I kinda think it's important NOT to let the dog have his way. So, he's stressed. He'll get over it once the groom is finished and the more he doesnt get his way, the more he'll learn to just stand there until it's over. At least that's what my groomer says.
Forcing a dog through a groom that doesn't actually NEED a groom can do more harm than good. Baby steps would be more ideal. However, because they came from 6 hours away, I can't exactly do little by little, and have him come back several times a year.
I've done baby steps with a family members Labrador and now he calmly endures a shower and blow-dry. He used to absolutely panic when I first started. For a lab or golden to refuse food shows pretty extreme stress, which can have some long term health effects. That said, some dogs will train owners to just do what they want. Vanessa reads the situation very well, as per usual.
@@girlwiththedogs2 Thank you for explaining to her why you handled him the way you did. He was as patient as he could be about the whole grooming process. You are "The dog Whisperer."
I have learnt so much from watching you. Up until I lost my dog last year she loved the groomer but hated the bath. She eventually convinced her over time and with a lot of positive reinforcement to endure it without getting stressed. I recently got a new puppy and although she has a smooth coat, she will be going for a puppy groom as soon as she has her vaccinations complete. I personally found that knowing your pet will be looked after by the groomer and not be pushed too far is imperative. When my dog crossed the rainbow bridge the message from my groomer made me cry. She thanked me for trusting her with my dog and for allowing her to be a part of her life 🐕
Vanessa, Teddy was just trying to tell you how he liked his groom done. Lol. You are an amazing groomer. You are so patient a d care so much for your clients. Thank you for all you do. Groom on, Girl!
What an honor that people drive so far to see you. It really shows you how good you are at what you do and how hard you've worked to build a successful business. I hope you're proud of yourself everyday! This boy is so cute.
AbAbsolutely true, the long car ride most likely added to his already anxious state. Hopefully they can find a lovely groomer closer to home in the future. He's an anxious boy but still a good boy.
Yes, I truly think the owners need to work with him more at home. It's unfortunate but, a lot of people will adopt a dog and not realize just exactly how much socialization and training they need for not only just being potty trained but also for grooms and being around other people and animals. Goldens are said to be very friendly and easy to train dogs but, that doesn't mean the owners don't have to put in the effort to do that. Puppies, just like children, don't come perfectly well mannered and behaved right out of the box.
You always bring us. The most extraordinary breeds. I have never seen a whitish/cream coat Golden Retriever. I've only seen the common golden coat. Teddy is definitely a beautiful Golden Retriever. It's funny Teddy looking at the groomer. Like I haven't decided yet. To be a good boy.😂 In spite of Teddy's anxiety. He's such a cutie pie. Awesome job!❤️🐕👍👍👋👋
Teddy is an English style Golden - their coats can range from light cream to shaded honey to deeper gold (most people think they're always cream, but they're definitely not). They tend to be a little shorter than the typical American Golden counterparts (the types you see at Westminster), with blockier heads, shorter coats and rounder eyes. I've had two of them (both light gold colouring). They're just wonderful!
@@Kristin2885 In your experience are the English Cream goldens more anxious? Granted my experience with goldens was about 50 years ago, but I am very unaware of anxiety being a thing with them. All the goldens I knew were calm, cheerful, loving dogs. They were certainly active, but not anxious. I wonder if that’s more of a breeding thing, or what?
@@julieobrien4056 I think it's more to do with socialization (both early socialization with the breeder/breeding program) and then the owner. A lot of people assume "Goldens will just be Goldens" and maybe don't place as high an emphasis on socialization and formal training when they're young, assuming the breed will just fall in line naturally because they're so loving and smart. And some dogs, regardless of the breed, just need more work/experience in those areas. As far as differences, the general thought is that the English Goldens are actually more 'mellow' and calm than the American Goldens and some studies suggest they have less cancer in the English/European lines. I think there are good and bad breeding lines in both styles of Goldens. In my own experience, the English ones have been more mellow but could be a coincidence and a small sample size. It also depends if they're from show lines (mellow) or working lines (energy, athleticism). Really, they're all unique.
