      The Blackstone card only packs run out fast and No Respite seemed to disappear quickly, but the rest were available for a while. Nothing like the 10 minutes and gone for Cursed City and Nightwars.

      GW very rarely do reprints of anything like this, so I wouldn't hold my breath, unfortunately. However, I live in hope that they will eventually do right by Cursed City. And yes, I spent a lot of time back in the day helping people find expansions for Blackstone and running videos on what was still available and what I thought people should move on while they could. Nothing disappeared with the speed that Nightwars did.

    It's ever increasing, the pleasure of missing out on this the first time round.
    I got super excited when they first announced this game, but instead of it becoming a continuing series on my channel. It became the start of my slow distrust and deviation away from GW releases.
    In fact lately I've spent more on SW Legion and Digimon tcg than Warhammer and soon I'll be adding the new TT:120 range from Hornby to the things I'll be buying over GW products.
    IF they up their game with the next expansion, maybe tying it in with the Flesheater Courts update, maybe it might be enough for me to buy in, but the way they're going currently? My future with them isn't looking good.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I soldier on with Warhammer Quest, because I do love the games so much. But really, it would take something pretty impressive from GW to make me go in on another game. The only exceptions to that would be the bookshelf games, which is irrelevant when they don't make it to the UK anyway!

      The bad release last year started my long lost love in dungeon crawlers...now I am 3000€ deep into kickstarters and other boarddgames from my local FGS....ah, there are none of GW games in the middle of them. Not a chance. I could buy three or four new games I want for the price of those miniatures (and while I wouldn't buy from GW direct I do find it funny those miniatures are sold out on the GW store). I am considering buying the fell bats because they can be used in any Cursed City game, but the vampires normally only appear within their own mission types so you will only end up using them five or six times each during the new campaign. You can also happily play everything except decapitation missions without even adding the new vampires, the missions will just be a bit easier because the bosses won't randomly spawn. For Radukar the Beast you can just keep on using Radukar, you just have to remember he takes up four spaces on the board now.

    I think with a set like this,they should have at least included some cardboard pieces for those who can't afford the minis. Any box,regardless of minis or not,should have all you need to play the game. Even if it's cheap. But then,you can always sub stuff out. It's Halloween season right now. Since I already owned all but one of the miniatures required to play the expansion, I thought this would be an excellent purchase for me. However, with the actual product now in hand, it somehow doesn't seem quite worth even the discounted price I was able to get it for. I mean, when you think about it, the entire contents of the box, other than the rule book, fits in a rather small, sandwich-sized baggie. I actually checked the list of contents just to make sure I wasn't missing anything! I realize production and transportation costs have all gone up, but still it seems that they might have at least included cardboard stand-ins for the necessary miniatures for those people who don't have the plastic versions and might find the cost of purchasing them extremely prohibited. True, you can always substitute another miniature, but should you really be expected to? I love the story behind this game, and it has such great potential, but I do wish that Cursed City was maybe just a little bit less..."Cursed."

      Yeah. I know why GW wouldn't include tokens on the punchboard for the enemies, but to me it would make sense. It's worth noting that all the stories I heard of people having preorders cancelled with GW were people who ordered through Warhammer stores rather than online, so it may be the case that the stores get priority, but if so, that really highlights how underproduced this expansion was. Of course, it might just be your local manager trying to improve sales figures in that branch!

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you could safely cut down the campaign by playing a journey type until you get one success (rather than three) and then cutting straight to the Haven defence. That way you are only replaying missions if you fail them. It will still take you a minimum of 10 plays to get through the campaign, but every one of those 10 plays would be something different, and I think 10 games feels like a pretty decent length for a campaign anyway. Of course, then you would have even less incentive to buy those expensive miniatures... if you can even find them. They are all sold out at GW UK.

      I know you are no great fan of HeroQuest, but I always felt the expansions for that game got a decent balance when it came to campaign length. 10 new adventures seems like plenty before you want to start seeing something new again. I don't really see the point in grinding to three victory points in each mission type in Nightwars. You might as well just unlock a new elite trait each time you kill a vampire lord. That will keep everything chugging along nicely.

      People on BGG keep moving their goal posts arguing about Heroscape. First it's that there's no exposure, then it's that Hasbro doesn't know how to run Haslab for a boardgame, then it's too high a price for non-fans to buy into (which is true), and now it's that Hasbro doesn't flog loads of games even though they do. Even the designer of Heroscape had a new Risk Legacy sequel come out 2 months back. The have a new Betrayal and a new werewolf expansion out now too.

