost of an M body. Leica glass with Nikon colors is a unique and satisfying combination, I don't care about video on a entry level camera and leave that to my A7iii when needed. People are expecting $1000 dollar cameras to be as robust and feature rich as $5000 pro cameras on TH-cam which is ridiculous lol.

Thank you Hunter for an awesome in detail review of the Nikon Z5 focusing issues and solutions. I am looking to purchase the Z5 for weddings and portraits with some light video work. I think the z5 offers good value at a low cost and I’m hoping I can work around the focusing issues.

"It struggles pretty bad here", "well, it's not locking on", etc. You seem to be having the same problems I am having with auto focus on my new Z5. It struggles pretty bad to focus. Thinking about returning mine for something quicker to focus.

I use mine for weddings in all sorts of terrible light. It works great for me when I use it like I’ve showed in the video. I don’t think it’s the best camera ever obviously, but for the price point I think it performs great.

Hi I started photography with Z5 then I moved to D500 and D850 before migrating to Sony A7iv. The advantage of the Sony is the tracking. But since I'm taking wildlife, the truth is there is no single camera that did everything good:
For Z5 its low light af is poor due to tele lens are not fast.
For D500 it's the best af for perched birds but when a bird flies its keeper is only 20-40% depending on conditions.
For D850, it's about the same as D500 but is lower in keepers in both perched shots and flights.
Lastly the Sony is super in birds in flights and get it very fast. But the perch shots is terrible! Many times the camera doesn't find focus and just freeze in an unfocused position when its confused. So I can tell u eye af is not so good and I dun expect it too much at all.

I would love to get your feedback on these: th-cam.com/video/Dgq80FrrLXs/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/SuM6nvU0exs/w-d-xo.html where I test AF-C vs AF-F on the same lens. I have no trouble with AF-S, but in AF-C mode, the focusing seems to shift around quite a bit. This results in really poor performance when I hold the shutter down for continous shots while tracking a focus subject (using back button AF or shutter button.. not too relevant).

    • @natedagreat90

Iso 8000 perfectly usable as long as you get the exposure right and don't need to boost shadows much in post I can go to 25600 with a little tlc in post I can get the image clean and sharp but that's shooting raw jpegs is not recommended with this camera because the raw files are excellent

Hi I'm glad to see a complex review, I would like to buy a z5 and replace nikon d810, I would like to know if it's worth it !? At the moment I own a 3-year-old d810, I'm most interested in the iso part because I can't find any conclusive documentation anywhere regarding the high iso noise, which is better. Thanks for your time and I hope you can help me make a decision.

Like Nate said, 8000 is usable. Of course there is grain, but it’s manageable in RAW.

Af-c of z5 can't be compared to the focus of dslr from 10g ago, z5 is something terribly slow and bad! 3d tracking literally doesn't work or has anything to do with the fantastic performance of the same on dslr