My understanding is that only puppy mills use the term English cream in the US as that color is against the AKC standard. It might be different in other countries, but for those in the US I'd be cautious if you're considering one.
Teddy looks so beautiful, in my opinion he does look perfect. You are a fabulous dog groomer. A few times Teddy gave you his paw, as if he was trying to tell you all about his feelings while say he likes you and wants to be friends. As best as he could, he was brave--I believe--because he trusts you to the highest degree he can...he knows you are kind. ❤
Thank you for teaching us how to treat our animals, Vanessa! Some dogs (and children) just don't like something. It's usually for a reason, in their minds, and having patience and giving them time to figure out a better way to handle things keeps everyone happy. Forcing anyone to do something we're comfortable with isn't helpful to someone who has a reticent attitude. We all have different feelings.
i think teddy just hates loud noise very very much. the nosel spraying and the dryers blowing. combined with the anxiety, i guess he really thinks the world crashing down on him lmao poor pup
The poor guy is either naturally timid, or has experienced a bad grooming visit in the past. He was much more comfortable with your free hand on him while using the hand dryer. Gorgeous dog❤
This dog is so similar to mine! I have a regular golden colored Golden Retriever who has a lot of anxiety. He also hates the dryer and will growl/raise his lips to show his teeth when he doesn’t like something. It’s so sad but you did an amazing job with him today!! I wish I had more groomers like you in my area. A lot of places refuse my dog since he is dog reactive and they have to work with multiple dogs at a time.
What a beautiful boy! I've had two English Style Goldens, myself. Luckily their coats are very easy to groom at home, especially compared to other breeds I've had. Hopefully the owners can continue to work with Teddy at home. Both of mine would let me do anything to them, and would practically fall asleep during blowdries and their 'pawdicures'.
Well was a very charming dog despite the stress The way he gave you his paw at the end was almost like a peace offering - and at least you did as much as you could
I could be wrong but I think at home what Teddy wants Teddy gets and vice versa. A dog that curls his lips at his owners, if I understood that right, is alpha of the household.
@@raspberry63088 I agree that dogs can have anxiety. One way of reducing the anxiety is to show them, as their so-called pack leader, that their anxiety is unnecessary and to demonstrate it by forging ahead. Anxiety that’s coddled, meaning rewarded in the dog’s mind, can backfire . It wasn’t Vanessa’s job or responsibility to push on with the groom but I can see how Teddy might be a candidate for receiving confident leadership.
@@lindap8101please stop with this alpha bullshit. There's no such thing. And stop assuming what's happening in this dog's home based on an 14 minute video of an isolated, stressful situation for a clearly anxious but good boy.

I used to live with a golden about 4.5 years ago- she was 2 when I met her and she was quite a nervous dog. She loved me- she bonded with me which made her aggressive energy owner very jealous and we had a falling out. I thought about Daisy a lot over the years and wondering how she is doing with an owner that is impatient, yells at her a lot which makes her freeze out of fear and just doesn’t understand her or want to change her ways.
Vanessa, you handled this situation as you always do. While showing the dog what behavior is not allowed, you also do it without stress on your part, and with encouragement and distractions. A stressed out groomer will cause a dog to be more stressed: your calm attitude and voice help calm the puppy, even during correction. Encouragement reinforces his good behavior, and distractions help redirect his focus. I’m a fan of your videos and applaud your contributions to all the fur babies, and their hoomans. (We don’t own them, any more than we own people). You always know when one of your clients has reached their breaking point, and is just too stressed to go further in their grooming, and you stop for their sake. Your empathy with our four legged friends, coupled with your experience, shows you when that point is and you concede for their benefit. Thank you, so very much, and I wish you many continued blessings in the coming year.❤️❤️❤️

I've had (and currently have) Goldens in my life for over 30 years now, and none of them have ever been this stressed at the groomer. In fact, the Golden we have now absolutely loves the groomer as she likes hanging out after the grooming and greeting all of the people and dogs that walk in! And with all of them, we can't say the word "BATH" around them as they will run upstairs and hop in the tub and want to play in the water! I wonder if the owners here not introduce Teddy to grooming as a young puppy, or if Teddy was just having a bad day. And they need to build this Teddy the same dog house the other social media star Teddy has - the $10,000 under the stairs dog house!