      Hasbro know exactly what they are doing with board games. They also know exactly how much money they need something to generate to move the needle enough for them to even bother making it. HeroScape is actually getting lots of exposure from places that might not cover the movements of smaller companies. I notice on the Discord they are pinning their hopes on Tom Vasel doing some coverage as he is a fan, and with his weight behind it they might start drawing some backers.
      As an aside, I have run three videos on HeroScape totaling almost 20 minutes of footage. If you add up all the views across those three videos it still comes to less views than I got for a four-minute videos about Mage of the Mirror for HeroQuest.
      Talking of Betrayal, I really need to pick one up. I was tempted by Baldur's Gate, but I think my love of horror is greater than my love of D&D, so I think I will end up with the third edition.

    I kind of get the feeling that GW was not confident in this release. The really low stock indicates this, as it sold out so quickly even without miniatures in it, let alone ones unique to the set. It's really just an expansion. If you don't play Cursed City this is worthless to you. Them re-using existing models in this way too comes off as something they threw together for a release, rather than being planned this way. It's really a shame, I had so much hope for a return to Warhammer Quest in a fantasy setting after all the love Blackstone Fortress got. The ascetic is so good too, and it had so much hype at launch.

    I can't wait to play this! The new number lynchgates will just go straight into the rest of my core campaign. Think nightwars needs a few homebrew rules. I'll probably change the starving vermin to have a defence roll. Either for each point of damage or just 1 for the 2 points of damage. I think I'm gonna change the cloying mist from change crit to success, and success to failures, to minus 2 on all heroes activation dice, think changes should still make it a challenge without it being too brutal. I also might have radukar the beast treat hostiles as heroes, like Ambull in BSF, he is a beast that wouldn't care who's in the way. Very hard pass for me. The box is (was?) a terrible deal anyway and the campaign structure seems to be basically the same as the core box: repeat the same missions over and over until you kill all the baddies. Boring as hell, sadly.
    The expansion seems like an afterthought, made from content that didn't fit in the core box, with rules made with the only goal to artifically prolong the gameplay (you'll have to repeat many Purge missions and some Sabotage missions will last a looot due to Attacks missing more) on top of that the haven phase basically looks like a Copy/Paste from Blackstone...
    Cursed City was my biggest disappointment the year It came out, this expansion just confirmed the feeling...

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's content that was left out of the core box as such, because it seems to be directly addressing some of the complaints about the core box. It is introducing the random spawn points idea, it has ramped up the difficulty, and it has done away with the concept of balancing different statuses within the city, which was something that felt like it prolonged a campaign artificially.
      When they announced this expansion I called it a content patch, and having dived into the box in detail I still feel that way. It feels like something that was put together to give the impression of support for the game, either to bolster sales of the reprint, or to keep things ticking over into a full expansion comes out next year. Some of it feels like it was going to be content for White Dwarf, and some of it feels like it exists just to hinge it all together.

      While I could stretch my hobby budget to buy the miniatures, I don't intend to. I am thinking of picking up the fell bats, just because they are something you can use all the time. However, the vampire lords only appear in a limited fashion. They are too powerful to drop into the core game, and within the Nightwars campaign they turn up mainly in their own designated journeys. I don't really fancy spending over £20 each on miniatures that I may only use five or six times. I will probably just use Radukar as Radukar the Beast, and then find suitable miniatures to represent the vampire lords. A lot of people are considering the Crimson Court.

    I think they missed an opportunity to add more and different enemies (with the possibility to also encounter them or most of them already in the main game).
    I also prefer the dungeon crawler feel of drawing cards and placing tiles much more, than the pre build maps. It would have been cool to have this kind of feature more included in the expansion and maybe make some real “hunt” missions, where you try to get to a certain named minion and slay it.
    I already bought it anyway (but haven’t received my copy yet…) but I think I will use many house rules / additions to the game, to tweak it more to my liking. I especially miss that in the 1995 WHQ every mission had some kind of story / objective, while here you just go on many grind missions to balance fear/influence/doom. I think it wouldn’t had been difficult, to add some small story / flavour text to every mission and make it feel less grindy.
    I still adore the style, setting and gameplay but I feel like this game could have been so much more…

      Cursed City definitely isn't living up to its potential. I would definitely love more varied enemies, but I suspect they don't want to do that because it will weaken all the enemies that key off of supporting types. For example, Halgrim is going to be far less threatening when there is significantly less Ulfenwatch spawning. But then again, it would be very easy to create tailored encounter decks to add more theme to locations around the city and ensure the synergies between the enemy types, so it's not difficult to do, really.
      Shadows Over Hammerhal did an excellent job being narrative driven, and some of the best Blackstone Fortress missions were the ones that had a strong plot, like the ambull mission from the annual. I would love to see more of that type of stuff in modern Quest.

      @@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Ah thx for pointing out Hammerhal. I might give that a try then. I love Warhammer Quest but really need a little story when I send my boys/girls out on a mission risking their lives and not just, try to lower fear/influence 3x. I still adore the setting though.