No wonder Teddy is anxious - he's just been in the car for 6 hours and now *this* . Great job given the circumstances though!
AbAbsolutely true, the long car ride most likely added to his already anxious state. Hopefully they can find a lovely groomer closer to home in the future. He's an anxious boy but still a good boy.
He did so good! By the end he was so much better, it warms my cold frozen heart to no end!
Aww, you were so kind and patient with him, he is such a cute ball of anxiety. Golden Retriever side eyes are iconic!
Aww he got better over time, especially with the handheld dryer nearing the end 🥲
Thanks! For the info. Just taken back. By the color of the Teddy's Coat. Just beautiful.❤️🐕
4:55 "Then I'm going to put him in the crate dryer to make him less stressed out."
🐕Shakes hands🐕💖
i think teddy just hates loud noise very very much. the nosel spraying and the dryers blowing. combined with the anxiety, i guess he really thinks the world crashing down on him lmao poor pup
Teddy was soooooooo adorable and scared ❤😢
Thank you for helping this scared boy! I'm sure his family is grateful!
I love him offering his paw. He so wants to be friends. ❤
Love your videos , they helped me learn how to groom my American Akita. Good content and cute puppers and kitties
The poor guy is either naturally timid, or has experienced a bad grooming visit in the past. He was much more comfortable with your free hand on him while using the hand dryer. Gorgeous dog❤
Teddy was so nervous, he is a beautiful boy. Trying to escape, gnawing at the leash. You can relax now Teddy it's over. Great groom.
Teddy thanked you in the end. He now knows he can trust you.
I love the side eye he gave in the happy hoody 😂
You were so patient with Teddy! He was hilarious in the beginning, when you caught some of his facial expressions 🤣.
“You actually very much stink.” 😅😂
Oh! Teddy is a beauty!❤❤❤
Well was a very charming dog despite the stress The way he gave you his paw at the end was almost like a peace offering - and at least you did as much as you could
That side eye is awesome!
Teddy is a cutie. I love him giving you his paw. You did great with him!
The look into the camera Teddy gave after you put the happy hoodie on him is priceless.
You were patient like an angel, as always. Teddy was cute, but I would say he needs more socializing and training.
I could be wrong but I think at home what Teddy wants Teddy gets and vice versa. A dog that curls his lips at his owners, if I understood that right, is alpha of the household.
@@lindap8101I don't think it's that simple.... Dogs can have anxiety just like humans, it may not have anything to do with training
@@raspberry63088
I agree that dogs can have anxiety.

Could you upvote yourself faster? lol
4:03 that side eye was hilarious.
Thanks for your amazing videos, it's really relaxing watching all the animals you're working with. Keep up the great work!
Thank you very much!
Such a handsome doggo
Best side eye ever 🤣
A wonderfully understanding groom. Deadly side eye from a doggo practiced in side eye.
So funny to see Teddy complain so much, then offer a paw. You are a sarcastic saint, Vanessa.
He’s like a 2 year old throwing a tantrum. You give in to it they know it works. You keep going and they get over it. Nice job!
My girl Jess is not keen on showers but she always comes to me no matter what. Goldies are such gentle calm dogs that I’m surprised Teddy has such anxiety. Bless his little heart. 💙
Aww, Teddy. Good boy. Love how patient you were with him.
Dogs are angels ❤
Thank you, so very much, and I wish you many continued blessings in the coming year.❤️❤️❤️
Teddy looks great with that beautiful lush coat. You have such a healthy relationship as his psychologist, friend & stylist. 😊 Always look forward to each & every episode released.
Have deep affection for Kuma & still cannot believe he has passed on. Favorites of GWTD include Kuma's puppies receiving their first grooming prior to going to their new homes. But I really love session with Kuma & his wife! Is Sumi, his salsa dancing wife, still coming to you for her "Day of Beauty"? Hope, possibly, we all will be able to observe "Spa Day" between the two of you ladies. Obvious from observing that particular episode that there was much mutual affection between the three of you. Love to revisit it frequently.
Happy New Year to you all! 😁❤️🎆🎇🎆🎇🎆🎇
❤ you did a wonderful job with him
You were most patient with this cute, but highly anxious 'fella'.
I think you did such a great job with this dog! I'm so impressed! How understanding and comforting you are. Your compassion made it easy for him to come back. No wonder many dogs that other groomers give up on let you groom them without problems!
Wondering also if the 6 hour drive to get there was somewhat upsetting for him too…
I love these cream colored retriever… they look so regal
He is a beautiful boy ❤️ very nervous but beautiful ❤️
How wonderful to see this sweet boy. You handled him so well
I can tell by the way this dog acts, he is very spoiled.
Aw, he even had a smile near the end. He’s a good boy!
Seeing Vanessa with the ear protection on, the camera on her head, the pink padding , the clip on the back of her head, she was looking like a a slightly psychotic coal miner. I love this channel.
He is such a handsome fella. I think he probably did the best he could. Sweet boy
Beautiful boy.
That was a very KIND groom. 💋🐕
Well said I also have a golden who is OK at the groomer this dog has definitely not been introduced to a groomer
Mine is ok with bath, he doesn‘t really love it, but he‘s ok. I think he doesn‘t like the sound of the shower. However, he is very fearful of any weird sound, e.g blowdrier.
A Golden that hates water? Whaaaaa? 😃
@@dustyking8851 mine loves water, just not shower.
@@agnesmeszaros-matwiejuk8783My sister’s (from another mother) GSD is EXACTLY the SAME WAY! EVERY TIME she sneezes, he runs away! It gets me EVERY SINGLE TIME!
She tells him that it’s “Ok, it’s JUST a sneeze!” He doesn’t get it!
I love how cool under pressure you always are! Showing him love at the end and ending on a good note is great.
Is there ever a time when Golden Retrievers DON'T shed? I say that from having lived with (and groomed) one, and he was constantly blowing coat.
Btw, I've never seen an "English Cream" Golden Retriever before. He's a stunning dog.
They only shed twice a year. The first 6 months, and the last 6 months 😂
Goldens and Labs constantly shed it seems like. We had a black Lab Emma. We had put in a whole house vacumn in the house we built in 95. I swear we vacuumed dog hair damn near every day. I would empty the canister weekly and there was a dog in it. How she could still have a full, thick coat was amazing to me. I wish I could say the same😂😂. Emma passed away in 06, a year after my wife did😢😢😢. They were the best of friends and I believe they are both in heaven walking and playing everyday.
Seems like there's a real marketing opportunity for the invention of a quiet doggie dryer.
This owner was just a bastion of great news He will show you his teeth,He will pull the happy hoodie off and he will hate the dryer other than that he will be a model client
At least they supplied accurate, helpful information!
Bless you for your patience and persistence with Teddy. Love watching you work.
I have never seen a Golden act like this.
Same they are normally calm i think this dog hasn't been introduced to a groomer early
I'm a golden retriever fanatic so when I see when this nervous my heart melts I think with some work and some patience and visiting you a few more times maybe they'll get it so he will be able to tolerate his grooming sessions my Golden's were started from babies and they always love their spa days
That boy is, obviously, SPOILED, at home, I bet😅
He is giving you his paw in agreement.😊
Q: So how many issues should we expect with your dog?
Teddy’s parents: Yes.
He’s the first goldie who has been on this channel who isn’t like 🥰🥰🥰
I don’t mean to shame them but… The owners really ought to have worked on his socialization. They’re usually such easy dogs and Teddy does seem smart and quite sweet.
I am thinking the same thing. Either this is poor breeding or poor parenting.
It’s more likely that he might have had a bad experience at some other groomer and now associates it with a very bad experience he had
Teddy is pretty chilled
I'm always amazed how much a water dog like a golden will complain about a bath, but search out every mud puddle with joy.
